pick No 51: Dean Macdonald

From his mugshot and weight I was expecting someone a tad fat and lazy, but he looks spritely and lithe. High hf rather than just a goalsneak I would hope
Agree. should be playing up the ground a wee bit.
Kicking action looked strange on video, but it was effective. For instance, his stab at the ball on the boundary lookd horrible, but it spun properly and it went through. I guess that's all you can ask hey?

Played with Dean when I was younger. I am 2 years older but he often played up an age group in our side. Always had plenty of talent, he is a natural athlete which has helped him get where he is today. He is smart though, has a knack of being in the right place especially around goals. I can't see him playing midfield at AFL level. He will probably play a Morton of 08/09 role. Deep forward with the ability to play half forward.

I was surprised he was taken in the national draft to be honest. Had a good year for Power but is quite inconsistent and a little one dimensional. Not convinced he will perform at AFL level but he does have a heap of development left. He's a good kid so I really hope he can succeed for our sake and his.

very low possesion getter, will need a much greater work ethic in an afl environment to succeed

HFF who kick over 40 goals in a year generally average more than a couple possessions a game. Does he kick bags then none, how do you know of his inconsistencies?

This is the only pick im unsure about but FJ must of seen something in him...so hopefully he brings his golden kicking boot and bags some serious goals, preferably against the scum.

I really like the look of this kid , I think he moves real well and it will just be a fitness thing with him. I don't expect him to walk into seniors straight up but I do expect to see him adapt very quickly to the tempo when he does.

He just has that special timing with the ball. I hope he just tears into the preseason and gets fit as because he's a real nice size for a medium forward. A very deceptive grab.

why does this guy remind me (physically and intellectually) of Aaron James? there's more than a slight physical resemblance and the story about family tradition of getting a tattoo at the age of 16 hints that he's not the sharpest tool in the shed. let's hope i'm way off the mark.

Re: Dean MacDonald

this is what i just wrote in the Dean McDonald thread ...

"why does this guy remind me (physically and intellectually) of Aaron James? there's more than a slight physical resemblance and the story about family tradition of getting a tattoo at the age of 16 hints that he's not the sharpest tool in the shed. let's hope i'm way off the mark."

Re: Dean MacDonald

Guys, Dunno about it necessarily being a worry... Tigers have lacked a few tough bastard, unsociable footballers for a while. (With talent as well)

As long as he get's it right on the training track, on the field and most importantly between his ears then I don't care if he got his first tattoo at 5 years old!

Needs some Clearasil but...

Doesn't worry me too much about sending your kids down the local tattoo parlor at 16 as long as the tat is somewhere where you can cover it up in a job interview. Tats are a dime a dozen these days but not totally excepted in the work place.

That is a very basic article and one that I worry more about the journo's intelligence more than the kids.

Bit harsh Rusty. I'd have thought that there was a Walkley in waiting for that article.

One thing I learnt, especially on the sporting field, is don't judge a book by its cover.
One day playign footy as a strapping young 22-year-old CHF, I lined up on some old fat dude with no hair and he would have been 15kg overweight and he was giving away at 7 inches in height to me. I immediately thought I was in for a day out. The plan was to run him off his legs and I would have 4 goals by half time and new opponent.
2 hours laters after copping the mother of all hidings from this guy, I learned that lesson.

Same thing happened in the pool for me. Guy was a whale, but bloody hell he had some VO2 capacity! Felt like saying, ok, lets go out on the bike and then go for a run.

Don't care if DMac had 15 lip rings, as long as he plays his part well, then all good.

MORWELL'S AFL draftee Dean McDonald admitted while he felt confident of being selected he was shocked to be taken so high in last week's draft.
``I was watching the phantom draft and it looked like maybe somewhere in the 80s so I was shocked to go at 51,'' McDonald said.
The former Morwell player has traded one Tigers den for another and he said his new teammates at Richmond had made the transition considerably easier.
``Like any kid I guess it's hard to move away from your friends and family but everyone has been really welcoming,'' he said.
``A few of the guys sent me text messages straight away congratulating me and welcoming me to the club so it's been good.''
Having made the move to Melbourne the 18 year-old is currently living with fellow Tigers player Jake King and has already started training with his new club.
``It's way different to the training I've had before there's a lot more to remember,'' he said.
``It's not too bad though we're easing into it at the moment.
``I need to spend some time in the gym and get bigger, that's one thing I've noticed.''
According to McDonald, while he had never actually followed football he knew he wanted to play AFL from the moment he took up the game 10 years ago.
He said his first aim for next year was ``just to get in the side and play a game''.
McDonald spent last year with Gippsland Power in the TAC Cup and previouisly played some senior football in the Gippsland League with Morwell.
Morwell Tigers president Daryl Couling was delighted to see McDonald get picked up.
``He's lightning quick and really exciting to watch, I always thought he had that `X-factor','' Couling said. ``I'm actually a Richmond supporter so I'm very happy.''

This:thumbsu: Who cares re his Tats or family tradition. Give the kid a break and judge him on his football prowess after several seasons.

This kid is gonna suprise. TT and a few boys will be concerned for their spot by about R4 i reckon. Bookmark it. Wet towel record is up for grabs too! Nothing like a bit of competition.

you are so on the money Captain Blood the Wet Record will be manic this year with all this young talent coming through. Contin seems to be leading the charge ATM from all the training reports but some of these new boys could push hard as well.
