G'day guys,

After captaining this great club for a number of years the time has come to announce my departure to join the new mod squad side. I leave the club in the more than capable hands of Tarkyn who has been a great captain thus far.
Geez, it's sad to see you going!

Excellent service to the club mate, it will be different not having your presence around!

Well done mate.:thumbsu:

Yes, finally, first ruckman. :D

Sad to see ya go mate.

Can I be rested from this game please? Have to invoke the Veteran's clause (I have played nearly 120 senior games, more than just about anyone else on this list).
Ditto, as third most experienced on the list, surely I'm bound by this clause also.:D

Welcome to the Mt Buller Demons, gala function; the 2007/2008 Best and Fairest count, sponsored by the Lakeside Lightning and Motorola, official 2008 sponsors. In our night of nights tonight, the Best and Fairest, Team 20, Leadership positions, farewells and miscellaneous awards will be announced and discussed at length; and the 2008 jumpers unveiled.

To kick off the night tonight, let’s have a look back at the exploits of the Mt Buller Demons; the tears, the tantrums and the success – the story of 07/08.

The opening round of the season kicked off with a young, inexperienced core of players meeting the Southern Dragons, a club expected to be almighty; a club with the experience and skill to win a flag. These traits were on display, as the Dragons bombarded the goals, roaring to a 67 point thrashing of the Demons. Bomberlegend2007 and ScottyD had impressive debuts; but other than that the Demons were ordinary.

It didn’t look as though the season was about to get any better for the Demons, expected to go 0-2 from the first two games as they met the previous season’s premiers; the Bigfooty Bombers. After the previous week, Tarkyn and V_Townsend demanded bloodshed, and they got it from the young list as they downed the Bombers by 57 points, setting the scene of the season for the Bombers. Tarkyn came good after a poor game at Full Back with 30 disposals in the middle, and dtm06 was best on field in the performance.

The third match of the season was against premiership favourites; the unbeaten East Side Hawks. Despite the obvious gap in skill and experience between the two clubs, all the members of the 2007 Elimination Final revved the young Demons up for a big game against their arch rivals. Not to be denied; the Hawks and Demons matched each other goal for goal in the muddy, slippery conditions. After 100 minutes of a slog; the siren sounded, concluding the game; consigning the Demons to heartbreak – the Hawks were home by the barest of margins, a solitary point. Truebluenavyblues was impressive, and Spadge and larkis tried hard all day.

The Demons fourth game of the 2007/08 season was to be played against the Roys boys and a classic tussle ensued. With a strong midfield posse, and stmookeyj playing well, the Demons dominated the second half to pull away 72 point victors. 15Petterd15 had a wonderful day for the Demons in the forward line whilst Deestroy and EddieBear continued their two man dominance.

The fifth round of the season saw Mt Buller; boasting a 2-2 record and running on confidence, meet the eventual premiers, the Fighting Furies, in what was expected to be an entertaining tussle. The opposite was the result, the Furies dominating from start to finish – the score line displaying only a 21 point margain, but the true reflection of dominance was that it was much larger. Stmookeyj, EddieBettsIsAChamp and Deestroy again provided polished performances around the ground, while Spadge played his strongest game yet for his new club.

The Demons dropped further down the ladder after an insipid Round 6 performance against bogey team, the Gumbies, and the leadership group was forced to re-evaluate the team list, potential and expectations – the premiership was no longer realistic. The Gumbies outclassed the Demons, hitting hard and often, emerging with a 6 goal win. While former Demon nick_savo hurt his former darlings, two power forwards emerged in the Demon line-up; dtm06, the new kid on the block was one of the best afield, while machine DeledioToTambling lived up to early season hype.

The Demons played their round 7 match against the rabble of the SFA; a Wonders squad with no captain, no heart, no spirit, and most importantly, no posters. They played as insipid as they posted, yet remained in a position to win until the very end, such was the incompetence of the Demons at that point in spirit; running on empty – Tarkyn was leading poorly from the front, and only the input of a few could be taken as a positive. JDC! Got a game and repaid the captain, while ScottyD and dtm06 continued a good start to their debut seasons and Deestroy was again his own industrious self in the ruck.

