Plenty of interest in Lovett: Essendon

Andrew Lovett is being highly sought after by rival clubs

ESSENDON says the Sydney Swans are just one of many clubs to have shown interest in midfield speedster Andrew Lovett.

The Swans flew the 25-year-old north to meet with club officials and players on Monday.

But Bombers recruiting manager Adrian Dodoro said on Wednesday there was no shortage of suitors for Lovett, who is contracted for next season.

"He's spoken to a lot of other clubs; there's a lot of interest in him at the moment," he said.

Despite being suspended by the Bombers this season over disciplinary issues, the club says it will take the right offer to prompt a trade for the talented 66-gamer.

"He's spoken to some clubs and we'll see what they come up with; he's a contracted player," Dodoro said.

He refused to reveal what the club would need in return for Lovett, but the club is believed to be seeking a late first round or early second round draft pick.

Swans star forward Ryan O'Keefe, who is considering a move to a Melbourne club, has been mooted as a possible component in a deal if Lovett wants to head to the harbour city.

O'Keefe's manager Tom Petroro said the 27-year-old premiership player had met with several clubs, but remained undecided over whether he would leave the Swans to return to his home state.

He said a desire to play for a successful club and in front of big crowds would be two of the main lures for O'Keefe if he did make a move.

Finally we have got the upper hand in a trade. After saying all this about Lovett I highly doubt he'll stay, but by saying he's contracted, a required player multiple times and he has drawn plenty of interest from plenty of clubs should raise his value that bit more. Hopefully we can get that early second rounder for him, will be good to get a number of high picks in one of/if not the last normally run drafts for quite sometime.

O'Keefe has a desire to play with a successful club and a club that draws big crowds, so plenty of support behind them. Collingwood, Carlton and us would have to be big chances. I personally would like him at the club, but will be a bit to expensive for a type of player we have plenty of, albeit he is better quality then most of our half forwards though I still think we should pass on him.

Stanton for their pick 12 would be overpaying from their point of view IMO. A sweetener may be needed but I am loathed to just randomly add someone when in reality it doesn't happen often. Perhaps if we threw in a 4th rounder? From the Swans view I think that would be unfair.

Stanton for trade would not be a bad thing, need someone who is ready made and quality midfielder. It was saying in the Age that Essendon chasing Dal Santo hard but Saints not interested. Lovett needs to go for a quality player or no trade but something tells me wont see the number 13 again in the bombers jumer, so we will give it Alwin (the true Longey replacement.

I'd love to get O'Keefe to the club, and I think our chances are better than some other clubs.

But considering he is 28, I just don't see giving away Lovett and pick 23 as the best thing for our future.

I think if Sydney are willing to talk about Lovett and pick 39 then that's something we really need to consider, but it's a very big call to give away our 2nd pick.

On the other hand, I'm not sure if we'll be offered pick 30 for Lovett....

ROK
ROK has said he wants to leave Sydney, so the Swans are a distressed seller. Opposition teams should be screwing them for everything they can get...us included...so no generosity!!!

LOVETT
I think this guy is still very valuable to the team. He can cut up the opposition with his quick changes of direction, jinking, speed. He is the best player in our team at finishing on the run. I struggle to think of an Essendon midfielder that can kick a goal from 50, at least Lovett seems to close quickly to 40 and finishes well...

SPEED
Without Lovett, I reckon our midfield will start looking as slow as treacle. Jobe/Lonergan/Welsh are slow IMO, and some of them lack stamina as well...now the latest suggestions of trading Stanton - would make this even worse...

Davey, Jetta, Dempsey, Winderlich, Houli and Reimers aren't slow... and they're all better than Stanton and Houli, Reimers, Davey and Dempsey are all better than Lovett- or will be, Jetta will be Lovett's equal. They'll all be having stints either on the ball or on the wings. I'm sensing false hopes on Stanton. He is not up to AFL standard (midfield standard).

OK good point, you have given me food for thought.

