Round 20 Fixtures (Father's Day Round/Final Round)

East Perth vs East Fremantle at Leederville Oval (Saturday, 2:10pm)
West Perth vs Subiaco at Pentanet Stadium (Saturday, 2:10pm)
Claremont vs West Coast Eagles at Revo Fitness Stadium (Saturday, 2:10pm)
Perth vs South Fremantle at Mineral Resources Park (Saturday, 2:10pm)
Peel Thunder vs Swan Districts at Lane Group Stadium (Sunday 12:10pm, margin)

Round 20 has arrived and is the last of the home and away rounds before the finals series. This week sees five games, four on Saturday afternoon with an early afternoon game on Sunday.

It's a battle of the "Easts" to start Round 20 with East Perth facing East Fremantle at Leederville Oval in the first of the afternoon matches on Saturday. East Perth put in a pretty gallant effort last week against South Fremantle after having sacked their coach Jeremy Barnard earlier in the week, giving the Bulldogs a big fright with the Dogs needing victory to keep their double chance hopes in the finals alive. The Royals were with the Dogs every step of the way with the scores locked even at quarter time and three quarter time before Souths did enough in the last term (after going a goal down early in the last quarter) to grab the win by nine points in what was a pretty good encounter. East Perth's opponent this week is East Fremantle who took on Claremont last week in what was an important fixture between two top three sides. East Fremantle got the jump early on Claremont with four goals to none in the first term and still had the Tigers goalless at half time to lead by 33 points. Old Easts booted another four goals in the third term and then three in the last while holding the Tigers to only five goals for the day as the Sharks claimed victory by 45 points, propelling them to second on the ladder after overtaking Claremont and moving to within half a game of ladder leader West Perth. Destiny remains in East Fremantle's hands as a win will guarantee them second place and a home qualifying final next week.

Next up has West Perth hosting Subiaco at Pentanet Stadium. West Perth travelled to Steel Blue Oval in Bassendean on the weekend, needing to knock over Swan Districts to guarantee themselves as the minor premiers for 2022. Swans did not make things easy for the Falcons and after trailing by nine points at quarter time, they kicked three goals in the second term to level the scores going into the main break. While Swans were efficient up forward, West Perth butchered several chances, kicking 3.8 in the first half and then 2.3 in the third quarter to lead by eight points at the final break despite both clubs having kicked five goals to that point in the match. Swans, who needed to win to keep their chances of making finals alive, booted 4.2 in the last term while the Falcons' 1.0 wasn't enough as they went down by 12 points. Subiaco hosted Perth in ruckman Lachlan Delahunty's last game for the club in the fixture at Leederville Oval. The Lions controlled the contest all day, keeping the Demons goalless in the opening term and restricting them to just four goals for the match while Subiaco racked up 14.14 (98) to claim a 63 point win, sending Lachlan Delahunty out in style as he kicked the last goal of the game but also helping celebrate Leigh Kitchin's 150th match in the best way possible. A big game looms here for West Perth with a victory enough for them to secure the minor premiership and the all important week off in the first week of the finals.

Claremont take on West Coast Eagles at Revo Fitness Stadium in the third of the afternoon fixtures on Saturday. Claremont had a dirty day at home last week having played host to East Fremantle in Round 19. The Tigers were kept goalless for the entire opening half, kicking just 0.4 while the Sharks eked out 5.7 to hold a handy 33 point lead at the main break. Claremont began the third term well with two quick goals but Old Easts booted the last three goals of the term to snuff out any chance of a comeback and extend their lead to 42 points at three quarter time. Both sides managed two goals in the last term as East Fremantle handed Claremont a 45 point defeat and replaced them in second place on the ladder. West Coast Eagles travelled to Mandurah last week to tackle Peel Thunder, a match which looked promising with the Eagles fielding a side with 14 AFL listed players, the equal most they had had all season. The match proved to be anything but close as Peel kicked five goals to no score in the first term before following up with 4.1 to 0.5 in the second quarter as they held a 51 point lead at half time. That lead extended in the third term with three more goals to the Thunder while the Eagles again went goalless with another five behinds on the board. Another four behinds followed in the last term for the Eagles before they finally managed to kick a goal at almost the 10 minute mark to break a run of 14 consecutive behinds. In the end, the Eagles managed another two goals before losing by 73 points, consigning them to their second straight wooden spoon in the WAFL.

Perth host South Fremantle in the final game on Saturday. Perth locked horns with Subiaco in Round 19 and things didn't go according to plan after having sacked their coach Garry Moss on the Monday last week. The Demons went goalless in the opening term and managed only four for the day in what was a tough afternoon for the Perth side as Subiaco mostly did as they pleased during the afternoon. The Lions finished with 14.14 (98) which could have been more while Perth's 4.11 (35) summed up their day in front of goal in what was a comprehensive 63 point loss. South Fremantle got a scare from East Perth having taken on the Royals on the Sunday at Fremantle Community Bank Oval. East Perth had their own issues during the week but they rallied well to push the Bulldogs all day, spending considerable periods of the match in front. Scores were level at the first and last change as the Bulldogs again fell behind by a goal early in the last. But Souths rallied again with a couple of goals good enough to see them home by eight points and keep themselves in the fight for a qualifying final berth going into the final round this week.

The final game of Round 20 and the final game of the home away season is the match between Peel Thunder and Swan Districts at Lane Group Stadium in Mandurah on early Sunday afternoon. This fixture is also the TV game and therefore our margin match for this week. Both clubs have been locked in the middle part of the ladder for a number of weeks and Peel Thunder saw themselves break into the top five a few weeks ago, the final spot on offer for the 2022 finals series. Both sides won last week, Peel Thunder handed the West Coast Eagles' WAFL side a 73 point loss while Swan Districts upset West Perth by 12 points to keep themselves level on points with the Thunder heading into the final round. Those results last week mean that the winner of this game will take fifth place and the last spot in the 2022 finals series while the loser will finish sixth and miss out on finals this season, making the game an unofficial elimination final. It is all to play for this week for both clubs with high stakes and this game should no doubt be an entertaining affair given what is on the line. The telecast of this game gets underway at 12pm on Channel Seven with bouncedown at 12:10pm with this game preceding an AFLW match also being broadcast on Seven immediately after this game.

There's some movement in the Reserves and Colts this week. The three Reserves' game on Saturday all begin at their usual time of 11:40am while the game on Sunday has a 2:55pm start. In the Colts, Saturday's fixtures begin at 9:10am while Sunday's match has a 9:40am bouncedown.

Aside from some rain on the weekend, the weather of late has been pretty good for the past couple of weeks. Saturday will see that change as the showers return but most of the rain will be in the morning and the early part of the afternoon with a maximum of 19 degrees and 3-6mm of rain forecast. Sunday is looking better with a shower or two and a maximum of 20 degrees. 0-1mm of rain is forecast with a 60% chance of showers and any rain will likely be later in the day with not much expected in any case.

Well it's hard to believe but there is just one round left of the home and away season before finals. The top five hasn't yet been decided with fifth place up for grabs while the top four is far from settled with any of those sides still able to claim the minor premiership. This round promises to be an entertaining one with a lot at stake for a number of sides so it'll be fun to see how it plays out over the weekend. Happy tipping!!

I'll be shocked if the games are played at the usual time with the Freo game on Saturday night. The WAFL would have to be completely and utterly moronic to have any sort of clash with the AFL.

That is true but the GF shouldn't be there anyway. It should be at one of the suburban grounds. The difference between Optus and Freo Oval 2 years ago is night and day.
