Fremantle
Who gives it: Danyle Pearce
Eighty-two inside 50s in 2014. AFL Ranking first. Pearce was the number one for inside 50s at Fremantle last year but he's elevated to number one in the AFL in 2014. The Dockers like to put the ball in his hands to use that penetrating left boot and he can kick goals from outside 50.
The most efficient: Paul Duffield While Pearce goes in most often, Duffield's precision kicking makes him the most effective in the AFL at 67.7 per cent. He is the designated kick-in specialist for Fremantle as well so he is arguably the Dockers' most trusted player with ball in hand.
And who gets it: Matthew Pavlich The Dockers have been criticised in the past for being too Pavlich-centric and although that has changed over the past 18 months the veteran is still the number one target inside 50. The Dockers have gone to him 134 times and he's kicked 35 goals in total this year.
The converter: Hayden Ballantyne Fremantle score 53.2 per cent of the time from inside 50s directed to Ballantyne in 2014. - Alex Malcolm

Part of the reason having good forward pressure is so important is that it allows our backmen to move higher up the ground and cut the ball off before it can reach the centre line. And if Duff is the bloke that ends up with it, he's the best in the AFL at finding a target inside 50. I think we've been down on this for a few weeks, with us trialling three talls in the forward line (the extra being Tabs and Apeness).

Hopefully this week we'll see the return to a two tall structure, Sylvia back in the WAFL, Mayne, Balla and MDB back in the forward line... and that'll help remedy a critical part of our game plan. The experimentation with the structure and personnel up forward has been important (young talls, Sylvia getting an extended run), but looking forward to seeing this settle back down.

Would really like to see PearceD be a bit more effective with his kicks inside 50. With the number he bangs in there (most in the AFL), if he could use the ball a bit better it'll have a fair impact on our scoring.

Must admit, very surprised Danyle is #1 in the whole comp for I50's.

Will be good when Son Son comes back and starts delivering quality passes too! No doubt in my mind he's got the smarts and skill to be our best user I50.

at one point Peace and Hill were no.1 and no.2 in the comp. Shows how heavily we rely on them.

Hilly is the one we want pumping it in, Pearce's delivery is like my tee shot, gets good distance but doesn't always go where you want and sometimes goes in no mans land!
Exactly. Hill's vision & kicking skill are practically supernatural. The only one who comes close is Walters and he is one of the guys you want on the end of it.

On a per game average, Hilly and PearceD are still no 1 and 2, respectively in the AFL. The games Hilly has missed with injury are the main reason Pearce has moved ahead.

We need to also know the team numbers for inside fifties, if we are too heavily reliant on Pearce and Hill it offers two tagging options straight up.

Ask and ye shall get. We're averaging 49.7 I50s per game. The "% of total" column below show how much each of the players' average per game I50s contribute to that 49.7. Between them, Hill and PearceD account for a fifth of the whole team's inside 50 count.

I'll have to defend Pearce here. I think his kicking around the ground and especially his inside 50's are quite accurate....It's just his kicking for goal when he's got the spotlight on him that is suspect. Those goal misses when he's running by himself 15 metres out tend to stick in your head though so people tend to remember that aspect of his kicking.

Pearce usually kicks fairly straight, it is just that he tends to put them way too high - giving defenders more time to get under it and spoil. If he got less elevation, our offense might have a better chance to beat their opponents.

so if they tag Hill & Pearce, it means Fyfe & Mundy have no tag?
yes please.
I'd still prefer Hill kicking than anybody else, but we do spread the load

The number of times in clear space that he grubs the kick or shanks it just shits me to tears. I'll be licking my lips when he's got some time with the ball and expecting something good which just magnifies it.

It's not just that, Taz. He is our turnover King. We got him in specifically for his "elite" kicking skills and he hasn't reached that standard since he's been here.

He's still been a valuable addition to the side all things considered. He's not perfect but he's provided another cog to our outside brigade and contributed to Hill getting off the chain more often. I've been impressed with his consistency in his time here too - he hasn't gone missing in many games since he arrived.

It's a bit of a catch-22, because if he had truly elite skills to go with his other attributes Port would have matched our offer and never let him go.

Hehe I thought that was Fyfe according to the MB.

I watch him closely at games being his buddy and all and yes have to agree 'elite' kicking is not his strong suite. Many a facepalm moment this season.

Pearce is doing exactly what he was brought to the club to do
Add pace and take the heat of Hill.He has actually added to his brief by bringing a pretty solid inside game with him as well.Something that wasnt expected .
He is not perfect but who playing AFL is.Some are just more perfect than others.
Imagine a team of perfect players. How boring with nothing to bitch about

Don't think this are surprising stats. Hill and Pearce are the main player to move the ball inside 50 from the wing or half back. That is their main role. Other players in the list are obviously forwards and other midfielders. Pretty self explainatory...

I don't have to imagine it because some posters act like that's what we've got already and being critical of a player and/or the team is considered a crime.

Unwarranted criticism can get under the skin though.
Warranted/unwarranted is in the eye of the beholder and determined by their own personal expectations.

Which criticism would you say was unwarranted? That Danyle needs to lift his game on his disposals or that Pav needs to lift his game defensively?

Overall he's a massive net positive but his flaws and history suggest that come a big game, like a grand final, he is more likely to put in a stinker than a blinder.

Maybe he needs new contact lenses.
