As long as the suns get paid ;) Sorry to derail ya thread Matchu. Hope it does work out though sad to see the state cricket is in now.

It's fine. It's all related to the redevelopment.

Good and bad news guys. I heard on the GC news just now that plans for a permanent upgrade are definitely out the window and the upgrade will be temporary. However, the money saved from this outcome will be used to build the club's new training and admin facilities on the training oval right next to the stadium. At least we now know the club will definitely be out of the demountables in the near future!

Local Goldy news tonight just said the northern stand will only be temporary for the Comm Games, and part of the cash saved will be used to upgrade the Suns admin & training facilities into permanent buildings.

I hope the club has some input as if it is going to be built on the practice oval then it should be designed to allow expansion into a social club where people could meet before and after the game.
Imagine meeting up with mates a couple of hours before the game and then again after to watch the replay in our own social club. ******* awesome

This is the best I could find in terms of plans for the redevelopment.

Numbers worth noting:
1. AFL training field - Already exists. Anyone who has been there knows where it is and what it looks like.
2. Future GCFC Training and Admin Building - The planned area looks quite large and as Iva Bigun has stated, would be the perfect location for a social club. Unfortunately, I think the plans do not include a social club.
3. Metricon Stadium - You can see the size of the temporary northern stand in the picture.
9. Indoor Sports Hall - Will replace the existing Basketball facility right next to Metricon.
10. Jetty and Ferry Terminal - Is located a little further from Metricon than I expect but certainly nothing that is inconvenient.
12. Event Plaza/Park - This intrigues me. Seems easily accessible from the stadium and will be located on the land that the current indoor stadium is on.
13. Pedestrian Bridge - A much needed overpassing bridge on Nerang-Broadbeach Road.

I still believe the best bet for a social club is to be located to the left of the car park accross the road in that picture. Basically my idea is that as soon as you cross the overpass from Metricon you see the social club right in front of you.

Matchu do you know if everything on the left hand side of the stadium is going to remain permanent after the comm games?
There should be some really good training facilities there if so.

Well I guess you have to look at everything individually. The indoor sports hall is definitely going to be permanent and the plan was for athletics track and field to also be permanent. I believe the plan is for Gold Coast Athletics to move into the facilities and use them long term. Really not sure about the three sports fields scattered around the permanent stuff but I suppose it's possible. As you pointed out, the facilities that will be on offer to the Suns will definitely be first class in this sports precinct and should be the envy of a lot of other clubs. Below you can see the planned athletics facilities behind the stadium and the indoor stadium. You can also see what appears to be a playing field to the left of the stadium.

The old QE2 stadium had "temporary" stands for decades after the last Comm Games in Brisbane
I suspect in this day and age though the stands would be leased so they won't remain any longer than the event

Am i right in thinking with the extension work with the running track at the northern end of the oval, that the playing field become, bigger, longer?

As far as I am aware, the bottom tier up the northern end will be removed to fit the track in the stadium and the temporary grandstand will be placed further back than the current northern end seats. So yes, the field will be longer in games mode but you'd assume they'd go back to what they currently have after Comm games. No need to extend the playing field anyway.

how long is the field now? is bigger better? you know once the games are over there is no more opportunity.

with the interchange these days, id like fields to be as big as possible. how else cane we compare historical performance?

Sorry if i'm intruding, I went up for the Suns/North game earlier in the year and was really impressed with the stadium. Despite the rain and the loss :( it was a really enjoyable experience. The stadium has a great atmosphere and even though it doesn't have a roof is probably one of my favourite stadiums.

Travelling around the Gold Coast it was clear a tram line was being built, will it be connected to Metricon? because it would be very cool just to hope on a tram.

