Hawthorn's Premeirship tally - A result of zoning and nothing else

Your graph also conveniently adjusts 5 years backwards for development of young players yet doesn't adjust forwards for draft picks lost due to champion players.

Another flaw.

It doesn't include the weather either, it's painted in broad brush strokes but it tells a story.

Everyone knows Hawthorn managed to dominate the 70s, 80s and pull the 2nd premiership of the 90s but the question had to be asked how they managed to have such success and dominate the competition for such a long period?

The answer, being given a helping hand through the flawed zoning system which gave them unprecidented access to some of the best players from this era.

Since the zoning system was disbanded and no longer could be argued to have any effect on the competiton, Hawthorn has only managed to win one premiership, which is considered by many to be nothing but a Bradbury.

This begs the question as to how successful Hawthorn really has been? The Dawks supporters love boasting about how dominant and successful they were in the 1980s, yet this had nothing to do with a well managed and successful off-field club.

Hawthorn have shown they really are a very very mediocre club when it comes down to the crunch, much like they were in their first 40 plus years by only managing to win one premiership without the favouritism of zoning.

2009 proved this through and through.

Epic Fail, still sad over hawks dominating you's in 08?

Isn't Chelsea in the Mornington Peninsula league, which was Hawks? If Lethal says so it must be true but I doubt the word of the young Hawks on this board, so many of them have no idea about truth, honesty dignity, integrity etc.

Hawks did do really well out of zoning, like Carlton (Golden Square, what a goldmine!), but all the clubs agreed to it so we have ourselves to blame.

They also recruited pretty damn well, beat Carlton out in a bidding war for Platten (although he kept the incetive car Carlton offered IIRC), picked up Dunbstall when no-one else was looking and got Judge, Buckenara and quite a few others as well from outside the zone system.

Also the Hawks organised a pretty cashed-up little coterie in the 80's which let them buy and keep a pretty crash hot list.

So I disagree with the OP, while they got some corkers from the zones (Brereton Matthews the Abletts Dipper Morrissey and a bunch more) they iced that cake with expensive cream, and didn't break their own bank like my mob did buying stars like Gary Shaw.

Thers obviously some truth in what the OP asserts.

I say so what ?

They still had to develop the talent.

Contrast with richmond and carlton cornering the draft market between them for 5 years (before melbourne moved in ) and still being poor.

At chaddy yesterday I saw a framed picture of "Carlton's No1 draft picks" like its some kind of badge of honour.

The last time we made a Grand Final (1997) we had 4 All Australian Reps.

All 4 were form the Hawthorn "country" zone - Jones, Harvey, Everitt and Burke. In addition Justin Peckett was 3rd in the B&F and Stewie Loewe took the most marks in the comp, both from Hawthorns "country" zone.

St Kildas equal most successful team of the last 40 years was built on the scraps of the Hawthorn "country" zone, the biggest free kick in AFL/VFL history.

All I got from the above post is that St Kilda's most successful team of the last 40 years didn't even taste success.

There must be a different meaning for 'success' at the Saints.

..Stewie Loewe took the most marks in the comp, ..from Hawthorns "country" zone.

Just be greatful we were benevolent enough for you to see this 'champ' in your colours, seeing he was a Hawk reject.

Can we use a similar analogy with early draft picks? How has that worked out for the Saints or other clubs who have continually gone to the well?

There is always an excuse for failure or easy to fault success:thumbsu:

All you jealous *****ers either don't get it or continually play dumb. It does suit though.

do you not think it worked out OK for Hawthorn and their two priority picks?

there is no asterix on Hawthorns 2008 premiership, nor their first.

No, having metropolitan "country" zones would equal success anywhere.

Here's what you should get (and got)- the biggest free kick in AFL/VFL history.

Right, and this 'free kick' won us some flags, yeah?

Am I suppose to be unhappy with this?

why would you be, like most Hawks supporters I know it's probably why you barrack for them.

Thank you for thinking we care or are insulted that we won a shitload of flags.

Nice ego, I didn't realise this was the Hawks board.

I bet you believe Brisbane won theirs on a level playing field too ;)

I certainly won't be whinging about it. :p Im happy they won 3 in a row and I got to see it, 2nd best team of all time behind our fabled zone team. :D

So everyone else picked Hawthorn when they were 5yrs old because they liked the emblem too?
