Vince in the midfield was a great sight, is it just me or does he looked to have picked up a yard of pace ?? In fact everyone that played through the middle had a good night with very little opposition.

Mackay looked the goods when he was on the field but did tire a tad.

Vince was one of my tips to be the big improver this year. He HAS improved his pace as well as adjusted to the pace of the game, which when added to his plentiful natural skill and talent makes him a pretty good unit in the mid-field.

Mackay is a quality player in the making, with great skills who hates to waste a crumb let alone a disposal. Think Reilly, think VB when you think of Mackay in a couple of years time. Injury has kept him to bugger-all games since U/18 days but watch him grow with every game from now on.

Vince and Mackay - a couple of pretty nice players in the making. :thumbsu:

More than generous? I said he made many clangers, through poor disposal and dropped marks. While he still made a few errors in the second half I thought he improved. There’s no doubt I’m a hypocrite at times, but Campbell’s tackling and willingness to throw his body around was fantastic. When he settles down at this level I believe he’ll be a good contributor. But tell me this macca, why’s he playing in defence? Along with my fellow Redlegs fans I’ve seen him more than anyone on this board, and before today I’ve never seen him play in defence. I hope it’s not another Mattner experiment.

Now theres the biggest worry... you're already working on the excuse.

Look, im not willing to write Campbell off, but come on, when was the last time a Crows player was blooded in the midfield? Nearly everyone who's come into the team in recent times has done so in a position in either the forward or back lines. Its entirely upon Campbell to perform with the role he's given. His problems were not positional either, he struggled with the pace early in the game, and had issues with his disposal.

Jumped early a few times...but he has got some mad hops. No doubt.

I'm with you Gets, has a good leap on him, started off very well, in fact much better than I expected. Had a little down patch in the middle, but then picked up the skills again. His tap behind to Thompson, in the 3rd qtr I think, without even looking at where Thommo was got me a little excited. ;)

I noticed at training last week that he was quite deliberate about making the right decision every time with his disposals. I saw that again tonight but with a bit quicker reaction time. Plus some lovely marks in the back half too. My god we have ruck options that can mark!

How good was the quick handball, the guys looked very sharp. However the standouts for me were Porps, Vince and Sellar, fanfuekentastic, great signs. I have always had a special little ungay spot for Bernie and I hope this is his breakout year, a very creative player, just what we need to be more unpredictable and more explosive out of the guts...good night

I was watching bits of the game, and this Sellar bloke looks like an absolute gun. Im not sure if he just happened to always have the ball when I was watching, but this kid looks like he has some real talent. One to watch out for. Loved his game, or at least the parts that I watched of it. From the back he reminded me of Buddy Franklin...

Was once touted a number one draft pick but he was struck down by gladnular fever back in 06 and therefore slipped a bit.

Yup. Im confident that by the end of his career there will be some clubs regretting overlooking Jimmy. Especially one down the road which happens to lack young key position players of any talent.

Apparently he made it fairly clear at the pre draft interview with Choco that he wasn't interested in playing for the PAFC so there was no point in drafting him. And on your last point, i would agree there is a lack of promising key forwards apart from probably J Westhoff (not sure why we drafted his brother), but Chaplin and Carlile will turn into handy key defenders.

We played good old Adelaide Crows football today in beautiful weather conditions and some very interesting desert surroundings/sand dunes, buildings, etc. Doughty played a very good game, and our new ruckmen Brad Moran and Kurt Tippet looked very promising. #29 Sellar has the body to become a big time key forward. Last year the team underpeformed when it was actually a much better side, it was so dissapointing last year. What I saw in todays game was a sensational side that busted the hell out of the opposition and gave them no chance from start to finish but the Pies at full strength (health wise) are a flag contender. I want to see this team (style of play) in every game this year. Reminded me of the 2005 and 2006 Adelaide sides. Finals garunteed if we continue to play like this throughout 2008 but I can't make predictions right now. I'm definetley coming to the Round 2 game at AAMI vs West Coast next month to be among the 40,000 plus people and we might even prove the doubters wrong and win that game?.

I would've given the votes as --

3 - Porplyzia
2 - Bock
1 - Thompson

With good signs from Sellar, Tippett, Knights & Symes

Johncock doesn't look as primed & ready as the rest of the team, he played okay, but not up for the midfield I reckon

I was at the game today and you guys looked sharp - pretty good skills for a Feb game.

