Fill in the gaps game

Ridley - ##1 - Kelly
McGrath - Zerk-Thatcher - Redman
Langford - Shiel - ##2
Martin - ##3 - Hobbs ##4
#5
- Wright - Jones ##6
Draper - Merrett - Caldwell
Parish* - Laverde ##7 - Perkins - Stringer

Kids who could do with the year at VFL level - D'Ambrosio, Baldwin, Cox, Reid, Bryan, Menzie, Wanganeen & both Davey's once recruited.

*Not opposed to trading Parish high but conscious he's a good player and we'll have a new coach/plan next year
#1: short-term Laverde, longer-term Zach Reid
#2/#4: a combination across wings and HF of Langford, Martin, Durham and Cox.
#3: Jones
#5: Guelfi until/unless he tails off. Depth is Snelling, Wanganeen, Menzie or a Davey
#6: one of Baldwin, Voss, Eyre, NcBride, but more likely one of the depth small forwards in #5
#7: D’Ambrosio with Hind, Lord as depth

Hobbs or Perkins are in the VFL. Both if Snelling rediscovers his 2021 form.
So restructured:

Tall backs(3): BZK, Ridley, Reid (depth: Lav, Brand)
Small/med backs (4): Redman, Kelly, McGrath, Mass (depth: Hind, Lord)
Onball/centre (6): Draper, Merrett, Parish, Shiel, Caldwell, Perkins (depth: Hobbs, A Davey, and then players from elsewhere, eg McGrath, Langford, Stringer)
Wing/HF (4): Langford, Cox, Martin, Durham (no depth, restructure)
Tall/Med Forwards (3): Wright, Jones, Stringer (depth: Baldwin, Voss, Eyre, McBride)
Small Forwards (2): Guelfi, Snelling (depth: Menzie, Tex, Daveys)

Wonder if there will be some discontent from the players with the way the club is being managed and enticed out.
Merrett and Parish the two obvious ones.

Not sure many of the others would garner a heap of interest. Perhaps some of the younger guys recruited over the last 2-3 years but they would be more likely to hold tight.

as etc pointed out, I had forgotten about the live trading aspect of the draft night.

No-one is bidding on Davey early in the 1st round either so that is an option as well.

Depending on what other picks they land for players moving use those plus future picks to get a pick between 8 and 13.

Expect a bid after 15 for Davey.

I wouldn't be against the idea of trading out our F2 + pick 21 (22) for an early/mid teens selection in 2022 that would be ideal. Davey is going to be bid on so getting 3 top end talented kids together will bode well for us in the future.

It looks like somewhere between 15-25 on Davey. Which is awkward as our 2nd is right in that range. And where you could legitimately trade up to (Swans/Lions 1st) will be very close.

5 gone from the main list already with Francis and Ham also gone soon and potentially Heppell as well.

And we were carrying less on our main list this year so big turnover at the Bombers.

Eagles Pick 2, Junior Rioli and a future 3rd for

Pick 5, 23 and a future 1st.

Recon in 2023 Parish moves as a trade or as a fa and gets Essendon back into 1st round.

Not worth it for Essendon given Rioli's age and likely bottom 4 (or at least 6) finishers next season

They may do it though if they are desperate for Wardlaw (whom is exactly who they need)

I think at that point we'd still want our 2x picks.
Would be wanting quality closer to taranto or dunkley for our future 1st
Id be ok to do 5 and 23 for 2 if the eagles want to come back and have a couple of picks.

Shiel +100% of his salary + 22 to Doggies for #11.

They get a top level midfielder to replace Dunkley who doesn’t impact the salary cap, and can in-trade 22 for Lobb (or use it with 28 if Freo are demanding more).

We upgrade our pick ahead of the Davey pick and lose a player who due to age won’t be in our long term plans.

They don't need more mids - they need help with their backline - and if anything defensive mids.

Imagine Shiel and Trelours kick to kick - would certainly get them fit chasing the footballs.

And who do we replace Shiel with? Unless we get a ready made player like Dunkley in we shouldnt be trading any of our best mids.

He was out best mid in the second half of the season and the reason we had that little purple patch where we beat Sydney,Brisbane,Gold Coast,Saints

You notice how crap our midfield was against Port and Tigers with Shiel out

Essendon don't have many good players and fans are happy to trade to them out for a speculative draft pick I dont get it

People put way too much value on draft picks

Shiel played against the Tigers and Port.

On those 4 games you listed above he polled 6 coaches votes - Merrett polled 18.

I think you have either over rated him or not sure who he is.

Take a Stocker and a Setterfield to give us a bit of depth and run the likes Perkins, Caldwell, Hobbs through like we should, plus Langford, Martin and Durham who all did centre bounces at times this year.

We are near the bottom of the ladder with the seniors players we have in their primes. We aren't doing a Collingwood, we don't have the cattle. So move out who won't be there long term, so we can acquire actual elite talent and position ourselves well for a top 3 pick next year, hopefully get Harley Reid and maybe Duursma if a Parish goes as free agent.

Strategy should be maximize expendable talent and replace with cheapest competent depth.

Langford is not a mid and a crap one at that.

Setterfield is no good that's two clubs now who don't rate him.

Stocker from what's been said dosent have a tank and suffers from mental health issues pass on both. not once this year we had a fully fit squad play chunks of the season together like top sides have.

The list has underchived compiled with a hard fixture, crap coaching and injuires to key players is why we finished bottom 5.

You need some experienced players to guide the youngsters we get rid of everyone who's over 26/27 then those young players will have no one to look up too when the going gets tough

Blowing up the list and filling up with high draft picks that majority of fans seem to want is not the way to go you need a mix of both when building a list.
