Thing was no one was doing better. Now we have to address it now he's gone. Low bar but he made the most scores over 20 for the Australians. Admittedly not saying much. Starts but didn't go on. A couple of half centuries and a number of scores in the 30s. Didn't not cost us winning the Series though, that's obvious. Which of the other openers would have done so much better that we won the series?

Not that he did well there but actually made a 50 every 4th innings on average in England. The stinker in 2019 skewed it alot. 2015 averaged 46.
Performed worse than all the other top order batsman. Might be a bit much to blame one player for costing the series win but he should have been dropped on form

Seen the history of all going at once? It's been a disaster. Took us years after losing Lillee, Chappell and Marsh all at once. Has to be gradual.
And was bad when we lost McGarth and Warne as well

What is it that has triggered you so much? Serious question. Yes there was sandpaper gate but other than that he was just a tough competitor trying his best for his team
I've never liked him. Always thought he was an arrogant flog and a flat track bully, and couldn't be happier to see the back of him.

Yeah the thing concerning about that move is if he is going to bat 4 the expectations change, he needs to make more runs. Will probably have his bowling suffer a little if that is the case. I am not dead against it but a lot of people are just assuming he is going to nail that spot if it is awarded to him.
Just hasnt shown enough at test level yet to be a serious no 4.

Look I like to bag Davey as well and his away record is quite average but it just goes to show you how good the state of cricket in this country is and has been over the decades that a bloke with his record has been so polarising when in most countries he’d go down as one of their greats. I think we’ll miss him alot when the merry go around of openers starts (even more so when uzzi goes in a year or so).

Still made 2 x 60s plus a few 30s. Fact is, while not great, it was still better than Harris etc would have done. Sad, but true. There was still a number of 50+ opening stands. Best we can say he took the shine off the new ball and gave the opening stand a start at least.

The fact we had no-one who could have done better was the sad part. Unlike 2019, the no.3 had at least something to build on.

You have to take it in context though, the replacements of Renshaw, Harris and Bancroft will probably be lucky to average 35 for there career.

Australia doesnt know how to use or manage all rounders. Reminds me of having Watson opening the batting which damaged his career IMO. Marsh at 6 is where you want an all rounder

You know what they say about history. Those who don't take note of history are doomed to repeat it.
We had the talent to cover their loss, it was the peeling off of another fifteen players to go to South Africa that was the real kicker.

They also try and make people into all rounders that would be better suited being a specialist batsmen eg. Steve Smith and Cam Green.

On green he’s made most of his runs higher up the order for WA. An ideal 6 role is what the Bison is doing atm (even Mitch struggled at times) but Green is someone that needs likes to soak up a few and then go on to cultivate an innings. At 4 he is able to do so. That said I think 4 is the longer term picture for Green and I don’t think we should move Smith up the order just yet. Bring in an opener to replace warner and maybe have the discussion of smith moving up the order when uzzi calls it quits.

I think Green needs cricket under his belt especially red ball cricket and I think short term they should could get by with him missing the white ball stuff that coincide with shield games. We got Marsh in the set up as well as Hardie and Sutherland making their case.

One thing about Warner we'll definitely miss is his fielding. In the post match discussion, Wasim Akram described him as the world's best fieldsman, and one might suggest that without some of his efforts in the field during the World Cup, we may not have won it.

Green would be better suited playing BBL if his going to play no part in the Tests, Swepson spent 18 months being a drinks man, its a joke.

Agree in the older lads but wouldn’t be surprised if Renshaw does well. He’s just entered his prime as a cricketer a year or two ago and there’s plenty of room to improve

Only reason I don't want Smith there is that he is 35 in June. Remember too that Ussie is 38 next series. We need to look forward there.
I’d love to look forward but not sure Bancroft & Harris are the answer so who else is there with a future?

Id look to Smith now, tell Renshaw this is his opportunity to have a massive season and aim for Ussies spot, there’s a couple of half decent younger types like Hunt, Street, Ward etc getting around but they’re not ready. But they might be in 2 years when Smitty is done.

So whilst I agree in a perfect world yeah we’d turn to someone with some time up his sleeve but Bancroft and Harris are just stop gaps anyway, so IMO if we’re looking to a stopgap, go the one who also gets Green into the top order - ie Smith

As a scorchers fan i would love that but he made the stupid choice of pulling out of the BBL this season, which also hurt the scorchers
