AFL Darling Downs - 2013 Season

Remove this Banner Ad

Exciting times ahead on the Darling Downs with the addition of two new clubs taking the number of sides contesting the senior competition to eleven. The Chinchilla Suns and South Burnett Saints join last years competitors at a time when interest in Australian Rules Football in the region is at it's highest. Added to this the involvement of the Brisbane Lions who are holding their Community Camp on the Downs in mid February means that our great game will be front and center in the media in the build up to the season.

A brief run down on this years competing clubs -

Chinchilla Suns - Brand new club starting from scratch. Chinchilla has exploded in the past couple of years due to the mining boom in western Queensland. They have ticked all the boxes and come across as being a very professionally run outfit, they have had outstanding numbers to pre-season training and are looking to make their mark early.

Coolaroo Roos - One of the powerhouses of the competition, these boys are always contenders. Senior coach Nick Barker knows how to get every last ounce out of his playing group and will leave no stone unturned as the Roos attempt to go all the way in 2013. A heartbreaking Preliminary Final loss last season to eventual premiers, Toowoomba Tigers, will no doubt have the Roos ready to impose themselves on the competition.

Dalby Swans - New president Scott Matthews will be looking to build on the work done by his predecessor Tony Butcher as the Swans strive to take the next step. For a long time Dalby have dominated the junior competitions but the task in front of them now is to translate that success to their senior side. With a host of talented juniors coming through success won't be far away, perhaps this is the year they make their mark.

Goondiwindi Hawks - One of the iconic clubs on the Downs, the Hawks have fallen on tough times recently. They are without doubt a proud club and president Paul Leahy and his faithful offsiders are doing all they can to get the Hawks back flying high. No other club in the competition travel as far as the Hawks but they turn up each week and always give a good account of themselves. It's a matter of time before they are once again contenders.

Highfields Lions - Plenty of excitement around Highfields as a new era dawns. Not only do they have a new president in the respected Chris Sheath, they also have ex Melbourne Demon Drew Dale at the helm of the senior side for 2013. The Lions have always had the talent and desire and are sure to be one of the teams to watch this season. They are quietly confident they can go further this year after narrowly missing a finals berth in 2012. Plenty of young talent plus a good mix of experience puts them right amongst the contenders.

Lockyer Valley Demons - If premierships were given out for work off field the Demons would be shooting for three in a row. Tony and Donna Bowers and their band of loyal helpers do it tough, really tough. The good news is there is light at the end of the tunnel with a new ground in the works and very good growth in their junior numbers, things are starting to look up. They have some exciting young talent coming through and the Demons are sure to be there when the whips are cracking in the very near future.

South Burnett Saints - The second of the the new clubs to join the league for 2013 the Saints are up and running. The South Burnett has long been a breeding ground of talented junior footballers and the Saints are tapping into that to get their club moving forward. They will be making every effort to ensure that Lyle Vidler Oval is their fortress, a place other clubs fear. They have strong leadership at the top and training numbers have been awesome so watch the Saints as they look to make their mark.

South Toowoomba Bombers - So close yet so far for the Bombers in 2012. A great season which in the end yielded only the minor premiership left the boys from Harristown wondering what happened. What happened was the best team on the Downs in the modern era, Toowoomba Tigers, did what they always do and stepped up when it mattered, winning their third consecutive flag. The Bombers will regroup and have another crack but after winning only one Grand Final from four GF appearances in the past five years they have a few hurdles to get over.

Toowoomba Tigers - Without doubt the most dominant club of the modern era. Premierships in 2010, 2011 and 2012 prove that the Tigers know how to get the job done. A different look at the club this season however as one club legend replaces another at the helm. Senior coach, Andrew Farr, has retired after guiding the club to a three-peat. Farry always wore his heart on his sleeve and his love of the Tigers was there for all to see. Replacing him was always going to be difficult but in th end there was really only one bloke who could, John "Box" Wilson. This guy is adored by the Tiger faithful and you can have no doubt that the playing group will give Box all they have. Can they make it four? It would be a brave man to bet against it.

University Cougars - Another of the power clubs of the competition the Cougars are also in a transition phase as new coach, Shane Melrose, instills his brand of no nonsense football into his playing group. Uni are always up near the pointy end of the ladder and play an attractive brand of football but also enjoy getting down and dirty when required. Knocked out in a heartbreaking loss in the elimination final last season the Cougars will be looking to take big steps this year. Beware the Cougars, they are coming.

Warwick Redbacks - The 2011 runners up are going to have facilities the envy of the league this year as Roddies Oval comes into it's own. Driven by president Keith Clarke, the development in Warwick is first class and it won't be long before the Redbacks turn it into a fortress. Some super talented players coupled with astute coaching means that the Redbacks will once again be a force to be reckoned with. Don't be surprised to see them once again contesting the finals and once there they have the talent to take it all.

Impressive Reardo, that's a pretty big league ( 11 teams) be interesting to see what happens if another team ever joins, 2 divisions maybe ??.

Really difficult to run two divisions as all senior clubs have juniors as well, keeping the competition even in all age groups means that having the one division is probably the only fair way to go about it. The clubs most affected will be Goondiwindi and South Burnett as their travel component is greater than the other clubs.

The south burnett saints played their first ever game yesterday against the pomona demons... although the final score was a bit of a blow out following an onslaught of goals in the third quarter by pomona, it was a great first up hit out with plenty of positive signs for the saints... with one more practice match to come this week at bribie island it gives the saints a chance to work on some areas they struggled with against pomona...after yesterdays performance im betting the saints will suprise a few teams this year.

