Are Geelong about to do a Carlton & Essendon?

Why would he go to North "just yet" or "in the future"? North have the biggest issues with youth. North are built to win now (they won't), not for a year or two. And not to be a homer, but Collingwood should be on the list.

Keep your eyes on us - we're going the same path.

Exactly I agree. North have an old list
And I agree even more if Danger is serious about winning a premiership in Victoria to either join either Tigers or Collingwood

Neither do you Ottens, Corey, Ling, Ablett (sort of), Mooney etc
Of those you mentioned Johnson has gone from midfield into being a forward, Kelly, Bartel and Mackie have missed bulk games. Only Enright and Lonergan have been consistent performers for us this year.

With Mooney and Ottens you already had Hawkins developing.
You simpy don't replace Ablett but with your midfield depth he was "coverable".
Ling couldn't be replaced either, and its only been the last few seasons that Guthrie has played that run with role.
Geelong are teetering, and I can see them falling off the cliff in the next couple of years.

Last nights game they had 11 guys over 150 games experience. Only 6 guys under 50 games.

Reckon the Bombers will dump 4 kids next week for Melksham, Giles, Fletcher and Hocking.

Cooney will also unfortunately come into the 22 when fit.

The problem is guys like Ashby, Obrien, Steinberg probably aren't up to it. But after years in the system, at least you are now finding out.

They either need to get Danger or have at least one year where they really bottom out to get a top 1-3 pick and get a genuine star. Finishing top 4 for 10 years in a row is fun, but does impact on your draft eventually

No, they have been more proactive with their list. I think they will drop to the mid lower zone for a small period but they won't drop off the cliff.

Geelong are turning over their list, they've just got a total lack of 24-28yos. Having these young kids start their careers playing with guys like Jimmy B, Enright, Kelly, SJ would be fantastic for their development.

It's a genuine catch 22. If the Cats want to avoid getting into a situation like the Crows had in 2009 when we had a slew of champions retire all at the same time, they should let the older guys trickle out of the team.

If they go down that path though, they run the risk of hurting their player development.

Cats did it and snared 3 flags without having a pick higher than 7.
It CAN be done, but everything has to go right.

Keep in mind Geelong did it with the advantage of the old F/S system and they had some ridiculously good F/S picks. With the current system it will be even harder. Nothing is impossible of course but the margins for error are even slimmer. Not only the advantage of securing guys like Ablett, Scarlett, Hawkins but the secondary advantage of not using top picks on them. Eg under the new system they would have probably missed out on Selwood to secure Hawkins.

There is no "about to".... it is happening, they stink currently and the club has been caught napping. Geelong are no better than Carlton and Essendon, marginally better at best, but there is little in it. The Geelong list is awful and has a long way to go, it requires a complete overhaul and there is no point sticking your head in the sand and pretending it will all go away. There is very little talent down there, they have now completely collapsed this year and next year will be diabolical, possibly a winless season coming up for the Cats. By 2016 they will be the worst team in the competition. They will return, it's going to take a while though, but reality has caught up with the Cats and that reality is they are currently shocking! It was good while it lasted.

It's already happening, imo

In big trouble.

No they didn't.
The "old" system was exactly the same for every other club in the land.
The only "steal" the Cats got was Hawkins who only counted in 1 of 3 flags.
The others (Scarlett and Ablett mainly) were ordinary juniors who the Cats DEVELOPED into the players they became, you know, like guys like Bartel, Corey, Chapman, Enright etc...

Chris Scott still thinks their best can beat anyone.

Well a weaker list did only around 15 months ago. We were still up there after chapman, corey etc left. But yes he is a bit out of touch atm.

It just seems the same players have dropped off. Sure we've played 5 or so new players but they're still the same as playing horlin smith, hunt, brown, smedts, sheringham, burbury and so on.

We shouldn't be going this bad. The same players just don't want to win, only interested in hanging in there.. lazily close margins just waiting for the opposition to blow them away every week. Not interested in putting teams away anymore that's the issue.

This. Much of our rebuild was to be centred on the core group of Duncan, Menzel, Christensen, Vardy and to a lesser extent Cowan.

The fact 4/5 of them have (very likely) been a bust has meant that there hasn't been a smooth transition away from being reliant on Bartel, SJ, Mackie, Kelly etc. and that this sharp drop has been arguably inevitable.

That and our midfield sucks.

They rely on Selwood so much that if he is curtailed they are certain to lose.

They have topped up with Mitch Clark which hasn't worked.

Young kids coming through? Most of them don't look like they'll be as good as the previous generation and don't compare too well to kids at other clubs.

The investment in Caddy has reaped an ok midfielder but not the gun they were expecting.

The question is why are so many old guys playing? Why aren't more kids being played?

You serious?

What sort of kids can you pick up when you spend nearly ten years at the top? Very hard to get an O'meara, Wines, Crouch, Bont, etc when you are winning flags.

That poster that was given as a goal in the 09 GF from Hawkins certainly counted. Got gifts with the old rule F/S selections so they could keep their draft picks for Bartel etc. V lucky. Then they got to sell Ablett, who they got for free, so double dipped again. No team will ever get that outrageous luck, from the old F/S rule and that goal umpire error, again. They are heading for the bottom, fast.

How can you type with those thick rosey glasses on?!?
You have no idea whatsoever.

I'm not certain they're heading for the bottom fast and I wish them no bad luck, but the rest of your post is very accurate, they certainly had a good run & maybe deserved it.

Tigers are pretenders, IMO only Collingwood an Hawthorn an Geelong are those

Too bad those priority picks and those other top 10s didn't quite pan out.

I guess Luke Ball at least got a flag for his troubles.

Stats show experienced teams win more often and are usually in the top 8. There are a few exceptions here and there but there are also some people that get rich from tattslotto.

They look like they are failing their post golden generation rebuild.
Thanks for your advice but we won't be taking any advice from Essendon - on anything.

You should have no problem acknowledging your incredible run of luck, just don't expect it to happen again. They have changed the F/S rule and the goal review system. Not sure Kosi as our PP made too much difference TBH. Anyway, enjoy your decent.
