Wait im confused. When your ousted as leader you can just say "nah sorry im not going anywhere" and you get to keep your job?

The constitutional convention is for the defeated Prime Minister/Premier/Chief Minister to formally resign so the Governor-General/Governor/Administrator can call on the new leader-designate and commission them. I believe this is how it formally works when governments change after elections too.
It dates back to Britain's parliamentary system Australia's were modeled on.
