2023 young talent time

Quick, real quick, good KPP’s size and gets the footy… lacks polish and quite raw, could definitely develop in a AFL club environment - but then again I thought that about Roy Benning 😬 and maybe that’s the key, does Zakostelsky have the drive and sponge like attributes to make it at the next level?
At one of our last picks I would pull the trigger by drafting him and giving him a minimum 2 year development window.

Our first two picks need to be needs based and best available
  • small forward (best available WA boy)
  • best available WA boy
  • best available WA boy
  • best available WA boy
  • best available WA boy
Why do you think they must be WA players?
I mean it's awesome when our picks line up for a good WA player, but we should be taking the best player for us, of which geographical origin is surely only a small part.

I am not arguing for us to get him, but I think given he wasn't even playing football (He is a "I come from Basketball" background) two years ago Zakotelsky has had a rapid rise already.

Listening to him speak, he is clearly driven and seems like he has the right attitude to make it. Much of his progress over the two years so far has started as being an extra "train on" to main squads and then forcing himself in on the back of hard work.

I'm not sure it's the year to go all in with an emphasis on WA players.

The exception for me would probably be Riley Hardeman. I suspect we'll have him very high on our board and would be the one we look to trade up into the 15-20 range for. I'd also consider the same for Lance Collard, if he was on the board around the 25 mark.

Otherwise, I think a few of the better WA players aren't really needs for us. I wouldn't consider Curtin unless he fell a long way, not worth the cost and he's not a positional need - also might be a decent chance of coming home in a few years anyway. Don't think I'd make a move for Tholstrup either. And even though he'd be good value at our first, Clay Hall doesn't really offer anything that Johnson and Erasmus don't already.

Personally, I don't see Mitch Edwards as a pressing need - but accept a match after 40 would be too good a value to ignore. I wouldn't go for Zane Zakostelsky or one of the other young rucks like Evan Smith.

Of those that are left, Koen Sanchez might be available at our first pick - would be a decent addition, smart player and just a good classic footballer. More clever rather than dangerous in the forward half, which could be a positive or negative depending on what you want. Either one of Reece Torrent and Joe Fonti could be considered at a later pick as some rebounding half back depth. I wouldn't be disappointed there. The wildcard is probably Aiden O'Driscoll. I think the club will seriously look at him for a wing position despite his size, and he would be a more attacking option than Liam Henry provided. He's the one I seem to change my mind on the most.

And then there's some others who'd be more likely as rookies like Xavier Walsh, Oscar Hine-Baston, Jack Cocking and Ashton Ferreria.

I've ended up listing a fair few players, the only issue I have with targeting locals is at most of our picks there are likely to be better players/better fits who we'd be overlooking for the WA factor. And I think that's especially true both in terms of the mature aged guys and for forward talent - which we've said is a focus this draft.

Best case for a WA based draft would probably be Koen Sanchez, Aiden O'Driscoll and Reece Torrent.

Hmm not sure it gets us Collard or Gothard. WC sitting there with 23

But I wouldn’t be averse to 24 and 26 for either of the firsts we traded in
Yuck

They'll be like 30 by draft night

Gc are trading those for points anyway

We would be giving up all our picks and maybe a late future for one

Thanks.

Nah, I chose Freo. I prefer to pick sliders or find late gems rather than the pressure of nailing picks at the top of the order.

Common theme, thanks.

Very helpful, I reckon.
do you plan on posting the results of your draft on here for us?
I hope you do, & include the whole draft please. Of course that is no good by the mods, maybe a link, please?

100% happy to post my results.

And will also post the whole draft if OK by the mods.

Note: I am a total amateur. Relying mostly on YouTube vids and the scouting notes of others, with just a little raw champs footage in between. My picks hold very little weight.

How are we trading up otherwise?

The only other possibility is one of the firsts for 18 from North

If it’s with Gold Coast, I imagine it’ll just be for points. Something like #24 (785 points) for #34 (542 points) and #46 (331 points).

I’m not sure about trading a future first, especially for picks outside the top 25. Seems like it would defeat the purpose of bringing them in. I’d rather keep them and be aggressive next offseason.

Not sure a small forward is on top of the Eagles list…
Liam Ryan - Noah Long - Tyler Brockman, enough small/medium forwards???…
I reckon they would be going for Hardeman Tholstrup and another ruck in Edwards with two picks in the twenties

Not gonna happen, or else we woulda just taken collingwoods pick 19 instead of future 1st.

What apuchar said.

The reason this might not be true is if we only want specific players at that point you can trade in using the 1st. If they aren't there you keep the pick in the 2024 draft.
Echoing earlier comments if that was what we wanted we could have just taken 19 off Collingwood and traded it out live if the players we wanted sliding didn't slide. That way we're getting the premium rather than paying one via coughing up an F1. It seems much more likely that the area of the draft we are targeting to trade up to is either lower (picks as they stand now mid to late 20's) or much higher via offering two F1s. Trading back into a part of the draft we traded out of (and opted out of as well via rejecting pick 19) of seems ludicrous to me.

Seems just like the sort of thing we'd do hey?

The obvious counter is that we are no guarantee to be able to trade out 19 (which would be ~23) for an F1. This way we either get the exact player we want or we're guaranteed a F1.

I’ve heard that the slime have spoken with Arie Schoenmaker. What’s his forecast draft position?
