Would like to do the North Ballarat Test Pattern jumper, but the pictures I have of it ain't the clear for such a unusual design. The are also plenty of jumpers missing from the clubs. The story of how you created your site of AFL jumpers would be what would have to be done to do a VFA/L uniform site, probably worse because of the not as big coverage of the VFA/L and the reduced market for such a site. Were your site interests many people due to the fact that nearly all the clubs survive today, the majority of VFA/L clubs are no longer in the league or have merged once or twice with other clubs. In short, the history of many of these VFA clubs has been lost.

The Dandenong Football Club left the VFA in 1991, but was said to come back in or was replaced by the Dandenong Redlegs. That club doesn't exist anymore and the name Dandenong Redlegs has been given to another Dandenong club so the name is carried on. Alot of the history of the Dandenong Football Club would have been lost in this time even if it wasn't suppose to. How many other VFA clubs are like this? Plenty probably, and would leave many gaps in the uniforms.
That's exactly the problem.
And when I considered researching it for VFL/SANFL/WAFL clubs that was the problem with it.
So I decided on why start if you're probably never going to finish.
Or worse, do half the job and get it wrong.
Of course, it would be great to have the VFA club historys, but I think it's going to be a massive reseach project, even bigger and more difficult than the VFL/AFL jumpers I did with a lot of help from others.
Don't get me wrong, this is an excellent start. But you're basically where I was in 1996 when I started. These are the ones you remember or have heard about.
I finished all the clubs in 2004. And only then because a mate of mine Dave went through every footy record from 1970 to 1990 and picked out every single little change and I then did the graphics. There were days in at the State Library, there were visits to club museums, and plenty of visits to MSB when it was in elizabeth St, and then when it moved to Flinders St.
This could be your mission, should you choose to accept it. If you do, I could put you in contact with people like Marc Fiddian, who might know where to get his hands on information, but the reseach will be a big undertaking.

What is msb? Did the vfa have a head office? If yes i knlw they could have lots of info but it is a masive project. I think what you have done is amazing & it more than enough for people to understand what they wore & in what era

Melbourne Sports Books.

At one point they had a copy of just about every footy book written.

VFA did have an office opposite the MCG years ago.
Don't know where they are now, probably somewhere at Jihad.

Ah yep santo's bookshop . Been in his shop a few times. I have a book his has written called football grounds of melbourne has all the old vfa & vfa teams in it. Has a few pics of vfa jumpers but are black and white.

Wizard waffle you have made a great start, one that no one before has really done in view. I respect mero's comments. I value what you have done and it does not have to be perfect, in fact for each jumper you can nominate the source of the info so you are covered. When the new Footypedia Full Points Footy site comes on line, i think it's going to be called Australian football, Maybe the VFA/VFL jumpers can have a home there? They are looking for contributors.

Here's a Dandenong player on the VFA reecorder showing a good full club strip. I even have the old Dandies logo.

There are plenty of sources out there. MSB used to have abooks on club history of Port Melb and Brunswick. You can get the Caulfield, Coburg, Preston ones easy enough via the net. Fiddian has written one on Essendon Town called 'the Other Essendon'.

George 'VFA' Paras from the vfl forum played for sunshine 2nds and has videos of many vfa games. There is even a few on you tube.

I watched phil satdee. Never knew ej whitten coached willy
Phil would know his jumpers & was around ina era when all the clubs popped up & shut down.

I was walking past there the other day and he had in the window. If I wasn't in a rush I would of stopped by and had a look.

+1 for having these on Full Points Footy. Some of their history's on clubs were pretty sketchy and this would clear a few things up :thumbsu:

Thank you Civilest. I have that Football Recorder somewhere in my collection of Football Records. It is in one of the boxes under the house. Does that Football Recorder have the table of the years that clubs were in the VFA. I would like a copy of that. It would save me looking through all those boxes.

The Box Hill Hawks jumper picture appeared in the Whitehorse Leader two years ago when it became Box Hill's clash jumper. It was said that after two years they would decide which way they will take the club uniform. Traditional Box Hill or Hawthorn. Looks like Hawthorn won.

I can't figure out which club the playeris from in the second picture of the group of ten. I would say they would be from the top left; Sandringham, Don't know, Brunswick, Northcote, Preston. Bottom row: Yarraville, Preston Oakleigh, Prahran and Port Melbourne.

It's Camberwell, and you are correct on the rest.

Re: Springvale
Blue Home / Red Away apparently. can anyone confirm?

Yes I can. Blue is home as that's their traditional colour. Was only in the late 1990s that they changed from the SFC monogram to the Scorpion jumper.

love your work wizardwaffle. Did anyone watch hall of fame? Bob Johnson(Melb and WAFL) got good acknowledgement for his Oakleigh years. There were some B&W shots of the oakleigh monogram with the 'O' with the pointed ends like the Liston winner above. A few yaers ago the AFL would have tried to hide any VFA reference at the HoF. Nice to see the change. Still think VFA stars should be in there like Frosty Miller. Reno Pretto, Fred Cook etc etc.

Sandringham Zebras have had a few different jumpers since joining the VFA in 1929

The colours represented the the three towns/areas that made up the then City of Sandringham,Gold/Yellow (sand on the beach) for Sandringham,Blue for Hampton (the bay) and Black for Black Rock (The black rocks forund there on the bay shore)

The first jumper was Royal Blue with Gold and Black bands around the centre, in the early 1930s it changed similar to the present day striped one and after the second world war they had a jumper with three large stripes on the front and an all Black back same design as the St Kilda VFL one. There was also a version that had stripes back and front.Another had a large monogram of a zebra on the front.

There has always been a dispute if it was Gold or Yellow as some people didnt like the term "yellow' Meaning gutless LOL

Myself I prefer the call it gold.

No, it is a picture from their website.

I'll put the black line on.

It would be a mighty comeback for Yarraville to demerge with Sedden, and then join the AFL.

I took the colour of the eagle to be white as the club colours where Red, Blue and White.

This is why I took the eagle to be white. With those changes I have a Yarraville uniform looking like this:

The nickname of Port Melbourne isn't clearly defined. The current script logo says Boroughs and the old logo and the merchandise page on the Port Melbourne site say Borough.

The name Borough is a reference to the old name of the council area. the Borough of Port Melbourne. I would actually go with Borough as their nickname as their is only one Borough of Port Melbourne. I think the script logo was created by a designer, and took Borough to be a creature, so a group would be stronger, so it became Boroughs.

The nickname is good because it is historical, but isn't good as it lacks the image of a creature or object. The other nickname you have seen used, Burras or Kookaburras would be a good one as it retains the Burra or Borough as a nickname, and gives the club a animal barrack for. Last year the Burras swooped up the premiership, and they laughed all the way.

Great photo of the old VFA days, I am asking is it o.k to have put them up on the Facebook group ?... http://www.facebook.com/pages/VFA-Footy-The-Halcyon-Days/183319391711258 all welcome, cheers Gezza

Guys, this is one of the best threads I've seen in ages. Thank you to everyone involved, especially Wizardwaffle - your work is priceless.

If you took all this info to a site like AustralianFootball.com I wonder if they'd be interested in showcasing it?

It's a shame that the self appointed keepers if the code don't seem to value the VFA story. This stuff needs a museum.
