My biggest bugbear is that the Free Agency and Special Assistance Picks create a detriment to all other clubs. I believe Clubs should retain their Pick Point value from Home & Away and the assistance comes at No Detriment.

Now that points are allocated to selection picks which is used for trading players and future picks. The value of picks are also used as scale in value. An example so there is no Veale trades anymore and a judgement can be made on a trade.

The counter argument that on Draft Night the value will be reversed where latter picks will be used to pay or Father/Son, Northern Academy & NGA Academy (Post P40). Most of the pick movement is prior to this.

I have done a quick trial of this and have guessed on Free Agency Compensation. North Melbourne After 1st Round Pick (McKay), St Kilda End of 1st Round (Gresham) and Adelaide After 2nd Round Pick (Doedee) with the Norh Melbourne Compensation of End of 1st Round, After 2nd & 3rd Round Picks.

Pick Economy is for Pick 1 to Pick 72 is 49,436 points

For No Detriment all points from Home & Away remain with the allocated pick and moves down with the additional picks. The 6 additional picks are valued at 6,567 points. North Pick at 1st Round 2517 points, St Kilda Pick after 1st Round 985 points, North Melbourne Pick after 1st Round 985 Points, Fremantle - North Melbourne Pick 2nd Round 912 points, Adelaide Pick 2nd Round 703 points and Fremantle - North Melbourne 3rd Round Pick 465 points.

On the Pick list becomes Pick 3, 20, 21, 24, 32 and 44.

Here is the detriment for each club

The points are utterly meaningless unless and until you match a bid though. And if you're matching a bid you get a 20% discount and probably stockpiled over-valued later picks. By itself it seems pointless.

If you went to an auction style draft system then maybe.

I disagree I feel you are undervaluing the role and value of picks/points. As this is evolving and is a trading mechanism. This year Gold Coast selling/swapping picks for points Initially Pick 4 and may auction off the lower 1st Round picks they receive for Pick 4.

It is used as a value for players. Where they are rated Top 10.

Or Port where they are trying to find currency for the 3 players they are trying to trade for.

That's because Gold Coast are going to be matching bids. Point value is worthless to clubs that don't have Father-sons/academy players they need to match bids on.

I agree the current system is dumb. Would rather we moved to a points based bidding system for all draftees.

But there is a problem with that, if I am the Premier I will just take minimum picks, put all my points into trying to get pick 1, then take rookies.

That type of system would favour teams taking less picks in total. Unless teams were allocated an amount of points per list spot based on ladder position. That type of system would favour lower teams with a larger number of list spots.

Maybe each team has a max bid (based on ladder position) for the first 15 picks or something. Then if higher teams want to go 'all in' for Pick 16 types, good luck to them.
