McAdam then began to concentrate on cricket and in 2003 represented the Northern Territory Chief Minister's XI, captained by Michael Clarke, in a three day match against the touring Bangladeshis. McAdam, who was a fast bowler, claimed the wickets of Habibul Bashar, Mohammad Ashraful and Javed Omar.

He used to kick footys into bins from range, to think players cant hit the side of barn these days. He sure had skills.

At the end they said ok lets pack up, put the balls away. Adrian who was a good 20-25 meters away from the Otto bin for the balls, doe's a short pass, and dobs the ball into the bin. And he was a pick up in the 100th's.

He never got used to being the main focus. Had've he received Nick Riewoldt like protection he would've been the first forward pocket to kick 100 goals in a season. I'll never forget a saturday game against West Coast where McKenna went all out on him and no matter how frustrated he got the umpire paid nothing. Nada. One of the worst displays of scragging I'd ever seen and not a single whistle.

McAdam had always dreamt of playing AFL, always been a North fan. His favourites were Keith Greig, Ross Glendinning and the Krakouer brothers. "They were an inspiration to a lot of Aboriginal footballers."

Saw him take a mark about 10M outside the 50 one day against Carlton (I think).
Said to my son "Can he kick that far?"
Answer was "Dunno, we'll see."
The ball cleared the ruckman on the goal line by about a metre but was dropping so fast it nearly hit him on the back of his jumper.
We nodded at each other and said, "Exactly that far."
From memory he got five or so that day. Freaky skills and made it look easy.

Was a freak! He'd have even deeper regrets than he's saying probably.
These sort of stories are what players like urqs need to read. All can disappear pretty quickly. Was a ripper though A-Mac!

On the other hand, I recall the day at Vic Park where Gayfer was freed for scragging McAdam early in the game. Once he realised he couldn't get away with scragging, Gayfer was lost at sea, and McAdam kicked 8 IIRC.

Yes, out of the blue the maggots singlehandedly destroyed Micky Gayfers career. He'd been playing that way for every other game he'd ever played for Collingwood.

Does anyone remember McAdam's habit of going back about 40 metres behind the mark?

The other recall I have of that day at Vic Park was him waving the ball in Tony Shaw's face. Very un-North like.

Wouldn't be surprised considering what I was hearing in the crowd that day. Feral doesn't quite cut it.

The mob mentality at Vic Park was something else again. I recall the day Jimmy Krakouer gave Kerrison a smack and broke his nose.....the crowd went berserk, highlighted by a bloke yelling out 'Go back to your own country!' :eek:, and a kid who looked about 10 calling out 'Hang the black man!' :eek::eek:

That happened RIGHT IN FRONT OF ME, as I stood on the gravel of the Vic Park outer, forward pocket down the Dights Falls end leaning on the fence. It was literally within metres of where I was and it was one of the cleanest and quickest punches I've ever seen live. Kerrison stared death in the face that day. I loved Jimmy sticking up for himself. You're right too jacko, the crowd went from feral to whatever's lower down the Darwinian Theory list of developed oraganisms from that. Crazy times they were, but a most memorable win.

Guys with that much talent don't go missing because they get crap all of a sudden. He didn't wanna be a professional footballer. Plain and simple.

It wasn't his 'Be all and end all' . If it were, he would of been a legend of the game.

He got under other fan's skins too.... He had attitude.

Anyone else there that day when a dick head at the Western Oval ran on the ground to attack him? Not much has ever been said about that.

Ahhhhh anyway, he gave us some memories.
 
McAdam was a studio guest on Marngrook a year or two ago, when they filmed live from Alice Springs, and he spoke very fondly of his NMFC days. He also spoke of his deep regret with how his time with our club was cut short, taking full responsibility for it as well. He said his time with the Pies just didn't feel right, as he was a North Melbourne man. He said Arden St felt like home and as such he ended up walking out on the Pies. End of story for his career. Top fella is Adrian, and one who still holds North close to his heart.
