I am not sure Hine was much of a defender either regardless of his kicking issues.

Maybe we have kept Warren due to his extra ability in this regard? He showed a bit in his one AFL game defensively.

They're not a glamorous AFL highlights package (justified by the fact he was almost definitely playing to instruction) but the stuff he was doing defensively in the Brisbane game was really sound.

I liked Hine but Warren looks a bit neater as a player, though Hine looked more physical in the contest.

Warren is as hard a worker as you will get and probably better suited to the half back role, both offensively and defensively, than Hine. Whether or not he develops enough to get past the likes of Mullett, Macmillan and Wright is another question, but he will certainly keep those guys on their toes with his effort and work ethic.

Classic coaches player is Max the Warren. He would be on the list primarily as depth I would think, with the coaches knowing he can do a stopping job if called on.

I actually think Warren has copped more stick than deserved in the NAB game thread.

Betts is a quality player, and has equally beaten much more experienced defenders than Warren.

Looks a very disciplined defender and player generally in terms of attitude and conditioning.

Generally if a key forward kicks 5 it's attributed to a lack of midfield pressure, the lack of support from other defenders, players not adhering to structures, the quality of said forward etc.

But if one of the best small forwards in the league kicks 5 in a scratch match all the onus hangs solely on a 1 game rookie.

I think you mean owness.

Because he was owned.

Not good enough.

Can't say I have a huge amount of faith in the guy judging by exposed form, but we really don't need him this year.

For mine he's a bit like Maj, if he can keep working on his game and become a serviceable player in 2 years time then the faith the club has in him will have paid off.

I just can't see him getting that much time. He's in the Harper camp in terms of deadline to make an AFL career at this club.
Harper Who?

Given we won the inside 50 count by a fair way it's hard to say that the midfield battle made a huge difference. Agreed, you can't put all of it on Warren, and I'm not the type to deathride a player until they get delisted, but after three and a bit years on the list, you'd hope he could have some kind of impact. He's in as a specialist small defender so if his opponent kicks five goals on him it's hard to see the upside no matter which way you slice it. I certainly hope he does make it, because that Nick Smith-style shutdown small is a player type we could really use.

Cam Mooney kicked 4.3 on Scott Thompson in one of his early games.

Should we have binned SDT then?

Was it Scotty's fourth year on the list?

The side as a whole was rusty, Tarrant was fumbling his way around the defence as an intercepting player and the fact Betts got free with little between him and goal suggests the whole defence was out of sorts.

Us winning inside 50s doesn't in any way mean we pressured their inside 50 entries.

No but he turned 22 in his debut year and had 3-4 years of local footy and VFL behind him.

Max will turn 22 this year.

I'm not suggesting he'll be a world beater but I think judging a bloke who had 2 AFL standard games over 6 months apart - 1 of which was an appalling team display that didn't provide much support to a debutant and the other was a scratchy blow the cobwebs preseason effort - is a little mischevious.

Put him in against GWS while the team had a point to prove and he might've chalked up 20 possessions, shut down a playmaker and had everyone using that as a point of reference from thereon. There's an element of luck in all this.

Fair point. Here's hoping he gets some more chances.

3. Max Warren enjoyed a different role, playing further up the ground on a wing.

“He’s done everything we can probably ask of him as a small defender, so it was just to see him up in a different sort of role and to really test himself aerobically as well,” Dyer said.

“He ran some really good patterns and pushed into defence and helped out as well.”

Warren was a strong contributor in the opening two quarters in particular.

“Probably till half-time he was probably close to best on ground. He was getting the ball, coming off the line and using it really well.

“He probably didn’t find as much of it in the second half, but for a first go on the wing he didn’t look like someone who hadn’t played there before.”
