Valuable experience for our Academy players. Only had 1 player (Tom Logan) that has played AFL.

Great to see Ken Hinkley, Shaun Hart, Michael Wilson and Josh Carr there.

We had smaller bodies and were short a couple of talls at each end. We also gave away too many unnecessary free kicks. Was disappointing to not score a goal in the first half.
Norwood with experienced players were able to out-muscle our players and also they managed to keep the ball locked in the outer wing, Just like the Grand Final last year.

Summo was sharp when kicking, But had a bad day defensively (apart from 1 good spoil late in the game).
Tom Gray and Yoey Wagner are smooth movers when on song but they didn't have enough impact on the game.
Mitch Harvey spent most of his time forward and in the ruck with a stint down back. Put some muscle on and looked like a bit of a leader. I think he will improve a lot this year.
Sam Russell was solid out of the back pocket.
Byrne-Jones was ok off half back.
Sharrad looks bigger but didn't have much impact.
Dougal Howard spent most of his time between fwd/defense, with a stint in the ruck. 1st year player will need to improve fitness.
Reynolds was ok, spent a bit of time in the fwd pocket/flank.
Sawford was decent in patches.
Tom Logan was tough as always, Took a great mark inside 50.
Jon Ross spent most of the time in the ruck, Really needs to build some muscle if he is going to compete against guys like Baulderstone.
Gordon kicked a nice goal on the boundary.
Jesse Palmer is pretty quick and is a good kick but needs to do more.
Luke Wilson is back at the club from his stint at Norwood, Good handpasses but fumbled too much.

What was the rationale behind cancelling the academy game at the last minute?
Apparently the SANFL didn't tell the AFL there was an Academy game and the AFL only just found out about it. They cancelled it because they want to keep the turf in good condition.

It was going to be abandoned completely but Port managed to negotiate that the match happens at Alberton tomorrow.

When you consider that our SANFL team in the year proper will have these players available for selection then a 63-point loss to Norwood at Norwood doesn't look as bad as it first does.

Kane Mitchell, John Butcher, Paul Stewart, Karl Amon, Tom Clurey, Brendon Ah Chee, Sam Gray, Nathan Krakouer, Aaron Young, Jarman Impey, Andrew Moore. Some of these may play mostly in the AFL but all could be possibilities to be on our SANFL list at any one time.

Lol the SANFL.

The panic and carry-on over on Facespace is borderline mental.

Harvey looks a lot bigger across the chest and shoulders, its time we stopped the bs and played him as a stand alone full forward.

the only real issue i have going forward is key position defenders. apart from clurey, who might get a call up if trengove doesnt come up, im not sure who we have to play at chb or fb.

It's all about tank and ground coverage with an eye to AFL readiness, isn't it?

The days of having a young/backup KPF playing as a stay at home forward at the lower level - inevitably resulting in cheap bags that ultimately teaches them nothing about how to play at the highest level - are gone. Which sucks for the purist who'd like to see the Magpies given the best possible chance of winning, but hey.

i think he is the one to replace schultz, needs to develop his game purely as a forward, not necessarily a stay at home forward, but playing the same role in the sanfl that he would play in the afl, a similar role that schultzy plays in the afl now. im coming from whats best for his development as a player. running around struggling to touch the ball playing out of position isnt whats best for his football development. fitness maybe yes, but he will be fit enough to play the role he needs to play in the afl.

Went along for a while. Chatted to a few people. Lacklustre nonsense on the field, never even the faint sense of a competitive effort from our guys.

The effort was there for the most part of the game but the skills were not sanfl level and the bodies were mainly young. By design the vast majority of these blokes will never play league football at any club.

i thought in the second half we went more one on one over the ground and made it a contest at least. early in the game our forward setup was abysmal, even when we won the clearance norwood had 2, 3 loose across half back and through the midfield and controlled the game, hence the game was played in their forward line and we were never going to score with that set up. once we didnt allow them the loose players the contest evened up a little.

I agree ... we seam 1 KPD short

(as 3 each for both teams seams a good mix)

we have for the Power - Trengove, Carlile and Hombsch
for the magpies we have - Clurey and Austin (and a 3rd here would have been good)

although maybe we can get one in the top ups over the next couple of weeks

we should have got an extra KPD in last years draft but seeing we didn't then we will need to get one in this years draft (as a priority)

our needs at this years draft (2015) is a KPD - 195cm + and another developing ruckman - 200cm +