I should probably start a thread entitled "our centre square players are woefully slow". That would encompass Jobe, Lonergan, Welsh. Maybe Houli can play in there eventually, but most the other names above cannot IMO. I wonder if Stanton could ever play in there consistently...

I still see Lovett as a good lock for the wing position. I think Lovett is better than Winderlich...I don't really see Jetta or Davey playing on a wing...Dempsey could probably do it, if fit...

I doubt Jetta will be able to kick a goal from range quite like Lovett. At the moment he tries to run to 15m from goal to get comfortable with the shot...

Just shooting off some thoughts.

The players in the centre square are there to win clearences, thus why we have our more experienced, and bigger bodies in there.

Then, the players on the wings and flanks move through the midfield after the ball is bounced and in general play, these are typically the runners who add speed to the midfield.

You look at Hawthorn's midfield. They have Mitchell, Sewell and someone like Lewis in the middle, then the quicker players like Bateman and Rioli on the wings and flanks.

So it doesn't matter if you have slow players at the centre bounces, it's more so the guys around the ground who add the pace to the midfield (Winders, Houli, Reimers ,Davey etc)

Lonergan isn't slow at all, and Welsh may be average paced, but can do a little burst when needed. And I don't know why you mention Stanton as if he could ameliorate that problem because while he may not be Jobe slow, he is still not very fast, and he is very one paced as well.

None of those guys are better than Stanton. You could make a case for Winderlich and Davey if they could get on the field, but the others aren't even close atm.

A lot of talk getting around about Stanton. What's the deal here? Why?

I rate him very high and would have thought he's a required player and future captian.

Lovett + 3rd rounder for Sydney's 1st rounder

5. Hurley/Ziebell/Sidebottom
12. Swift/Trengove
23. Zaharakis/Lisle

Any of the above would be sweet:thumbsu::thumbsu::thumbsu:

Possible. As much as i like O'Keefe, i'd rather have Sidebottom, Trengrove and Zaharakis.

Hopefully Roos will agree to that.:)

Put it this way. Davey - most likely not to be at his best for a while next year due to the knee reco. Jetta - still too much of a small forward (not a bad thing, just saying I dont think he will be midfield next year). Dempsey - the dude is very injury prone, I'm not sure what the deal is with him and his injuries. Same for Winders
The point Im trying to make here is that all the fast players that you have mentioned are either recovering from injury, or not ready to be a fulltime midfielder next year.
Anyway, thats my opinion, all I can say is, as a Lovett fan, I hope he doesnt leave lol

Definitely a required player. I dunno about captain, but he should be here for 10 more years.

Your kidding me arnt you?

Are your eyes painted on?

Why is it that Brent Stanton is always a high vote getter at best & Fairest?

Maybe because he is one of our better players!

Davey looks like a gun, but never done anything. Dempsey looks ok but cant get on the park. Same with Houli.
Jetta has potential, but 8 touches a game doesnt make him better than someone that averaged 22 last season.
Same can be said about Riemers. Averages about 15 touches a game, has less impact, but could be a gun. Everyone used to think the same about paul hills and look how that turned out. Winderlich is just overrated. I think he does some good things, but whenever you think he has turned a corner, he gets injured and takes a while to get anywhere. I realise that might be tough on him but I dont see him in our best 22 anymore, even when fit.

Brent Stanton and Jobe Watson are our premier onballers (as well as hille).

Not one player in the club runs as hard as he does. yes he makes a few mistakes. but at 22, he is very young, and still learning the game. He will be a star, if he isnt already. People are way too harsh on him. Especially as none of those players you mentioned get the best tag from the opposition every week. enough said.

I quote Ashley Prescott (01/10/2008).
We would love to get him. He is a super talent. He could become a valuable acquisition.
CHRIS YARRAN.
Is he tall/small? Is he back/mid/fwd? Is he quick/skilled? Big motor? Inside or outside? Tough? One dimensional or multiple tricks?

Is he what we want?