Mate, preaching to the choir. The tram, or GoldLinq as they like to call it here, is being rolled out in stages. Stage one runs from Southport to Broadbeach and is due to open in June 2014. Stage two includes extending the line to a heavy rail station and is the most they will get done before the 2018 Commonwealth Games. Further stages include connecting the line to the airport and another central area (Robina). There are no official plans to extend the light rail to Metricon but there is a long term plan of eventually turning rapid bus networks into tram extensions which is the route Metricon would fall under. Long story short, a tram line running to Metricon is at least 15 years away.

The best bet in terms of transport improvement for Metricon is actually a proposed ferry service, believe it or not.

i'll definitely be following this thread with interest over the coming years.

new admin/training facilities, overpass to a multistorey carpark over the road, some form of rapid transit to improve the transport to and from the stadium, new hotel/casino up the road potentially? ferries? imagine the overall experience if these ideas got implemented. not to mention the commonwealth games! fingers crossed for the future!

Brilliant effort :thumbsu: love ya work.
Exciting times ahead, its going to be very interesting to see the place transformed over the next 10 years. I'm sure as the Suns become bigger, bars and restaurants will pop up like anything.

Just a thought, and have no idea how it sits with Suns fans, why wouldn't a large sports club such as Southport build a social club at or near Metricon, they would probably have the financial clout and ability to possibly cut through red tape, the profits could be shared between them and the Suns ( if it was viable) ..... win/win ?.

Southport have a pretty good facility already which we share. don't know the details but would think we would have a contract with them already. Its where we did our 2013 launch.

Well some of those things I have connected the dots like the multistory car park or the tram to the stadium. The developments that look certain at this point are the Comm Games facilities (the running track, athletics field and the new indoor arena) as well as the new admin and training facilities for the Suns. The hotel/casino up the road and the ferry terminal are a maybe at this point.

Nothing promotes development like more development in the same area. Soon investors will catch on to the fact that a lot of people will be traveling through that area and will start to build on the hectares of vacant land in the area.

It's a good idea but Southport would never leave their home and the Suns don't have a close relationship with any of the other local teams. You have to really put things in perspective financially. Obviously the club doesn't have a huge amount of money to spare on those sorts of things given the Queensland Government will be paying for their new training/admin facilities. A social club would likely cost millions of dollars that they don't have to spare. I believe it's more of a long term prospect than anything in the immediate future.

So I thought I'd upload one more photo just so there is 100% clarity on where the new training facilities will be built. The yellow highlighted section is where the new training/admin facilities will be located and the red highlighted area will be a new car park for the player/staff. The old training facilities are located in the bottom left of this picture and will be removed for the Commonwealth Games grandstand.

Hey tigernova, it appears the dimensions I gave you in a previous post (160x134) were actually for the old Carrara Stadium. It would appear Metricon's real dimensions are 171x144 metres. This makes the ground the third longest in the AFL behind Subiaco and Bellerive. So not only will opposition teams have to deal with the humidity but will need to manage different ground dimensions as well.

Do people realise that Metricon would have been turned into a 40k seat stadium if we had won the right to host the 2022 FIFA World Cup? It would have then been downgraded to 27k after the World Cup. Matchu I presume the extra 2,000 seats would have been located in the open section to the left of the media facilities? I guess there is still a good chance of that happening anyway for the Comm Games. I would still prefer it to be a 35k stadium tbh.

I don't really mean Southport moving their club, but basically opening another,

Plenty of bowls, golf, leagues clubs have more than one club, Ainslie FC in Canberra have 3 or 4 clubs, Penrith Panthers has quite a few in different locations, in effect they are sort of like franchises or a chain.

Skilled Park will officially be Robina Stadium again shortly when their $800k per year naming rights sponsorship runs out. The local Goldy 9 news said tonight a new sponsor is yet to be found.

Be interesting to know how much the Metricon group pays for our stadium naming rights.

Suncorp pays about $2.5 million a year to sponsor Suncorp Stadium and ANZ pays about $3 million a year for ANZ Stadium in Sydney. Townsville's 1300SMILES Stadium is $200,000 a year for a five-year deal.
