Welcome to mine own creation, the creation of a new award, designed by me and bestowed upon whomever I believe to be the best rookie of the season.

I have created a complex spreadsheet of formulae designed to pinpoint the best performing rookie on a rolling basis each round.

To catch up the first five rounds, I will post the winner of each of the first three weekly awards today, the Cherry Poppers, and the following three next week. One winner of the weekly Cherry Poppers will at the end of the season be awarded the Virgin Cup, the seasons best rookie as decided by me.

I understand we already have the prestigious EKA Medal, and that is ranked partially on the players stats, but mainly on the players posting. This award recognises greatness on field only, though I will comment on the posting of the player during their Cherry Popping match thread.

This Is Anfield came out swinging against the Dragons in round one, throwing around cliches and innuendo like an "old" pro. Clearly held his own against the quality of The Filth Wizard and the quantity of boncer34 with some well rounded questions, statements and responses.

TIA began the game on the wing, opposed to akkaps. His first SFA possession came within seconds of the opening bounce, his second a goal assist to his captain, tigland. Not a bad way to start his SFA career.

Involved in a few tight scuffles with Moo during the first, TIA ended a blinding quarter with two kicks, eight handballs and two marks. Another seven possessions, including five kicks, in the second and TIA was heading for the change rooms with his team 37 points ahead, in no small part due to TIA's dominance on the wing.

Highlights:

1 : 2.4 {lHBF} - raskolnikov looks downfield.
1 : 2.44 {lW} - He handpasses to This is Anfield.
1 : 2.48 {lW} - A quick handpass to tigland.
1 : 2.52 {lW} - tigland has a ping.
1 : 2.57 {lW} - What a statement by tigland.

1 : 19.3 {CHB} - Gibbsy has possession.
1 : 19.34 {rW} - A kick towards Moo territory.
1 : 19.38 {rW} - Big mark by This is Anfield!.

2 : 12.3 {rW} - Gibbsy has it. What can he do with it?.
2 : 12.36 {rW} - This is Anfield makes Gibbsy's merry go around.
2 : 12.38 {lW} - This is Anfield with the ball now.
2 : 12.41 {lHFF} - No-look handpass to EagleOz.

A much less impacting third quarter, due to Gibbsy's steadying influence, included four handballs and a kick, but the impact had started to leave TIA's game. Not to worry though as the margin was still 27 points at the final break. Five final quarter handballs, and TIA's Furies had beaten the Dragons by 32 points.

Highlights:

3 : 4.25 {rW} - Bursts through Gibbsy's hands.
3 : 4.3 {lW} - This is Anfield has a paddock.
3 : 4.34 {C} - londontiger runs past and takes the handpass.
3 : 4.37 {lW} - Gives the ball to This is Anfield.
3 : 4.41 {lW} - This is Anfield dummy's the handpass and then takes a bounce.
3 : 4.46 {lHFF} - Gibbsy gives up the chase as This is Anfield bounces again.
3 : 4.5 {lHFF} - Passes to EagleOz by hand.
3 : 4.54 {lHFF} - EagleOz has a shot from fifty.
3 : 4.58 {lHFF} - Sails through the big sticks for number 1.

3 : 22.53 {lW} - This is Anfield sizes the options in front of him.
3 : 23 {lW} - This is Anfield is corralled by Gibbsy but spins free and takes a bounce.
3 : 23.02 {lHFF} - Flicks it to rfctigerarmy.

TIA finished as one of the Furies best players with 17 handballs in 29 possessions, 5 marks and three tackles.

It's worth noting that the nominations each week are on a rolling basis. It's unlikely one quality week will get you the nod unless you are already in line for one. Patience is king Joe

Ant Bear had a quiet round 2 match thread against the Royals, in fact only appearing once to introduce his partner;



In the first quarter, AB was opposed to bomberlegend2007 on the wing, and made early inroads to beating his opponent, both picking up an early disposal followed by this contest:

1 : 1.55 {lW} - His kick is towards bomberlegend2007.
1 : 1.59 {lW} - Poor effort from bomberlegend2007 and Ant Bear takes the mark.
1 : 2.05 {rW} - Nobody's checking Ant Bear.
1 : 2.09 {rW} - Heavy knock behind play and it looks like someone's coming off.
1 : 2.25 {rW} - Ant Bear streaming down the ground.
1 : 2.3 {C} - He transfers play using Power Raid.

which kicked off a battle of "epic" proportions, marginally won by AB.

In an epic battle, it could be argued that Ant Bear had the better game against bomberlegend2007 - although there was very little in it. - 98m from 0 to 98.

In an otherwise standout game, AB must've forgotten his umpire bribe money, and was dealt with harshly from the get-go.

1 : 4.15 {rW} - Ant Bear takes them on.
1 : 4.19 {rW} - I think he's legged his opponent though.

A wayward kick at goal didn't help the 'Rats chances early.

1 : 14.51 {rW} - Gets a handpass away to Ant Bear.
1 : 14.55 {rW} - Awkward bounce but he regains control.
1 : 15.01 {rW} - Ant Bear has wild shot at goal.
1 : 15.06 {rW} - Ant Bear wants a goal! Or maybe a behind. Great behind!.

Another free against sent the Royals forward to take the lead in the second quarter.

2 : 20.31 {rW} - Ant Bear fighting to get a clear kick.
2 : 20.37 {rW} - Great tackle - he's lost it.
2 : 20.42 {lW} - bomberlegend2007 signals for his teammates to present.

Another free and the game is on the line for the 'Rats, now 27 points behind.

3 : 20.02 {rW} - Ant Bear signals for his teammates to present.
3 : 20.08 {rW} - bomberlegend2007 was shoved in the back and will pick up the free.
3 : 20.13 {lW} - bomberlegend2007 looking for a lead.

A quality goal in the last gave his team some hope.

4 : 12.21 {rW} - Ant Bear trying to offer a lead.
4 : 12.25 {rW} - No-one can take the mark.
4 : 12.31 {rW} - Ant Bear has a paddock.
4 : 12.36 {rW} - Ant Bear dummy's the handpass and then takes a bounce.
4 : 12.41 {rW} - That's gonna go mighty close!.
4 : 12.46 {rW} - Ant Bear splits the sticks.

Setting up a goal for his vice captain MoOP, AB did his best for his team, and helped bring the lead back to 28 points, which had blown out to 42 at one stage. AB ranked second best on ground for his efforts, 24 disposals, 6 marks and 3 tackles spoilt only by his 5 frees against.

Congratulations AB on your Cherry Popping performance.
