Opinion Few and far between: the rare howlers made by the club

Justin Murphy.
Had to mention the name, but he also did play some good games.

In hindsight it was a masterstroke. We needed something for the playing group to bond over and it sounds like they bonded over their hatred for him. We also gave up pick 11 in the spud filled 2000 draft (they got Trent Sporn) while we got back pick 23 in the gun 2001 draft which gave us back to back picks which we got Johnson with the second of. So some team bonding while getting Steve Johnson for Trent Sporn is a positive I reckon (mentioning that Shaun Burgoyne was taken immediately after Sporn just ruins a good story).

What did we give up for Marcus Drum?

I respect your opinion, but for me, it wasn't so much what he did / didn't achieve on the field but the damage he caused off it.

He broke the morale of the club and lost the players, setting our cause back by years.
He said in his Open Mike interview that the only reason he came to Geelong in the first place was because he thought he was going to play. After Hawks delisted him he thought he could play on another year, kind of like the Chappy scenario but Blight wanted him as a coach instead. In hindsight I think an on field leadership role would have suited him better but those were different times.

Has nobody mentioned trying to rush Egan back in 2007? Probably the worst mistake the club has made in the past decade.

Was this the clubs decision though?

Either way. s**t thing to happen to a potential star of the comp.

The club should've forced him to sit it out. With the promise of finals and a club chasing their first premiership in decades it would've been a difficult thing to do but ultimately not being strong on that cost Egan and us dearly. It was interesting to see McCartney say straight away that Higgins would be out for the season when he did his navicular last year. I reckon the memory of what happened to Egan hurts him and the people that were at the club then pretty bad.

Did not know this.

Overlooking Ken Hinkley for senior coach. I think CS is a good coach but Kenny from Camperdown is a great coach.
Let's compare at the end of their careers. So far, CS is ahead on winning % and flags, not that stats matter, or do they?

no potential needed, Egan was a star and was named at CHB in the 2007 All Australian team. Had not even played 60 games yet but was beating most of the best forwards in the competition that year.
I know we got Harry Taylor due to that unfortunate circumstance but Egan was something else and you can only wonder what he may have gone on to become after another 100 games under his belt.

Just as a side issue, for you, Taylor or Egan?

Just the 2008 GF

No - couldnt care less about it now - mainly because we won in 2009 - and that squared the ledger

The only missed opportunity - is the 2013 PF - 20 points up at 3qtr time - and given that Hawthorns greatest ever come from behind win at 3qtr time in its entire history - is 28 points against Richmond in the mid 1950s ( heard Bruce Mac - say that in a Friday night this year) that shows the magnitude of that loss

At the very best Geelong could have 4 Flags in this era - as i said earlier - the 09 win squares away the 08 loss - so im comfortable with that

However that 2013 PF loss is the only dissappointment - it would have been 12 in a row against the Hawks - Clarkson would have ended up coaching the WCE - Ken Judge said he was a Gonzo - if Hawthorn had lost that game - Hawthorn were one quarter away from a monumental disaster - and any long time Geelong supporter - wouldnt have minded seeing that disaster fully imploding

2013 was a missed opportunity. The chance wasn't so much blown in the PF as it was the QF, though.
Seeing Paul Chapman, in his 250th game, sitting on the bench was a an absolute disgrace. Deserved to lose with that kind of attitude from Scott. Not to mention the management of Hawkins. "Oh, he doesn't need to be rested. Won't make any difference." So they do rest him for the QF.

The only final the Cats have won over the past three years was won because Paul Chapman rose to the occasion and dragged the side over the line. This was after his career and legacy had been spat on when he'd been given the subs vest in his 250th a week earlier. Maybe if Chapman had played the entirety of the Freo game, we would've won. That would have meant a week off and much-needed rest, a PF against a less-than-stellar Sydney outfit whose number we had that year, Chapman wouldn't have been suspended, and we would have played the Hawks in the GF with the same sort of rest they had, probably with Chapman still in the side.