I must say after sitting behind JCock - he has fantastic decision making ...always has time and is absolute class.

Just finished watching the match, am extremely pleased with the result, but really we have got to remember that this was the 9th of Feb, a long way to go yet. What was really impressive was the lack of imput the 3 muskateers had, whilst Goodwin kicked 4 and looked dangerous, he didn't win the game, it was the youngsters in the midfied who won it. The defence was extremely solid, still getting rid of a little rust, but still very good, Bock AA CHB definitely if he keeps that form up.

But wow, wernt the young guys impressive, Sellar began to why he was rated so high by some and by the looks, must have come on in leaps and bounds, pushin for a spot round 1. Tippets athleticism was amazing, this bloke shouldn't be 201cm, dropped a couple of sitters, but i'll forgive him for that, both he and Sellar look like they could be the answers to our forward line, but then Tippet could do it in the ruck as well. Jacky probably isn't quite ready, but looks a likely sort, liked Mackay, but didn't see a heap of him, attacked the footy well. Thought Symes was good, got into everything, disposal not amazing, but pleased. Moran, like Tippet, is a freak in the way he moves for a bloke his size, took some good marks in defence, again pleased.

I think finally we have found our new midfield, Reilly, Thompson, Knights, Porplyzia, Vince, VB, Symes, Mackay. Porplyzia was amazing, doesn't need the motor of a VB, just knows where to run, works hard and uses his amazing ball skills, Vince finally looked ready to play AFL.

Doughty really shouldn't be there, I love the way he goes about his footy and his attack on the ball is top notch, but skills and ability to hurt the opposition really isnt there, he is a good depth player.

Cambell, again great attack on the footy and the man, I just fear for his ability to hold a place in the side and regularly hurt the opposition, would love to see him prove me wrong and there were a few good things he did. Hardly saw Shirley, so I assume he didn't get a lot of game time.

Mcgregor didn't do a heap, Sellar and Tippet looked more dangerous, a couple of good things, needs to do more of them though.

Great first up match, just hope it wasn't an anomaly, would like to see us give the NAB cup a good go, these youngsters need some good quality match experience before the season and the NAB cup is the best place to get it, not travelling to places like Albany with unlimited bench sizes. Less apprehensive about the season now, the boys looked sharp and it will be good to see how they go on Australian soil.

Great start to the year but I really hope we continue to play the young boys over the next 5 weeks and throughout the season. It will be very tempting for NC to play say a Doughty in front of a Mackay in the season proper but we need to, even if it means losing.

I really hope the likes of Gallman, Jericho, Otten etc get to play a few games over the next few weeks as well.

Off the subject a bit I would love to see stats on new players on AFL lists and how many get injured in their first pre-season & or season proper. If you just look at our new players from the 06 draft Sellar, Tippett, Mackay, Gill & Campbell were all injured. From the 07 draft I think Jacky is the only one who has got through unscathed so far. So obviously the step up in training has a lot to do with this.
So my question is: Should these new players to our list be given slightly less of a workload to begin with or should we continue to see if they have what it takes and if they get injured along the way so be it? I don't know the answer but don't the boys from the 06 draft look different players this year.
Maybe I have answered my own question here by noticing if they weren't pushed so hard last year maybe they wouldn't be where they are now. Your thoughts.

Strongly disagree with you here- won a ton of the hardball, looked to have real poise and for pick 28 looks to be one hell of a pick up

From what the Port people have seen of Marlon Motlop (2007 National Draft pick 28) so far, we are very happy in getting him for Symes

I was very very pleased with what I saw last night, geez we have some cracking kids on our list, I think what we seen last night with Mcleod, Goodwin and Edwards out of the midfeild is how it needs to be this year, the new midfeild now needs to develop and it looks like its coming along nicely:thumbsu:

Sellar what a great set of hands and it proves if you deliver the ball well to a player like Sellar on the lead he will take it everytime.

Drummond mentioned it and I will aswell Burton was very very frustrating last night, he needs to get the rubbish out of his game:thumbsdown:

What a terrrific - and somewhat unexpected result! :D Hubby (Mr Negatiity) asked me (Mrs Positivity) before the game if I thought we had a chance, and I said "Not a hope in hell". I thought the Pies squad was far stronger than ours, we had dubious ruck stocks and I had no idea where the goals would come from. Well, aren't I glad to be proved wrong!

