Nominate one rule change that would make football more attractive to watch

Any player with a shitty hillbilly beard or full sleeve tattoos who touch the ball automatically give away a 50 meter penalty to the opposition.

25 meter penalty needs to be introduced. Some infractions don't deserve 50 meters.

Agree with reducing the 50m penalty to 25m, its one of my "hobby-horses" actually. The things they hand out 50m for nowadays is farcical and the penalty is just too harsh.

Get rid of all rules that involve the word "deliberately" :
- kicking or handballing the ball out of bounds (still a penalty for kicking out on the full though), so bloody what, just throw it in, besides, it's so poorly umpired you never know what the rule interpretation is
- rushing a behind, again, so bloody what, it happened once in a match and they over-reacted

Players can only kick in once the goal-umpire has finished waving their flag for a point, it's an old rule but it worked so much better then.

18 players in a team with two substitutes, no more are needed, its survival of the fittest for everyone.

A ruckman should be able to take the ball out of the air at a throw-in or ball-up with no penalty, why they do that now is a joke.

Get rid of the centre circle line and that god awful extra circle, let ruckmen run in from as far away and whatever angle they like, bring back the art of tapwork and body positioning.

When a player gets tackled and taken to ground, if his team-mate is the third person in the pile, then penalise them for locking it in, its become an ugly tactic that teams use to reduce the chances of their player being pinged for holding the ball.

Get rid of that woeful sliding in rule which makes players not want to go in and get the aggot as they get pinged for trying to win possession when the ball is on the ground.

Also, umpires should encourage players to go hard to win possession by protecting them for doing so, right now we have players hanging out like seagulls because they are too scared of an infringement which has taken away the whole combative nature of the game.

Pay a holding the ball when a genuine tackle has been laid, not a flimsy hitting of the arms which forces the player to lose control of it, FFS, its turned into a goddam game of tag because of that crap interpretation.

If you duck your head, you do not get a free kick regardless of the circumstances, stop that rubbish about shrugging the shoulders and getting a soft kick awarded.

If a player, whilst taking a set shot or a free kick, runs off his line then it is play-on and the player can be tackled from behind.

If a player is taking a kick outside the boundary and he runs or steps off his line or turns around and kicks backwards, its called play-on and the boundary umpire signals out of bounds and throws it in.

Remove the advantage rule, there is just too much of an advantage plus the penalty for tackling the player trying to take an advantage is a 50m penalty which is too harsh.

All players who are taking a set-shot at goal must be put on the angle according to where they marked it instead of this crap about putting them in the square right in front.

Playing time for a quarter put back to 25 minutes plus time-on instead of the current 20 minutes plus time-on.

Simplify holding the ball interpretation. Play has ball for x amount of time caught holding the ball.

And incorrect disposal IDGAF if a player has the ball for 0.046425 secs and gets tackled if he drops it ping them.

Loosen hands in the back and allow marking and strength contests again.

And lastly ditch the sub 4 on the interchange and have one injury sub so teams aren't impeded keep the rotation cap.

Have all 6 forwards start inside their own forward 50m and all 6 defenders start inside their own defensive 50m. This would help stop flooding and winding down the clock.

  1. Install Countdown timer.
  2. Reduce the match to 18 minute halves.
  3. From 1 minute each side has one player. After 1 minute has elapsed another player from the bench is added and then another and so forth until all 18 are on.
  4. After half time each side must send a player to the bench after 1 minute has elapsed and then another and so forth until it is 1 v 1 in the final minute.

Games would be thrilling, uncongested and close.

Hobby horse, eh?

Allow tackling from behind so that it can't be called "push in the back". There would be a few champions of the game who would struggle to get a touch.

sliding interchange rule. Put water-slides starting 20m in from the boundary. In order to come off the ground, the player must dive on their stomachs on the slide at full speed and slide the full 20meters and through the interchange gate. If they do not slide far enough, they are not allowed off the ground, and must try again until they succeed.

On the rushed behind rule, it was bought in because of Joel Bowden incident right? Haha.

I remember being at that match, I was right behind the goals. Essendon vs Richmond if IIRC. Soaked up time and must of rushed 6 or so behinds and taken up a couple of minutes, was very funny viewing.

However I like the rushed behind rule, keeps the ball in play and a lot more pressure builds on the player which is great to watch.

Yes, it was Joel Bowden but as usual, the AFL overreacts to one incident and creates a nonsensical rule to combat it.

It doesn't build any pressure because they can feign it before crossing the line and avoid the penalty.

One incident? Pretty much decided a flag.

I think it needed to come in... they had to judge it harshly to start off with just to get players out of the habit of it of looking for it, and now they've probably found more of a balance - where defenders usually try to avoid it (some more than others) but do have some leeway if under actual pressure.
---

As for rule changes:
-Get rid of push in the back when it starts as a good tackle only for the player underneath to fall flat... I'm not sure of the purpose of this rule.

-Get rid of runners. Either limit them to only being allowed to come out after a goal - with one quick message then have to rush straight off, or get rid of them entirely. In a high-rotation environment, you can just send messages with the player coming on (like all other sports do)... and all having runners out there is open it up to being exploited by the Nick Davis-types who intentionally take up defensive space.
