Yeah it was more good bowling with the new ball and bad batting that led to the Poms top order collapse rather than the pitch.

Lyth fished at a ball well outside off that he should have left alone, terrible shot from an opening batsman.

Ballance was just beaten by a fast full ball and he's technically s**t, better batsmen would've kept that out.

Bell was beaten by a jaffa from Hazlewood that swung late, would've got most batsmen out.

Root like Lyth just fished early at a ball outside off that he should've left alone.

None of the dismissals were really due to the pitch and only Bell got out to great bowling, the others should be kicking themselves for playing poorly.

Once the new ball shine and swing wore off Cook and Stokes looked pretty comfortable, the bowlers will find it a lot tougher with the old ball like the English bowlers did.

Sort of agree; but Ballance was beaten by a damned good ball - that moved, at serious pace, and would've knocked most over.

The beauty of Mitch is when he's bowling fast, swinging it, angling in at the body, he gets wickets like Root - the batsmen s**t themselves and fend/play at balls that they shouldn't.

Yeah Johnson still bowled well with good pace and a bit of swing which caused the batsmen to make errors.

Ballance is a horrible batsman though, he looked like getting out almost every ball so it's just a matter of bowling full and straight on the stumps until he misses one and gets bowled or lbw.

Hard to believe that KP isn't batting at no.3 for England, they would look a hell of a lot better with him there.

Personality clash, Cooke and KP . K P would be better than Bell , bit like katich and clarke

Saying it was bad batting is really not giving enough credit to the bowlers.

All of them except Lyth's were great deliveries.

Root's was set up perfectly by johnson. Short and outside off, each delivery inching closer to his body until Root had to play at it.

Smith has a looooooooooong way to go to even get close to Punter, how quickly they forget. Ricky's 156 in the 05 ashes is 10x the knock Smith just did IMO. Not trying to knock Smith, though.

The goldfish mentality is strong.

Smith isn't a patch on Ponting.

Yet.
Really need some figures, with a touch of context. Ponting was excellent from the very beginning, Smith was pretty diabolical for the first year or two when they didn't know whether he was a spinner, all rounder or bastman. Take those figures out of the equation and his record is phenomenal.

Don't know if Ponting was excellent straight away. He was dropped a couple of times from memory.

I remember his 96 on debut. Everyone knew he was going to be something special. He may have been dropped but it was probably for the learning experience. I don't think there was ever any doubt that he was going to be a quality Test cricketer.

Mind you, if we're talking Bradman-esque figures, Hayden was probably closer than Ponting during that spell of a couple of years.

Ponting was a great batsman, but a little overrated IMO. I think he's a rung below Tendulkar, Lara and Kallis. His career went through three distinct stages:

Stage 1 (1995 - 2001): Talented, promising but inconsistent #6 batsman.
Stage 2 (2002 - 2007): Moved to #3, Bradman-like form.
Stage 3 (2007 - 2012): A steady decline in form.

So Ponting was a good batsman for around 10 years and a freakish one for around 5 years. Ponting in his prime (stage 2) was better than anything Smith has produced so far, but Smith is in a great position to surpass Punter by the time his career is done.

Maybe my memory is failing me, but did Ponting ever have a year like Steve Smith's?

His record in Tests during the Australian summer was 162*, 52*, 133, 28, 192, 14, 117, 71 for a total of 769 runs @ 128.16. Back that up with ODI form of 10, 73*, 104, 67, 37, 47, 102* for a total of 440 runs @ 88.00. Then he has 199 and a half century not out against the Windies from three innings followed by this double ton at Lord's. It's just phenomenal.

2003. He averaged 100 in tests that year, I think. He also made a 140* in the World Cup final. But Smith's recent form even has that covered at the moment.
