Letter from the President: Brand research project​

President Dave Barham provides an update on the club's brand research project.

To all our Fans and Members,

The Essendon Football Club has a proud history as one of the oldest clubs in the AFL and we have a strong recognisable brand.

We are conducting a preliminary research project which centres around the Essendon brand and its elements.

The research project is in its early phase. Members and supporters have been and will continue to be canvassed as part of this process, in addition to the engagement of multiple Essendon Football Club stakeholders.

We have a proud history of more than 150 years and a deep connection to our members and supporters. This is and will always be respected and embraced.

There is no immediate action to change the club logo or any elements of the club brand. This is a longer-term project with significant work to be completed.

We proudly recognise that our future legacy begins with our proud history.

We will always be called the Bombers.

I'm not sure I like the implication of a stealth bomber.. bombing by stealth.

I think I prefer something like a German tankbusting Stuka.. a screaming divebomb that ends in the complete and utter destruction of the opposition crawling along the ground.

That's ok, but hard to put a frame around it (like a badge) and touch up with "Essendon" etc. In my stealth version i tried to point it upwards as per a few people who said that was something they'd like to see in a new bomber (pointing up).

I like the old WW2 bomber images. That first one I did does have the bomb blast you're referring to wiping out the opposition (blood red).


Maybe you could have a bomb itself (with Essendon FC written on it) and a footballer underneath shielding himself in terror lol??

PC brigade always have to ruin everything. But I'll see if I can whip one up for you. Another idea which the PC brigade would love is that front on caricature of the Una-bomber with Essendon FC on his hoodie or something.*

Speaking of the PC brigade.. I'm not entirely sure we'd be able to get a Nazi warplane past them either.

Regardless of the obvious connotations of using such a plane.. it was the most feared plane of the Luftwaffe and I still love it regardless of which side was flying it.

This one is quite good just visually speaking.. not as a potential replacement of anything though.

The mushroom cloud one kind of made me think of this season.. maybe some crossed crutches would have finished it off nicely.

I like the one IsDonIsGood quoted. It is visually appealing. Maybe could be used for a poster or members booklet or something. Tho i do like the idea, if you're gonna have a badge, make it fearsome, or 'inspiring'....some bad-ass plane leaving flames of destruction in its wake.

Okay, just to clear things up here, I didn't mean changing the name 'Bombers'. I meant changing the design of the logo/crest/badge - whatever you want to call it. I've never liked this design:

We should go back to that caricature Bomber, with the little sneer, I loved that logo, I even got a Tatt of it, the current one is s**t.
