It's the correct decision. When he got the ball the nearest Gold Coast player was outside 9m. The Richmond player invited the pressure.

Those two are why it's deliberate.

But then every player should be pinged as often they have time to get a handball or kick off unless they are running towards goal.

There was no one within 9 metres. Its different if a guy is being swarmed on the goal line. He stood still, looked up and then walked back towards the goals. It's so clearly a free kick.

Second most clearances in a game since the stat was recorded for Rowell.

Surpassed Cripps at 19

I thought that was objectively a free kick according to the law
It's an inconsistent and subjective rule based on umpire interpretation. It's like the "insufficient attempt" rule as it's a subjective opinion of the umpires. The rules should be made more clear and objective.

Not denying that. Looking back it was a free. But the definition in the rule book stating that a player who is not under immediate pressure or who has time to dispose of the ball means 99% of those instances should result in a player being pinged as they generally have enough time to get a handball off.

Seeing the distress on the face of those Richmond fans behind the goals is why I follow the footy

Not as entertaining as the tears of several lions fans last night. 😍

Quite a mature and strong performance from the Suns, really. Were challenged hard, but weathered it and then went on to win.

A few earlier flakier Suns sides might have decided this was all a bit too hard after not getting their front-running win.....good on them for showing some spine at last.

You answered your own confusion in your post. It depends whether a player is facing immediate pressure. If there is no one around, it's a free kick, if they gather the ball and face immediate pressure it's not a free kick.

Look up the word immediate in the dictionary

Hopefully Matt Rowell emerges as a top mid of the comp this year