Great news Saint, looking forward to seeing the red, white and black give the competition a real shake. All the best mate.

Thanks Reardo.

The boys had another big day yesterday travelling to bribie island to compete in a round robin format consisting of three 35 minute games (two 17.5 minute halves per game). We played against some quality sides, the bribie island bulldogs, zillmere and gympie. We were outclassed against bribie and zillmere and got comprehensively beaten with out troubling the scoreboard but were equally matched against gympie only going down by a few points due to basic errors and poor dicipline.

All in all it was another good hitout in preperation for round 1 with alot of encouaging signs and a lot of improvnent from a few players. The boys are feeling the effects today from a very hot day. It'll hold us in good stead for a big season.

P.s look out for an impressive irish recruit playing for the saints this year he only started playing aussie rules this year and is already amongst our most influential and most important players, really courageous and has all the attributes to becoming a very high quality footballer.

Yeah I heard Ilesy has made the move, I think he is playing for Morningside, hope he does well. It would be great to see Gundy once again become a force in the league, I've heard they have recruited very well and will give things a shake this season. They host Uni this week at home in what will be a good test to see where they are at.

Round 1 gets underway this Saturday in what is shaping as the most even competition on the Downs for years.

CHINCHILLA SUNS v DALBY SWANS
The Suns are an unknown quantity at this point being a brand new club. They have been doing everything right off-field with an extremely professional set-up ensuring they will be financially viable. They will be super keen to get off on the right foot against what is sure to be a vastly improved Dalby Swans outfit which will be bolstered by some talented ex juniors returning to the ranks. Should be a cracker.

LOCKYER VALLEY DEMONS v SOUTH BURNETT SAINTS
Another game where one of the new additions to the league, the Saints, come up against an improving side in the Demons. Only a couple of years ago the Demons were in the same boat starting a club from scratch but with hard work off field they are turning their fortunes around. The Saints have been active in the pre-season playing a few matches against quality opposition and shouldn't be underestimated. Very intriguing and sure to give both clubs a measure of where they are at.

HIGHFIELDS LIONS v WARWICK REDBACKS
Highfields have had a trying off-season but under the leadership of new President, Chris Sheath, look set to once again mount a challenge. With strong junior numbers and a professional off field set up the Lions have great cause for optimism. The Redbacks suffered a bit of a let down last season after making the GF in 2011 but all reports are that they are on track to once again give the competition an almighty shake, their new facilities at Roddies Oval are sure to be the envy of the league.

GOONDIWINDI HAWKS v UNIVERSITY COUGARS
After a couple of years in the wilderness the sounds coming out of Goondiwindi are extremely promising. This proud club has recruited well over the off season and from all reports will be a difficult proposition for all opposing clubs in 2013. The Cougars have a new head coach in Shane Melrose who has been extremely successful at junior level and now gets the opportunity to get the Cougars to the premiership that has been so close over recent seasons.

TOOWOOMBA TIGERS v SOUTH TOOWOOMBA BOMBERS
The GF replay from last season should once again be a game not to be missed. The Tigers stamped themselves as the greatest side in the modern era after winning their third straight premiership in 2012. New coach John "Box" Wilson is a club icon and will have the Tiger boys playing out of their skin, much as they did for his predecessor Andrew Farr. The Bombers have probably been underachievers over the past few years making 5 of the last 6 GF's but only tasting success once back in 2008.

Some great games to start the season and if you think I'm going to tip a winner in any of them you are sorely mistaken. I'll update the page next week, best of luck to all.

The saints boys hit the track with great intensity tonight with the excitment starting to mount coming into the business end of the week and our first ever game in the darling downs comp. Every single one of the boys are pumped and ready to go and cant wait for the first bounce. We're missing a few boys through injurys picked up in the pre season but will still field a strong team ready to make an impact from the get go. Im confident we can get a win straight up... Get ready lockyer valley, the saints are marching in!

The boys are looking forward to a bigger challenge this week against coolaroo. Not sure who the advantage lays with or if there is any advantage at all with coolaroo coming off the bye and the saints coming off a pretty good first round win. We're well aware that Coolaroo are one of the power houses of the league and once again are striving for premiership glory this year and will want to start their season with a solid win. We are confident in our selves that if we stick to our structures we should give them a good competative game and maybe even snatch another win. Good luck to the rest of the teams competing this weekend. Lets go sainters.

We got a reality check today against coolaroo. We have got a lot to improve on and in time i think we will but we got out classed today. Miels Grice killed us booting 15 goals our small developing backline couldnt hold the big bloke back. Adam Green was a handfull aswell for us aswell as the silky skilled and very athletic Phil Dreise who i thought was probably best on ground we just couldnt run with him. We only had 20 players and lost two through injury so couldnt rotate off the bench and we went into the game with out a couple of our better players in Ty Snow and Lucas Walsh but theres no excuses we just have to learn from this work hard and improve so we can challenge the better sides. We now know the standard that is expected at this level. Next week we have Goondiwindi home at Kingaroy expect the boys to put a better performance in for our first home game. Go sainters.

Did I see Brendan Iles playing for Warwick again on the weekend? I heard he did go to Brisbane for footy but I guess I was misinformed.

Pretty sure he starts in Brisbane this weekend but who knows?? He's played the first two rounds with the Redbacks but i think that was due to other circumstances.
