Its a least 8 weeks after the operation till you know wether its a success, ive had that operation 4 times, and between 6 and 8 weeks it has failed. It can take up to 12 months to get the feeling back in your foot if you have numbness. I really hope it goes well, but way to early to say its a success. Hate anyone to go through what i go through.

Re: 3. Scott Gumbleton

gumbleton was at training this morning - he was walking slow laps with skipworth and daniher. they were walking quite slow so the significance is not much but his walking gait appeared ok.

Gumby was at training this morning (22 May), progress is a bit depressing but managed a few ginger 10 metre canters before strolling the lonely boundary of Windy Hill, ball in hand and squatting to pick up a wayward bounce of the Sherrin...

Re: 3. Scott Gumbleton

OK, I'm sick of waiting.

Let's get some money together.

I've heard of a guy in Germany who sells stem cells by the barrel load. One of us can just nip over there, hide it in our unmentionables on the way back through customs (someone who has seen "Border Security" could probably provide more detail here), and then someone with contacts at the club can sneak the ooze into his Gatorade or something.

Bang, zoom, straight to the centre half forward line, jumping all over Joel Bowden's ugly head this weekend.

OK, so to get the ball rolling, I've got $7.50.

Re: how far is scott gumbleton returning to play football

last time i was at training he was just walking - i've heard he is now swimming. so in terms of weeks if he starts jogging laps next week then a gradual buildup into full training could take 4-5 weeks, then he would be looking at 3 matches in the vfl before a return to the afl. so i would say 8 weeks so probably R19/20 at the earliest i'd say.

I hope they don't risk him this year unless we are looking like real finals contenders.

Correct weight.

I think this will be the path that the club will take with him. There is no point risking him at a late stage in the year when we can not rush him and having fit and firing for pre-season.

Re: how far is scott gumbleton returning to play football

It's his back, guys. I can't see him back this year. The best thing is for him to recuperate, then strengthen his back muscles with a specialised program. Basically, he has to build up the muscles next to his spine to help support it. I would say swimming, then pilates, then resistance training. Dinghy sailing would help; (like leaning out).

There is no short cut to returning to sport from a back injury.

What do people think? Do you reckon we will give Gumby as many years as he needs to get his body right? I really hope we do.

At this stage, yes.

If he gets to 26-27 and still has chronic injuries (God forbid), we may look at it, but to be honest, the chance that he'll get better is a lot greater than pulling something from pick 90something in the GC drafts.

Yeah man that's good to hear, next hear hopefully he will be right, if he goes to GC I reckon there will be some mad Bomber fans, we have been very patient and I hope he recognizes it.

You'd have to be a massive prick to walk out after all the faith the club has shown you.

Re: how far is scott gumbleton returning to play football

I hope he can get back and play some games of footy asap cause i have a fear our forward line will have some probs if this bloke is our new Dean Wallis

well we might as well nurture him through the year at VFL level then focus on a huge preseason.

he's a touch n go player, bit like our finals chances.

Re: How Far Away is Scott Gumbleton from Returning to Play Football?

If I were the Bombers, I wouldn't worry about him playing any football this year, at either VFL or AFL level, finals or no finals. They should just get him 150% injury free, and get him through a full pre-season, and then right to go for 2010. There's no reason to rush him, and a persistent back problem could not only affect his football career, but his life as well (especially being tall like he is), so it's in everyone's best interests I'd think to just be on the cautious side.

isn't rusling in the same boat?

Re: 3. Scott Gumbleton

If hes ready for a RD19-29 start he may as well take that bit longer with his recovery. Sit the season out, or just play VFL Reserves or whatever(do VFL have a reserves grade?)

Our 18th pick from last year Luke Shuey has just had his 3rd serious injury for the year which means another 6-8 weeks. I would much rather he get his body right and up and running for next year considering how late in the season he would be returning

Re: How Far Away is Scott Gumbleton from Returning to Play Football?

He made his comeback in the VFL a few weeks ago, hurt his cheekbone, had a couple of weeks off, and then came back in the VFL again this weekend. As long as his shoulders stay alright, he should definitely be right in the mix to play in the Seniors before the year is out. Obviously shoulder injuries don't help in footy, but they wouldn't as deabilitating in everyday life as problems with the discs in your in your back would be I wouldn't think.

I wasn't saying what I did in a "Haha, you picked an injury-prone dud" kind of way. I want to see him out there firing as much as the next person. I'd prefer to see someone succeed or fail on their own merits, rather than have injury decide it for them, regardless of what club they play for.
