Toast Pick 28 - Fraser McInnes

Center half forward that rotates further up the ground, providing a target out of defense. This then allows Kennedy to play the more traditional full forward position and receive more ball inside the fifty. With his extra height he will surely demand the second best defender, which will free up Darling back to the third tall defender.

Think that will work pretty well.
When we had lynch, jk and darking and one of either lynch or darling would get 3rd tall was lethal

Better still when nn or cox went forward and they were both off the hook

Good to see Frase doing the sensible thing and preparing for life after footy. Didn't realise he was a kiwi though!

I saw this a few days ago, was going to post into the Beer Thread but then cbf.
It took me a while to build up the motivation to do it, tbh. Procrastination at work, hell of a drug

One wonders if he'd stayed as a forward for his development, in a non-aligned WAFL side focused on winning, with a more powerful midfield and lacking the chaos of constant changes and role requirements, would he have matured differently and understood how to play as a genuine KPF?

Nobody is to blame as that's the way the cards fell, and we needed a ruck utility at times (even though we'd gone after Giles and Petrie as stop-gaps)...

Is Big Frase a victim of circumstance?

No. He was a permanent forward for 3 senior WAFL years (60 games) before it was obvious he wasn't AFL quality (it was obvious well before then). We then tried him in alternate positions to try and salvage some worth.

This is an over-simplification, and to suggest that he never had promise as a key tall is false. Since being drafted, competing with Darling, Kennedy, Lynch and a resting ruck of Cox/Nic/Sinkers/Slyce, there's been ONE good stretch of games where a key forward spot was available for him (we'll come to that) before being turned into a pseudo-ruckman in 2015.

20 goals in his first 2 seasons at Perth (who finished 8th and 6th, respectively) followed by 30 goals and 120 marks at East Perth in 2014, the first year of alignment. At 21, this is damn young for a KPF. We saw a few bags of 3 and 4, with strong hands a feature.

Seems like an OK trajectory. In 2015 he was shifted into the ruck mid-season, and it hurt his numbers. East's midfield desperately needed a competitive, big body. Lycett was also injured. The Sinclair pickup once again removed the possibility of him finding a place in the senior-22, in a ruck role. Then there was Giles...

But wait a second, in 2015 Frase played 7 full games at AFL as a forward and was s**t; that's why he became a ruck!!!11!11! Nah. He wasn't terrible. We have short memories.

Darling was injured for the first 10 games of the year, so Frase debuted rd 4. 8 marks, 15 touches and 1.1 was followed by solid performances against St. Kilda, Gold Coast and Geelong. Kicked 2.0 in a literal cyclone in Tassie against North, but was the obvious straight swap for a returning Darling the next week. At the time, we were lauding our depth in quality talls and McInnes was still seen as having good potential. However, he was shifted into that ruck role at WAFL by necessity, and his forward development stagnated.

Look, I'm not saying he was ever going to be a star, and he's not the quickest, but the tools were there for him to develop into a consistent tall forward. As of the back half of 2015 he was cast as a depth player. He actually played a decent game against Geelong in 2017 IIRC as a ruck, but is back in the forward-line again this year despite not having played as a genuine KPF at any level for 3 years.

The kid has been stuffed around to an extent, by circumstance.

It’s taken a ,omg time to realise he’s not a gun player.....at 27-28hes not going to get better

Delist now ....and give brander and Allen a go

We have to find out younger if a guy can play not discover it at 28 ...

He’s probabaly a great bloke and popular I’m sure but this is cut throat industry ...if your not elite or have the ability to be elite then you’re taking the spot of someone who could be
