We will need to agree to disagree here Matchu I have a great deal of respect for you and your ideals. No if's no buts no maybes, I just see it differently.
No worries. You're probably well aware of the fact that I enjoy debates, as long as they are respectful. I try to stay respectful but I'm not obnoxious enough to keep going when I know I'm wrong. I'll concede if I'm wrong. You're completely entitled to your views so don't feel like you can't respond to anything I've said.

I don't know that there is any "wrong" in politics, there are many different views and lines of thinking, its one of the things that make this country great. I don't want to bore people with politics on a football forum, happy to debate it further via PM if you like

I didn't necessarily use the word wrong to exclusively describe views on politics but rather views on anything. Fair call about not boring people with talk of politics. Back on topic, I'd really like to know what the plans actually are for Metricon and its surroundings. Surely the club can't be training out of tin sheds for too much longer...

Agree, if the state government wont pay for the entire development then the AFL should kick in, I understand they did for the Giants spanking new training facility.

Do you think the AFL would though? My understanding is that the AFL knew how desperately the Giants needed a new facility in an attempt to give new recruits less reasons to leave. There are quite a few perks to living and playing footy on the Gold Coast compared to western Sydney...

darkwingduck, I mentioned this in another thread last year and you seemed semi-interested so I thought you might be interested in an update. The trams on the Gold Coast will extend the testing faze into the final stage (Surfers Paradise to Broadbeach) later this month and will be open to the public on 1 June. May not be directly linked to the thread topic but will definitely be used by interstate fans when travelling to a game at Metricon. The Broadbeach North stop is located around 200 metres from the shuttle to Metricon if anyone is wondering.

You may also notice what looks like advertisements on the tram already. They are actually safety notices to the public but I have no doubt they will become advertisements in the future. Given the fact that Suns advertisements can be found at almost every bus stop along the major roads of the Gold Coast, I think you'll find it's only a matter of time before Gary Ablett head ends up on one of the trams. Best case scenario is a Suns version of this:

In a smaller market I think the players have to feel that their best chance of ongoing success is with us or they will look elsewhere at the Big clubs. Having state of the art facilities would have to be part of culture breeding ongoing success.

Basically I don't think the AFL can afford us to fail so parting with a few bucks now rather than propping up the team indefinitely has to be the starter move, especially with the Movement wearing the majority of the cost through Comm games commitments

Would you consider west Sydney a big market? We all know the potential of that area but I have no doubt in my mind that there are considerably more AFL fans on the GC than there are in west Sydney, despite the Gold Coast having a quarter of its population.

I think the plan was always to use the Comm Games funding to build the training and admin facilities and I presume the AFL will only intervene if they have to. I totally get what you are saying but I'm just not sure it is high on the AFL's agenda at the moment.

Another milestone for the trams on the Gold Coast as they enter the heart of Surfers Paradise. Again, might not be directly linked to the Metricon redevelopment but is definitely going to be used to get patrons to the stadium. Check it out:

Another pretty big milestone today as the trams reach Broadbeach.

As you can see the in the picture, the trams have reached Broadbeach. You can see Jupiters casino on the left and the Gold Coast Convention & Exhibition Centre on the right. This particular photo is significant as it shows the tram slightly ahead of the Broadbeach North station. Why is Broadbeach North station significant? It is the station that patrons will get out at in order to get on the shuttle to Metricon Stadium. The shuttle area is located about 200 metres from the Broadbeach North station. Currently there is no shuttle bus to Metricon from Surfers Paradise so it will definitely be used by people trying to get to the game. But, there is a shuttle to Surfers Paradise from Metricon so the tram is pretty unlikely to be used by footy goers after a game in case they want to spend some time at the casino before they go back to Surfers Paradise.

Matchu - do you have any news regarding the upgrade of facilities at the club. more so speaking about the demountable buildings.. when will they be replaced by more solid foundations?

My understanding is that the new Carrara Sports and Leisure Centre will be transformed into the club's training facilities post-Commonwealth Games. HOWEVER, I did notice on the Channel 7 pre-game coverage that a new building had popped up just north of Metricon Stadium at the river end. Did anyone else see that? I've got a feeling that may actually be the building that will be used for the Comm Games and eventually turned into the club's first class training and admin facility.

If we could just get a screenshot from the Channel 7 pre-game coverage when they were facing the river end, I could show you what I'm talking about.

no i didn't see that...wasn't there word of knocking down the indoor sports centre next to the stadium and turning that into something that the suns will eventually inherit?

There was but more recent reports I have read suggest that the indoor stadium will stay and be upgraded. Official plans aren't even finalised so who knows...

I found this on what looked like an official plan from the Commonwealth Games Federation. Two interesting things to note. The big screen up the river end will be moved to the open section on the eastern side and a second screen will be installed on the south-west end. Hopefully they plan on keeping two screens after the Comm games. It also appears that more seats will be installed on the northern most part of the broadcast area in the top tier. My guess would be that they are planning on removing 'The Deck' and replacing it with a stand to fit more people in the stadium.

kool, id like to think the new big screen would stay too.. hopefully we'll find out more on the new admin/training facilities through out the year..I'm almost 100% sure that something was announced ages ago... like a couple of years back, but i can't for the life of me find the news paper articles on it. the training centre had a pool and everything a well organised club could ask for.

I'd really like to see that article if you ever find it. Not sure if the big screen will be able to fit in those areas so perhaps two smaller screens is the idea.

yea the only thing i can find now, just having a quick google is that the AFL will pledge funding but what ever happens it'll be incorporated with what ever happenes for the 2018 games.. so still awhile off really.Andrew Demetriou retiring at the end of the year, lets hope his replacement is willing to help up like demetriou was.http://www.couriermail.com.au/sport/afl/suns-to-get-afl-leg-up/story-fn6z3p5k-1226341169876
I see. I guess the biggest stumbling block at the moment is the tight budget the state gov is running on at the moment. The new facilities built for GWS was a joint venture between the AFL and the governments at the state and federal levels. I've suggested this before but the next state election may have some long term effects on the Suns facilities.

Such a pity that the temporary seating (on the left above) will be removed post the games, If they built it correctly you could easily see the admin and training facility's built in under it, river views for Travis Aulds office as well. Seems such a waste not to make the most of the opportunity.

The plans I have seen look kinda opposite to this, which is interesting. Where S2 is at the River end, remains the scoreboard and a gap, with NFL style winged stands on either side of it.

It really does seem like such a waste to build it only to knock it down again. I think if you took a third of the grandstand off and brought it forward to where the lower tier is located at the moment, then you could could extend the roof all the way around the stadium and it would fit 35,000 people. As you pointed out, you could also put something underneath the grandstand as well.

You should post the plans you have seen too. No official documentation has been released to the best of my knowledge so what you saw may very well be what is going to happen.

If they're putting up temporary seating then it's just that, temporary seating. If the illustration on the front is anything to go by then it wont even have a roof. Not a place many people would enjoy sitting in that during a hot and sunny day game. If they want a permanent upgrade then they should do it right, extending the roof all the way around to make it look like a part of the ground and not a cheap add on, but that of course costs more money.

Yea no dates . I did find an artist impressions of the stadium and it must be said that the demountable building are gone and in it's place is a warmup track for athletics
