I actually want to thank Steven Miles at this point.

As each day passes, more and more people are backing Victoria Park after seeing the costings. On reddit, in opinion polls, the support is coalescing behind Vic Park. If he had chosen Vic Park initially that would’ve had its own backlash and not been as popular, but with how this has developed it’s just become the naturally popular option.

So thank you Steven for making public opinion change and get behind Vic Park.

Now backtrack on your decision and then resign, thanks.

It's clear to me from Grace Grace's comments the ALP know they are ****ed at the election (tbf it's been clear to most people since Palazczuk quit)

Miles won't quit he's the glass cliff candidate. when the ALP lose the new leader will just blame him

Vic Park is the best option but i am concerned about green space loss and PT access - only 1 train station within a 15min walk (in contrast to suncorp which has roma st and milton (tho otoh its right next to the busway which is very helpful)

The thing about Vic Park is that it’s central, it’s much easier to figure out a PT option that piggybacks off the existing network because said existing network exists around it.

In contrast, trying to shoehorn in a public transport solution to QSAC would be a logistical nightmare, because it’s in the middle of bloody nowhere, meaning you can’t build any permanent solution because it will just go to waste.

Isn’t Cross River Rail going pretty close to Victoria Park?

Isn’t Cross River Rail going straight to Victoria Park?
from memory its making ekka station year round (thank god) which is within a 15 min walk

maybe they might build a direct link from roma st station to vic park? would be costly but would cut walking times

oh i agree its the best option primarily because of how central it is

honestly QSAC is such a comically bad option i can't believe they're doing that - dad still speaks of the time spent trying to get out of the carpark after seeing U2 there in 2006!

the only semi-decent way of getting there is to catch the bus to griffith and walk down the pathway - did that for many an exam back at uni

god its such a comically stupid option i almost want to see it happen

Cross River Rail runs right through Vic Park, if we wanted to we could literally just build a Vic Park Station on the existing cross river rail line.

I think to start with they’d probably just rely on Exhibition, the 5 metro stops close by and then people walking to Roma St/Central/Fortitude, and then after seeing how that goes they could decide to just build a new station fairly easily

Edit: for reference here is the track

A Victoria Park Station would likely be just after it’s come out of the tunnel, I would say about where I’ve marked it.

It’d be above ground so the cost would be quite cheap compared to everything else, I think it’s more that it would just make Exhibition station a bit irrelevant being fairly close together. But yeah an insanely easy fix if we need it.

Tomorrow will be the third day in a row that the Courier Mail is going all-out against the idea as their leading story on numerous fronts.

It might also help alleviate the gridlock on College Road & Gregory Terrace of BMW/Lexus/Audi/Mercedes/Tesla driving parents droppoing their kids off at either of the Grammar schools.

Let me preface this by saying I prefer Vic Park to QSAC.

That statement isn't true at all. QSAC isn't far from the busway, which could be extended (in the form of separated busway or bus lanes) from Griffith University station to QSAC, then onto Sunnybank and Altandi station to interchange with Beenleigh and Gold Coast trains. This won't go to waste because Mains Rd is the conduit for several major bus routes and it connects the busway to the train line.

Everyone here is understandably frustrated, but exaggeration isn't useful. QSAC isn't in the middle of nowhere, it's next to one of the busiest intersections in Brisbane (Mains Rd - Kessels Rd) and the highway. I agree there's not much in walking distance from the place though (yet).

Its complete madness because its got the fingerprints of Rugby League all over it. No other way to make sense of it. There is a real wiff on the nose here, plenty of hidden agendas
Wouldn't it be justice if they were exposed, but I doubt it .

They're all scattering and Miles is looking like the goose that grabbed the juicy carrot only to find it full of grubs.
But Coates has made it quite obvious with his ridiculous League sided recommendations being the upgrade of Suncorp Stadium and everything that has to be done to make that happen , that Miles is a mere pawn in all of this .
Ah.
It's like we are back to the good ol days when Joe was in charge.
You You You , jjjjjj just wait and see.
Wwwww one day we'll have the Olympics Mayyyyyy be ee even two .

NRL power play is the only thing that makes sense here.

I think this is simply a matter of Miles believing he was picking the option that would win him the most votes ahead of a tough upcoming state election, plus Grace being s**t scared of losing her seat due to a backlash from locals who want the amount of parkland they were promised, as it's in her seat.

That can’t happen though, think about. There’s a reason the busway doesn’t go down mains road, it’s not a tenable option. Traffic on Mains road is sh*thouse at the best of times. By extending the busway down there, you’re either condemning Mains road to become an unusable carpark by taking out traffic lanes, or you’re clearing houses and businesses.

Even the stretch from Griffith station to QSAC - again it’s either houses or clearing part of the cemetery.

It cannot and will not happen, the public outcry would make the school look like a single angry email.

It can if it were elevated (or underground, but that costs more).

I can't stress this enough, f**k cars. People should be rewarded for choosing to take the more efficient and sustainable option of public transport over driving, in the form of being able to bypass traffic jams. Buses shouldn't have to sit in them along with cars.

As above, elevated on columns above the road, or underground, avoids all this.

I agree the LNP won't do it if they gain power in October, because they'll never choose to benefit public transport more than the private car. But Miles is already facing a public outcry, so what's one more? And for all the car lovers who complain, there will be just as many people who already take public transport or would do so if it were faster, that would be in favour.

I think Brisbane has more than enough protected areas, there is a significant amount of green space and protected forests. If green space loss becomes a concern for majority of the public then the Government will acquire inner city land over time to create more green space. They can do it but currently they only do it for major infrastructure work or a Casino, that might change over time.

Wouldn't Vic park be right near the RBWH busway? It's not as close as Suncorp and the Gabba but it's a pretty manageable walk currently. Assuming there would be a path through that end of the park to the stadium.

I don't really know much about Miles but I wonder if he took on the leadership knowing he would lose it (taking one for the team) because he's got other options. I've read Cameron Murray's books (Rigged and The great housing hijack) and it's amazing how many politicians go from politics to board positions ETC and back and forth.
