Seems that the yellow cards a few of the Uruguayans got in the South American qualifiers will mean they miss the first leg!
The Socceroos have been handed an unexpected bonus ahead of next month's World Cup play-offs, with the world governing body, FIFA, last night confirming three Uruguayan players will be suspended for the first leg in Montevideo.

Key defender Diego Lugano and midfielders Gustavo Varela and Omar Pouso were among the five Uruguayans to pick up yellow cards in the final qualifying match against Argentina early this month, and those cards have added up to one-game bans.

A FIFA spokesman confirmed the suspensions last night, telling the Herald: "The FIFA disciplinary code is activated and in these cases the cards will carry over."

Eight years too late.

FIFA wiped Iran's slate clean prior to our playoff with them meaning that the hitherto suspended Ali Daei, Karim Bagheri and Mahmoud Khakpour (that centrehalf who didn't look a day over 60) were free to play against us in Tehran.

FIFA's consistency. Don't you love it?

Varela is a very good player, too, so not sad to see the back of him for the first leg.
Don't think it makes a whole lot of difference. We only have to be better defensively against Uruguay in Montevideo, our front formation, you would think, would score against their defence at some stage anyway.Providing we can get a drawn result in Uruguay,or in the very least 0-1,we will be in Germany next year.

Tim Vickery's TWG column makes good reading - he says Lugano will be the one they miss most, he's Montero's regular defensive partner.

Fossati would prefer to partner him with Diego Lugano, a big, strong no nonsense stopper who has formed an excellent partnership with Montero this year. Lugano would be expected to take Mark Viduka. But he is suspended for the first leg – the downside of playing so many games is that there is the risk of suspensions as the campaign comes to a climax.

Uruguay will be without three players in Montevideo. Midfield brawler Omar Pouso should not be missed, right sided flyer Gustavo Varela can be replaced. Lugano is the big loss.

Diego Lopez would seem the obvious replacement. But Charlton Athletic’s Gonzalo Sorondo could come in to consideration, and another Diego, Godin, will have a chance to impress next week when Uruguay play a largely meaningless friendly away to Mexico.

Fossati admits that it is mainly a money raising exercise, as well as a chance to build for the long term by having a look at some new players. It is unlikely, but Godin could derive short-term benefit. He did well at Under-20 level earlier this year and was part of the squad for the recent World Cup qualifiers. At least he has an opportunity to stake a claim for Lugano’s place.

Whoever comes in, it seems most likely that Fossati will want a stopper to take care of Viduka and leave Montero to cover. So a back three seems likely. More probable is that full backs Carlos Diogo and Dario Rodriguez will be expected to push up. There could be space on offer behind them – especially Diogo, who attacks better than he defends.
