Who does Stokesy replace?

He's been ok I'm not saying he's been terrible. Just saying it could be considered. I think Stokes is more important to our team these days than Josh and I personally prefer Rooke and see Hunt as someone we can cover for.

Well, you have no idea. Rooke has done nothing since his return last year and cannot be relied on to play on a small gun forward, being why he never does.

Mackey has been crap this year. He gets torn to bits in nearly every 1 on 1 contest he takes part in, he even got pushed aside by Jack Reiwlodt on the weekend?? WTF??!! Too small and if he isn't damaging with his disposal, which he isn't too much... he's not much use.

If you concede that your playing favourites then fine, I'll accept your opinion. If your talking about team structure your just plain wrong. Our defense without Hunt leaves us too tall... Hunt takes usually the best small forward and is damaging with his disposal, Stokes is flashy and looks great (therefore loved by the average fan). Maybe you are just an average fan. Ever heard of structure to a team? Ever actually played the game?

The game isn't all about kicking goals, its equally about stopping the opposition. Keep that in mind. If half of you simpletons had it your way you would pick all flashy forwards...

These discussions get so heated...

Not Hunt, he's been good this year and I'll get the dvd out to check but I think he did well in both games against the Pies last year...

Not Hawkins, he need as much time in the 1's as possible, he's part of the premiership plans and you don't risk it. He may not have been great against the Tigers but he's been solid all year.

Not Rooke. I'm a Rooke fan and think his hardness is something that is needed, especially in big games.

Mackie is an interesting name to be thrown up, I was furious with his performance against Freo, not super happy with him against the Lions, 34 disposals that left me wondering if we had anyone more wastefull. But I think he's important and was pretty good against the Tigers, he played a great link role coming out of defense or into forward 50...

I think barring injury that it's Gamble, but I said that earlier. It could be a real eye opener as to whether Vegas is seen to be a major part of the team right now or a player earning the right to challenge for a more regular role.

Going to ignore your insults. Rooke's last two games have been handy, just as most of his games were from when he returned last year. How the hell could you question his worth to the side from when he returned from overseas treatment? He does a lot of things you don't see and is highly respected by the team. He is in the leadership group.

Macky is also not great defensively but his last two games have again been way better. Has provided great run and clean disposal out of defense. I don't always love him but he is actually a really important to Geelong at our devastating best.

Again with regards to structure, we survived fine without Hunt as defender last year and would be fine this year too. Hunt has provided rebound early this year but still I would not say he has consistently been 'damaging with his disposal' since 2004. You keep talking about stopping the opposition. Hunt is not great at doing that. Never has been and never will be.

Stokes is not just a flashy player. He has been outstanding as a forward. He improves every game and now pushes right up the ground to find the ball. You think life is easy for a forward like him? The numbers are rarely on your side (as opposed to being defense) and the pressure can be far higher. Stokes has shown an ability to be creative and accurate when passing and deadly when kicking for goal. My mates who support opposition teams already concede when he has a shot he 'should' get you can put it in the book.

This is important and is what separates someone like Stokesy from failures like Gardiner, Kingsley, Playfair, etc who did not have the composure like Stokes does. Since our rebuild we have always been pretty good defensively but is only in the last two years we have been such a consistently great offensive team.

I'm not necessarily saying Hunt should be dropped. However, I do believe Stokes has become more important to our side and that having regained some decent form and being in the leadership group that Rooke should stay in. Whoever misses out is going to be very stiff.

Was this Mr Mackey playing ?

Didn't Hunt get touched up by a 1st gamer on the weekend ?

It is ridiculous to say Stokes is just a flashy player. Not a lot has separated him and Chapman this year. These two are both extremely valuable to our team.

Hunts disposal is much better than it was in 2004. He might not be getting the kickouts like then but since he was dropped in 07 he has played very very good footy.

I think it has to be out of Mackie, Taylor, Rooke & Gamble. Gamble and Taylor have played better footy than the other two this year IMO so I would choose one of Rooke or Mackie.

I think Rooke is on the improve while Mackie is too soft for my liking. definitely I would drop Mackie but wouldn't be disappointed if it was Rooke.

In theory couldn't Mackie be dropped and Rooke slotted into his position? Rooke has demostrated his versatility on more then one occasion.

Mackie dropped what the hell, this is worst then the Hawkins and Mensch thread, what are u guys on about, mackie plays an important role in out team, to suggest he be dropped is a joke, please!

Have to say I agree 100%.

Hunt gets a fair bit of the footy, which is not surprising given the way our defence share it around, and his main value to the side is his disposal which can be very damaging, but the defensive side of his game is not great, actually the worst of our back six in that regard IMO, gets beaten far to often in one on one contests.

Think he's lucky to be playing in the best defensive unit in the competition because if he was in an average side he'd be a bit of a disaster I believe, matter of fact would really struggle to hold a spot "in defence" in a struggling team.

Was going to agree with you as well about Stokes, but it hardly needs saying really, one of the least flashy players one could imagine, just a hard nut who goes about his work with the minimum of fuss much like Chapman, and I don't think anyone would call Chappy flashy.

Thought it would be either Rooke or Gamble making way for Stokes Friday, but after just watching Saturdays match again and seeing how much time Rooke spent deep in defence it wouldn't surprise me if Hunt is the [ unlucky ] one to miss out.

Ever seen Mackey in a contest? The answer must be no, or you do in fact know nothing, therefore I'm wasting my time.

Hawkins out and Simpson in????

Is this from people who read he's kicked a few bags or someone that has actually watched them both play this year?

Hawkins won't be dropped for Simpson because that idea is ridiculous.

Well yes actually. I go to both the VFL and AFL evey week and think Hawkins needs a week in the VFL. Simpson would be the logical replacement as Longergan is just as bad
