I suspect McCartney was told he would NOT get the top job at Skilled. As it turns out, a good decision by the Club.

Bloke signs a contract, club enforces contract...simple.
Unless he never had a contract???
Frank Costa will walk out of football this year having turned Geelong from a basket case in huge debt into a powerhouse on and off the field. He hired Brian Cook, and together they eradicated the debt, redeveloped the stadium, got us 40,000 members and hired the staff that took Geelong to 2 flags, something we hadn't been able to do for 44 years. It's karma for Frank Costa.
Came on radio early this year and bagged the Pies over their coaching set up.
Who is laughing now Frank? Destroyed in the prelim, best player walks, coach walks, assistants on the way out, Milburn resigned.
Lol, Geelong are proof that AFL is a brutal business and you have to make the most of your time in the sun cos it does not take long for the fall to come.
I think thats what Collingwood are waiting for to replace Brown as vfl coach because Buckley wants Sanderson there when he takes overIf Hinkley gets the senior job it's hard to see Sanderson sticking around - so that would be yet another change.

It pretty much does. My memory of it is that players outside the top 10 who meet the criteria will be able to move to their club of choice. Neither Ball or Tarrant would have met this classification and as such no drama's.
This will only be the first step, it will eventually become unrestricted free agency and all players will be able to move after a certain period.
No one has the right to tell someone where they will work. Fine, during the first 5 years call it an apprenticeship but after that free to go.
Seems he was the first to jump off the sinking ship.

The Pies were brained mercilessly in the 2009 PF against the Cats, and look what happened the next year.

Yes, more than familiar. That's why I thought I'd post a question on here, checking out more reliable thources!Probably pulled it out of her own arse. As a kangas supporter I would've thought you'd be familiar with the quality of her *ahem* work.
This sad-excuse of a human being should be working for a women's gossip mag and not employed as a "chief" *s******s* football writer of a newspaper.
While the anti-Collingwood trolls are busy pointing out how unscrupulous our tactics are vis-a-vis other clubs, I'm surprised to see so few threads on perhaps the biggest story going around in AFL:
- The dismantling of the mighty Cat empire.
GC took Ablett, no surprise.
Collingwood humiliated Geelong in the Preliminary Final, ok.
Essendon poaching Geelong's coaching staff, with suspicion that the Bombers were talking to Thompson during the season.
Thompson then, according to Caro anyway, apparently luring Brendan McCartney to Essendon even though he has a 3-year deal.
It's an interesting piece from Caro, and just shows how ruthless it can be.
This is the nature of the business, it's not unique to any club.
Essendon is trying to poach Geelong's staff, Carlton trying to poach Collingwood's staff, Collingwood got Luke Ball for nothing, Richmond will get Bachar Houli for nothing, this is the AFL today.
None of it may seem "moral", but it's everyone out for themselves.
Again it would only fix half the problem. Whilst the AFL allows players to go into a draft with conditions attached to themselves, the risk a mockery being made of the process.
Brian Cook spent something like 8 years at Geelong without ever having signed a piece of paper.Contract Law 102 - contracts of the type being discussed must be written.
why would it only fix half the problem?
the draft would only be utilised to distribute new players into the competition. new players dont attach conditions to themselves.
!
TBH it actually isnt that difficult to dismantly theoretically, its putting it into a game situation that could be the issue for alot of clubs. Collingwoods box strategy effectively kills the handball happy game style that the cats had prided themselves on. Kicking the ball instead of handballing releases the pressure even if its a 15m kick, the player than has to man the mark instead of making a tackle if a player had handballed it. You will see alot of sides next year kick the ball more against the pies, make them earn the turnover instead of gift wrapping it. Highly skilled sides can dismantle the pies next year its a matter of doing it over 4 quarters.Well there was also the barracking for Brisbane back in 02/03.
I am taking the piss to be honest. If the Pies can replicate what the cats did ie win two flags i will be over the moon. Winning one is tough but getting another one is even tougher as everyone comes after you once you are top dog and as MM said he invented our box strategy to beat Geelong, it took him 4 years to get it right.
Right now every coach in the AFL will be trying to dismantle the Pies game plan, someone will get it right, our players will get battle fatigue.
Seems to me there are problems at Sleepy Hollow that the goings-on of the last few weeks are beginning to show.
Like?
Reading some of the statements above about the working relationship of McCartney and Hinkley - no-one outside of Geelong would have known about that.
The very public dressing down by Thompson on Ablett - I think that has bred instability - by not backing Gary in publicly and being regularly critical of him, it helped Gary to make up his mind to leave. And then Thompson throws the twist in of himself leaving.
The fact Costa is leaving as president. He has been the chief reason behind the stability down there.
The fact that Cook himself is helping to oversee the appintment of the new coach. Surely he has enough to do to not worry about the appointment and that he would have trusted lieutenants to do this - or doesn't he trust anyone else?
Giving Laidler and Djekkuera the flick, despite both being part of Geelong's future and retaining Milburn, who looked past it for much of 2010. What kind of message does that send for the kids coming through?
Plenty of problems down there.

In 2010 there were alot of signs that they could be beaten regularly which was highlighted by the Adelaide Crows win. The cats started to look a little old, injuries started playing a part and they struggled against teams with outright pace.
