we should of jumped at the chance to send him home to adelaide...

I am willing to give him one more chance... say 3 rounds of the real stuff... and then if he does nothing that impresses then time to ship him off...

too bad his currency is a lot lower than at the end of 2006 when he was "homesick"

Trade bait for the end of season.
Hasn't done enough to prove himself, and we should trade him while he still has some value.

There is no point persisting with guys that aren't going to be good enough to make the blues a force again

Trade Bait ?!?!

Only in 2006 - Port wouldn't give up more than Pick #39 for him !!

It's a Kepler Bradley situation all over again this time ... its our problem :(

Firstly we have the luxury of 2 nominated rookies this year so Ellard can be one of those, therefore we dont have to "injure" Russel for Ellard to strutt his stuff. Anyway story lines like that belong in Underbelly.

Secondly it seems to me that the only way Russell is going to take the next step is to get his confidence. If I was Ratts i would stick him in the 2nds and just wait until he forces his way back in- no half measures where we bring him back because he is merely "showing a few signs" he needs to be demanding a position. If he cant do that during this year then fagetaboutim.

This bloke is no good and the sooner we realise it the better. He had 3 possesisons last night in a game where he spent alot of time on the ground. The sooner you people realise it the better, HE IS HOPELESS...where not going anywhere with guys like this.

Why the f^ck isnt Blackwell playing can any tell me, is it because he can find the football or is because he doesnt run 2.8 secs over 20 metres like Fairy Russell.

I need answers.............
It's because Blackwell isn't a good enough footballer and is still built like Ellard after four years of development. Russell isn't taking Blackwell's position who doesn't play forward and only averages 13 possessions a game. Pea heart is harsh when it's more a question of talent and a lack of a football brain after he has put his body in the line of fire in games. But don't let the facts get in the way of you singling out one Carlton player and this board's whipping boy for criticism after a loss.

It isn't a fluffed pick when Russell had the pace and skill to attract the attention of more than one AFL recruiter.

JR couldn't force his way into a 7/11 store.

You think he still has some value? What has he done that would give him any value?

Give me a break mate...Blackwell isnt good enough....pfft please mate have you actually watched him. The guy finds the footy, is well composed and has a beautiful kick, thats three more things he has over Russell.

He is the whipping boy because he hasnt shown anything mate, tell me what he has done. Its blokes like you mate that will never make this club a power again because you accept 3rd rate footballers. Its time to get serious with our players and Russell is one of them.

Saw him take a strong mark from in front in the first 10 minutes then it was the last I saw of him.

I don't think of the NAB Cup as the be all and end all of football so i'm happy to at least watch some home & away footy before making judgements on players. Be interested to see how he goes now he bulked up a bit. Been ok at times but certainly hasn't played like a pick 9. We have all year to see how he goes so i'll make judgements then. This time last year some people were saying Carrots wasn't up to AFL standard and he was here about the same amount of time. As we've seen things change so i'll wait to see some real footy.

Come on, you can't actually expect us to believe you have that good intel on the 15 other recruiters??:p

Have you stolen Barack Obamas crystal ball ?
By the same token,

You can't exactly say that anyone other than your mate Hughesy, rated Russell as a 1st round pick pre-draft? :)

Burgan had him at #9 ;)

The Blues are likely to opt for Russell, particularly with Collingwood and Port Adelaide right in the mix for the speedy South Australian. Both the Magpies and the Power have the number 10 and 11 picks. There is also a slim chance that Egan could also slip through to Carlton's second choice at number 25, but it is firmly believed that Russell won't last any longer than the top-15. A midfielder with genuine pace and fine skills, Russell spent most of the season in West Adelaide's senior side, while he also represented South Australia at this year's National Bank's AFL under-18 championships. His pace shone through at the recent Draft Camp when he finished in the top three per cent for speed testing over five, 10 and 20 metres. He also recorded a time of 2.89 seconds for the 20-metre dash.

He talks to a number of recruiters :)

Russell had enough performance runs on the board that combined with top draft camp results, made him an attractive proposition pre draft....his relative lack of development since might have been difficult to predict.

*shakes gilly by the collar*

WHY WONT U JUST ADMIT WAYNE HUGHES MADE A MISTAKE !!!!!

It looks like he panicks every time he is near the ball. A year ago I would have said he should be groomed as the teams no 1 run-with tagger i.e. purely negating role. Now that I think about it though, the role requires some onfiled physical presence, something Russell is bereft of.

Perhaps it was a mistake Harry (hindsight), recruiters make mistakes all the time, according to your argument, there were 70-odd mistakes made with regards to Pavlich........ adnauseum I knoe, but recruiting is an inexact science, so in that regard you can't strictly call it a mistake....mistakes are usually determined by clearly quantifiable means. If Russell was considered to be around the 10-30 mark then strictly speaking it wasn't a mistake......it was a selection that just didn't pay off.....mind you that 10-30 range hasn't produced anything to write home about either. Admit you are wrong C4.

I would be interested to see our recruiting budget pre-Pratt, I dare say WH didn't have the resources back in '04 that he has now.

Pick #39 .. which is crap.

From the 2006 draft (suggesting we got pick 39 for him)
#39 - Nathan Krakouer (PA)
#40 - Josh P. Kennedy (HAW) (i thought was f/s but not listed as one)
#63 - Tyson Goldsack (COLL)
#71 - Justin Westhoff (PA)
#82 - Aaron Edwards (KANG)
#86 - David Rodan (PA)

Port did alright out of that draft... I would of taken 39 for him!

I'd take Krakouer ahead of JR too. While Goldsack has shown a bit for Collingwood I'm not sure he's the type we need more of. While everybody is lauding the Westhoff pick in hindsight I'm still not convinced he will ever be a dominant KPP and Port only chose him on a whim because the player they were intending on selecting with that pick had gone. Edwards no thanks....Rodan, not for us.