A third of Collingwood's squad had gastro, that's 8.2 players. They were at the end of a 3 week away trip.... but who's fault is that?? And it is the NAB cup... but, there were signs last night that indicate that this season may not be the doom and gloom everyone and his dog were predicting.

Great signs last night from Bernie Vince, Richie Douglas - both seem to have gone up that extra notch. Porps, VB, Reilly and Knights are all class acts. How exciting was it to see Jimmy Sellar present the way he did?? :thumbsu: Moran, Tippett and Symes all showed something too. Goodie and Macca BELONG up forward. Bock BELONGs back! I thought it was a great team effort and a clearly changed game plan. Far more attacking and positive.

Some downers for the night included the underwhelming performances by Jacky and Campbell. I really hope they both get game time for every pre-season game to help them adjust to the pace. I notice a few of you have given Thommo a huge wrap, and I'm wondering if I watched the same game?? I felt he panicked a fair bit last night and his decision making looked dubious. Was disappointing to see senior players make the clangers they made (Rutten, Thommo, Johncock)... but I guess we have to make allowances for it being first game back. Burton's selfishness is infuriating.

I have to give Maric a wrap too, I was most impressed with his efforts last night.

Overall I'd say we have the nucleus of a very good team. I think we have to allow for a fair amount of inconsistency from the new blokes which means we will probably have an up and down season. But I reckon it's going to be exciting to watch... :thumbsu:

Sidenote: Is it possible for someone to troll their own boards??? (>>>>Ferris Rules) Apologies to Kanga's supporters for this clown, and thanks for the congrats.

He has a ton of courage - no question. So did Matthew Smith and you know the story there. ;)

My concern with Campbell is that Thompson, Reilly, VB, Knights and Shirley (and Doughty :)) are all better mid-fielders than him, and we have added Porplyzia, Symes, Vince and Douglas to the mid-field - and they are all better than him.

That's why Craig would have tried him elsewhere. Personally I see him as no more than an honest battler at this level, although I concede that it is hard to adapt to a fixed position when you are an on-baller of his type.

I know you love him to death Drummond, but I fear that he isn't going to make it.

Agree - drafting him was a bit of a gamble at that age......we did it when we were experimenting with mature age recruits. He looks way too slow and has peripheral vision issues.

I'm sure he's a gun at Norwood - but if you're not threatening regular AFL football at his age - the signs are worrying as there were plenty of younger guns with slicker bags of tricks

Just watched it and was mighty impressed.

Sellar looks a bit like Kevin Pieterson, lets hope he gets as arrogant on the field ....

Symes looks like he belongs in a Crows jumper.

Moran is handy. I feel he will be a defender and not a ruckman

Tippett looks comfortable in Ruck

Maric for me was pleasin. He will be our number one Ruck this year and one of the AFLS best young Rucks

Sorry Kenny but the kids are gonna overrun you.

Jacky looks lively. The player we need.

Goody in Forward lines could be a masterstroke.

hard not to be excited, even though we did just beat a Pies team that were more interested in PR than playing footy after jetting in from South Africa. However we did win by 81 points and not just a handfull of points. And the Pies were the only team to push the Cats in the finals last year.

Cant wait till we play WCE or Freo. Give a better indication.

It was a great performance last night but putting it into perspective it is still February and Collingwood are traditionally not very good this time of the year. Let’s see how we go next round against WCE or Fremantle.

James Sellar showed enough to suggest he could be a long term star. Hopefully they give him a handful of games early in the season and persevere with him. He looked very good and mobile.

Bernie Vince was very impressive and could be an early favourite for the NAB rising star award. Smooth mover who has little trouble finding the ball.

David McKay showed he has very nice skills and will have no trouble stepping up to the next level. Will be a bit like Douglas last year by only getting limited game time when he gets an AFL game in 2008 but. Long term prospect

Kurt Tippett has very good hands and took a strong pack mark. I will keep an eye on him next games; he was good and only showed a glimpse of what he can do.

Simon Goodwin should stay as a half forward/ forward pocket player and could quite easily kick 50 goals for the season. Same with Andrew McLeod, he may not kick as many goals but he would assist other to kick them.

I am preparing to make a shrine for Sellar

But remember fellas, this is the NAB cup. We might look good for one game, but as history will tell it means jack shit.
