And this morning we've had the announcement of our squad for the year with the return of a few familiar faces

Looking forward to seeing the return of Denby Taylor after she took a few years away from football - here's hoping it's a successful return

I realise it's an eternity ago in the history of the evolution of women's football. But when she stepped away, Denby was clearly one of the brightest and best we had at the club. Will be very interesting to watch her progress this season.

Geelong has made six changes to its team that will host Box Hill at GMHBA Stadium on Saturday at 2.10pm.

The Cats will be chasing their first win of the season after an opening round defeat to the Blues.

Jamilla Cranny, Bridget Aughton, Zoe Cowan, Zoe Larkins, Olivia Stewart and Jane McMeel come into the side to play their first games of the season.

They replace Abbey McDonald (unavailable), Abby Favell (injury), Lily Jordan (injury), Olivia Cicolini (concussion), Gabbi Featherston (injury) and Kelsea Gray (omitted).

A VFL curtain raiser will take place prior with Geelong hosting Box Hill from 11.05am.

All matches in the 2024 Smithy’s VFL and VFLW seasons will be live streamed free via the AFL website, AFL Live Official App and VFL App.

Noticed the score from Saturday - a 14.14.98 to 0.2.2 loss, on the back of Box Hill thumping Casey by 100+ the week before. They currently sit on the top of the ladder with a percentage of 1300+. I remember reading somewhere that they had at least 10 AFLW players listed in their team on Saturday, while we had 2.

Won't help them much later in the season though when the AFLW players are generally pulled out of the VFLW games so they don't get injured before the AFLW season starts. We learnt that the hard way last year when we were up the pointy end of the ladder with a month to go of the season, only to free-fall down the ladder and miss the finals by percentage.

Guess there's no limit to how many AFLW listed players can play in the VFLW. Sydney played against the Bulldogs on the weekend and fielded 18 AFLW listed players, including Laura Gardiner who racked up a lazy 47 possessions.

Will be a tough ask next week - playing the Swans in Sydney who have basically been playing their AFLW side each week. Wonder whether we'll follow suit and stack our team a bit.

Yeah, interesting point. Considering the AFLW season is pretty short, looks like there's big upside in getting matches into the senior girls (biggest risk would be injury). So far we've resisted the temptation, but if other teams are doing it, why wouldn't we?

Team for this week, and another two debutants have been named.

In other news, the Swans are resting Laura Gardiner this week, but have still named a side full of AFLW listed players for their game against Box Hill.