The struggling Bigfooty Bombers met the Buller boys for a round 8 clash of titanic proportions – both teams were desperate for a win to keep the season alive heading into the break. The Dees ran dead cold, yet, much like the Wonders the week before, managed to stay in the match until the very end and keep the score line respectable. V_Townsend, amidst a purple patch, hit his straps for an amazing performance that left most onlookers astounded – but he was fighting too many alone. The 8 point loss was a closer score than could be expected, only rookie Westcoaster87 and dashing flanker Bomberlegend supplied any substance to support the big V.

Since round 6 in 2007, the Hawks and Demons had played out three matches for a combined total of a margain of 10 points. In all three games, the Hawks had forced the Demons to check into Heartbreak Hotel, but on a cloudy night, the Demons finally got one back. A late rushed behind was the winning margain in a return to form for the Demons, who won the 112-111 clash best led by Spadge up forward and a dearth of poor midfielders. It led to much finger-pointing in the Hawks camp; while Tarkyn unsuccessfully attempted to quash rumours that he was soon to become a Hawk himself.

In matches during the 2007 and 2007/08 matches, the Demons had repeatedly been foiled in the midfield, exploited by quick midfielders Moo and The Reaper. Neither, however, were reaching their high flying standards set in previous seasons, and the Buller boys made them pay with their second on the trot, playing with much more intensity than their earlier attempts. Despite a terrible record against the Dragons and S. Dragons in recent times (0-2), (0-1); and a mediocre effort against the Sharks (1-1), the Demons were well led by a core of players. Deestroy was instrumental in the win, backed up by fellow veteran stmookey and youngsters larkis, magpiegirl_13 and dtm06. It was to be the last Buller games for 15Petterd15 and ScottyD, but, ironically, they were to recruit The Reaper from the opposition. The 51 point win (117-66) not underlining the Demons dominance.

Buller posted a third win in a row with a remarkable come from behind effort against the struggling Roys outfit to snare a three point win in miserable conditions. Tarkyn played forward of the ball – hidden in a forward pocket - and the Demons seemed to drop their heads. A late goal clinched the win, the 68-65 scoreline, ultimately, not displaying the Roy dominance. Kerr4PM put on an impressive display in his first bout for the new club.

Drinking didn’t cease the next week for anyone bar EddieNettsIsAChamp (self imposed alcohol ban). The Demons went toe to toe with the Gumbies in a clash with high stakes; remaining in touch with the trendsetters of the league. V_Townsend had the best game that had ever been seen in a Demon Guernsey, on his way to a six goal, near 40 disposal effort. While Magpiegirl_13 and larkis also contributed their own attempts at record breaking efforts, they were no where near the league of the Demon vice-captain. A bit of soul searching, however, was still required up in the snowy peaks, with various senior players performing to a very mediocre standard in the 115-95 victory.

Amongst all of the 2007 leadership group members, none had ever experienced a loss to the West Coast Wonders, with the ledger between the five players squared at 13-0 over a maximum of 3 games each. However, the Wonders, led by new captain Kerrby, pulled off one of the shocks of the season to beat an ordinary Buller, perhaps flying high after the streak, 90-81. Gippy hit some form during the outing, but it was bleak blotch on the season history for Mt Buller.

The Demons entered the Round 14 clash against the Richmond affiliates, the Fighting Furies, with their heads stooped, their confidence at dangerously low levels. Mt Buller were yet to defeat the Furies all season, their last victory against the Furies recorded in Round 2, 2007 – and unfortunately, that record still stands. The Furies outclassed the Demons from start to finish, but Buller, with their typical verve, rallied late to bring the margain to a respectable 7 points, 92-85. The midfield played well and serviced the forwards with lace-out delivery, but they just wouldn’t go down for the Demons. WazzaAC was easily best on ground.

The Demons jumped to positive figures (8-7) with an absolute demolition of flag favourites, the East Side Hawks, in their third and final match-up for season 2007/08. Disbelief and pandemonium ensued post match in the Hawks rooms – suffering their worst thrashing in more than two years at the hands of their biggest rivals. The 8 goal win, 106-59, was the catalyst for the Demons hunger – the need to achieve a finals position by seasons end. The source of best service came from the unlikely – DeledioToTambling strung a strong game together, as did Gippy, and Osmodiar and The Reaper provided all night.

The next scalp seemed as though it was destined to come effortlessly against the Bigfooty Bombers in their Round 16 clash but yet again the Demons found themselves ahead of themselves, and the usual result followed – a seven point loss. Larkis and HomerJnr held the fort down well for the Demons on a disappointing night, but it simply wasn’t enough.

