ESSENDON is the most popular club in the AFL after it was revealed the Bombers sell the most replica guernseys in Australia.

Figures supplied by Rebel show the Bombers sell more shirts nationwide than cross-city rival Collingwood.

AFL premier Hawthorn came third with the Sydney Swans rounding out the top four.

Adelaide, Carlton, Richmond and Geelong all grabbed a finals place in the AFL guernsey merchandise ladder.

Essendon chief marketing officer Justin Rodski said he was pleased but not surprised by the results of the nationwide Rebel survey.

“We’re obviously aware that the Essendon brand spreads far and wide and we have a huge supporter base,” he said.

“The red sash is famous throughout the world and has become synonymous with Essendon.

“The red sash is something our fans hold very dearly across their hearts.”

A Sydney Swans spokesman said it was too early to judge the commercial success of its star recruit Lance Franklin, but his No. 23 jersey was already the club’s bestseller.

“Crowds, membership and television audiences are up this season but it’s hard to measure the impact any one player has had on those results,” he said.

Several AFL clubs have revealed their top selling numbered guernseys from their club shops.

The most popular Bombers jersey sold was Jobe Watson’s No. 4, Scott Pendlebury’s No. 10 was a big hit with Magpies fans, while Cyril Rioli’s No. 33 sold most at Hawthorn.

Joel Selwood’s No. 14 rules at Geelong with Trent Cotchin’s number No. 9 roaring loudly at Richmond.

Nathan Jones’ No. 2 jumper was most popular at the Demons while St Kilda’s Lenny Hayes No. 7 edged out Nick Riewoldt’s No. 12.

Brent “Boomer” Harvey’s No. 29 was the big seller at North Melbourne with Luke Dahlhaus’ No. 6 guernsey a firm favourite at the Bulldogs.

After claiming the wooden spoon for the least number of nationwide guernsey sales, GWS Giants were also the only AFL club in the country not to sell numbered guernseys to its fans.

No wonder we're so far down the list, we're selling jumpers with the wrong number on it.

ASADA is a hell of a stimulant
ASADA is not a factor. Maybe the move to Ethihad has clouded the view slightly but Essendons popularity as a national brand has always set it (and Collingwood) above the pack in terms of overall support. It sold the most guernseys last year and again this year without in field success which is always the ultimate stimulant of sales not being a factor. When I worked at Essendon in the late 1990's it was number 1 in merchandising as well. Nothing has changed. I mean, over 33,000 were at Ethihad on Saturday to see them play the Giants. No MCC and AFL members pushing up the figure.

Collingwood (and Richmond) of late have shown what a run of poor form can do to crowds and merchandising sales. Essendon havent had home crowds in the liw 20,000 at the G ir Ethihad since the mid 1990's. Essendon's national appeal is 2nd to possibly only one. The guernsey dales just remind us of how popular Essendon continues to be, without the benefit of on field form driving the sales up.

Man Essendon could afford to pay two head coaches with that much income.

Not sure you sold the most guernseys last year. You could have but the figures that you will likely use (the same article last year) was up to the start of September 2013. We were second and I would suggest we probably outsold you for the year only because we won the flag. According to the the following article...

Merchandise return

Hawthorn sold an estimated $400,000 worth of merchandise on Sunday at its family day celebration at its former home ground Glenferrie Oval. The club’s chief executive, Stuart Fox, said the total return Hawthorn will receive from grand final merchandise, including memorabilia such as DVDs and t-shirts will more than double that figure.

“Merchandise is a really big opportunity and if you get it right you can make a million dollars out of it,” Fox said.

Ditto if we salute this year. That's not to say we are bigger than Collingwood and Essendon, although our brand is growing rapidly by the year (just look at our largest crowds) rather the reality of on field success and off field prosperity

even better when the team hasn't won a final for 10 years & been shite for 8 of those years as well.
how much bigger would the club be if they went through the successful period what the hawks are going through
even in the stats you collected in the crowd averages. Essendon has a very solid fan base who support the club in the crap times.

You have your fan base because you've won 16 flags with success in almost all eras (1970s and 2000s notwithstanding)

We've got the following we've got due to winning 11 flags in 90 or so years (all over the last 6 decades)

The on field / off field success relationship is obvious. Would the Dogs have more fans (and merchandise sales) if they won 10 flags instead of 1?

Richmond encourages its supporters/members to buy merchandise directly from the club's 'Tigerland Superstore' and not from Rebel or the AFL store as 100% of the profits stay with the club.[/QUOTE]
do you want data from the annual reports from the last 3 years?
Essendon dominates that as well

Quality over quantity.

That other saga has shown they have the quantity but not the quality.

Flawed analysis as what about guernseys bought directly from each club?

Richmond encourages its supporters/members to buy merchandise directly from the club's 'Tigerland Superstore' and not from Rebel or the AFL store as 100% of the profits stay with the club.

True but Rebel don't sell microwaves;)

I'm surprised Essendon have records of this :D
Merchandise is a good effort but remember there are all sorts of revenue sources for clubs. It's not the be all and end all.

yes it is one of the several forms of revenue for clubs but this one is how much each club is making out of merchandise and how much they are selling.
given Essendon has been crap for the past decade and up in the highest selling bracket, how much bigger would the club be if they had played in 8 successive final series and won a flag or won multiple premierships like the cats and hawks