As though the week before hadn’t been poor enough, for the majority of their round 17 clash. The Buller boys and girls struggled against a terrible Roys outfit. A late burst held the RoyBoys at bay, but further soul searching was desperately required at Mt Buller over the week, sliding home to a narrow win.

Desperately seeking a win, the Demons met the Dragons on foreign soil for the round 18 clash between the two. In a high scoring game, an efficient Southern outfit destroyed a terrible Demon group – sealing the game with a 51 point win; DeledioToTambling playing well, but he was alone in doing so.

In a week that caused uproar throughout league circles, Tarkyn drew on precedent in order to snare two undeserved points as the Demons struggled against a convincing Geelong outfit. For the Demons, it represented a fourth poor game on the trot; although not all signs were bad, EddieBettsIsAChamp again hit form with four goals and 28 disposals, but he was quite alone.

For the third week in a row, the Demons had to put their necks on the line to save their season. Yet again, they failed, and, mathematically, could not possibly play finals football if not for punishing premiership points conceded by the Round 21 opponents, the Wonders. The Demons stayed in touch all day, but, for the third time during the season, they were defeated by the Furies – another deserved win on the way to the finals for the Tiger-clad group.

This game had it all, the drama stolen straight from the average Home and Away episode without the crappy acting, the Demons were set to meet the West Coast Wonders in a round 21 clash to determine the final finalist for 2007/08. In a classic clash between the two foes, Tarkyn led from the front with a dominating four goal, 35 possession display, whilst his two smaller sidekicks, WazzaAC, and truebluenavyblues, were everywhere.

The first week of finals permitted the Demons to regroup for a clash against the Southern Dragons – in an elimination final. From go to woe, the Demons matched it with the opposition, in the end, clamouring to a massive lead before having it whittled away and fighting tooth and nail for a 21 point win. EddieBettsIsAChamp and Magpiegirl_13 were both at the higher end of the disposal scale, scoring 29 and 28 a piece.

The Demons season came to a close against the other navy blue team in the SFA, the Geelong Gumbies. Continuing a tradition of starting poorly against the Gumbies, the Demons were forced to inch closer as they game wore on and the Geelong mob became fatigued. However, just when it looked like the Demons might have done enough to put themselves in a winning position with an EddieBetts goal, the Gumbies snuffed the hopes, the Demons season, with a goal themselves. The 87-80 scoreline underlined the importance of a decent start to the leadership group – much of which was to head over to the Gumbies in the off season.

Now, to the awards, first cab off the rank is the Deestroy Medal, named in honour of the former captain – playing his final SFA match for the Demons in the 7 point semi final loss. In what is to become a time honoured tradition, the Deestroy Medal will simply become a token of appreciation to a year of servicing the club as the captain – or, potentially, captains. Therefore, this season winner will be Tarkyn_24, while retrospective medals bearing Deestroy’s name will also be distributed.

Next on the agenda would have been the presentation of the best Forward, Backman and Midfielder, throughout the 2007/08 SFA season, however, unfortunately, the counts for all three awards have been lost within the club hierarchy. Therefore, it is essential that the leaders, yet again, recount the votes for the entire season, individually, and therefore, this award shall be presented at a later date to the three recipients.

The Rookie of the Year award, in its inaugural season along with many other awards this season, is an award which identifies which newcomers to the league possess qualities that will take them, eventually, to a high standing in the competition hierarchy. The award is adjudicated on a number of merits, including posting output and player performance. The Rookie of the Year is available to only those members of the squad whom play less than 10 games throughout the season, and are first year players – the award, as it stands, rewards those ineligible for other awards simply because of the time in which they begin their careers. This seasons Rookie Of The Year has been shared between two players who have exemplified the Demon spirit throughout season 2007/08; Carapalis, and Mattyboy_08, are the worthy winners of the coverted award.

The player best looked upon by their team-mates throughout the season is deserving of an award; and, as it stands, the player that has won this award is expected to steal a few after a fantastic debut season. The winner of this award, Best Team Player, exemplifying the votes of his team throughout various stages of the season, is EddieBettsIsAChamp

As Mount Buller qualified to contest finals in season 2007/08, another award, Best Finals Player, is up for grabs for the player who excelled in the business part of the season, in terms of supporting their team and consistency throughout the finals pressure. In an industrious season in which she found her niche as a rover, the winner of the Best Finals Player award, on the back of two very impressive performances, is Magpiegirl_13.
