Brenton Sanderson AFC Senior Coach

Only negative I could come up with was, is this a "Matthew Knights" appointment where he told the club what they wanted to hear.

in relation to the list, he was bullish with his assessment. Is that what they wanted to hear as opposed to other coaches who said out list was shit and that gave him the job.

Time will tell I guess.

Sounds good to me, wonder if he'll have a crack at changing Gunstons mind?

I doubt it. He was very strong on the point that if you play at the AFC, you put your heart and soul into it. Based on that, I'd imagine any chats with Gunston will involve two words and two words only.

I liked this.

Hopefully, when opposition coaches talk about the AFC from this day on, instead of saying we're disciplined, well structured and honest, they'll say we're a bunch of pricks who are a pain in the ass to beat.

I want a combination of both.

hahaha, so sick of the 'structured and disciplined' line.

Even people in our staff hate it.

Yep. Looking forward to this. He'd be a less hysterical version of McGuire or Kennett.

Nigel Smart will play Jedi mind tricks with them, where as McGuire and Kennett are nothing more than loudmouth bully boys who cry if they don't get their own way.

I thought Nige answered that pretty well. he said there was a difference between bullish and honest. Obviously to shut down that argument.

No problems with his appointment from me. After listening to him, I could very easily believe he was our first choice for coach.

I Don't disagree with his assessment of the list, obviously there are a few players that will go, and that we need to increase the pressure for spots in the 22 and that will happen naturally. The list is not bad, it is young and inexperienced.

Loved his determination and confidence, as well as that he made it clear he is the senior coach and doesn't need an older coach holding his hand.

And Nigel Smarts one word "no" answer was definitely a highlight.

I didn't get a chance to watch it but can someone please confirm he didn't say "we'll learn from that" once!!!?

It sounded very impressive, can't wait for 2012. Ruthless, efficient, physical, contested ball, high disposal efficiency, not making up the numbers, premierships...Bring it on...

Being the nerd i am, like with Bickleys, i took a few brief notes, sorry if it's all been said before and for the scratchy nature of them! Missed a little bit.

SEN:

-Process started 6-8 weeks ago, this is the job I desired, this was the job I wanted
-Absolutely thrilled to be part of AFC family again, job starts today
-You’ll see a side with great disposal efficiency, a side that’s well panned, and a side that’s ruthless
-Bullish about the sides list, success will be a very quick spike at the FC, I’ve seen how quickly change can occur
-A lot of players under 22 and you’ll see some improvement very quickly
-Geelong in a great spot, but my job is with the Adelaide football club
-Spoke to CS yesterday who’s a quality individual, he was thrilled for me, mentioned about staying, but there’s a conflict there and I want to get started straight away
-I’m a determined individual, had setbacks my whole career, I know what I want to do, and I want to coach the AFC to premiership success

Ok back to Adelaide now:

Q responses

-Won’t comment on individuals today, but will catch up with list managers. I have some strong opinions, but it will be a team effort. I’ll continually refer to the AFC as a team, and I’ll be involving as many people as I can when I make key discussions
- TRIGG: Brendon was the unanimous choice of our panel. We had taken a long list from 30 odd names to 10-12 initial interviews, through to 4 on a short list. Pretty simple summary of what happened. Brenton, as far as articulation for a vision, and the profession al qualities and experiences he’s had, stood out. Really impressed by the resilience from Brenton, with a young list, we need that. The bloke beside me has had to work and scrap for everything he’s gotten in his football life. Hard little unit in 1991, professional qualities that really shone through. He’s packaged it up and done the job, he’s ready and it stood out to us very, very well.
-TRIGG: To make it clear – We didn’t miss anybody, others dropped off, we did not miss anybody. We were very clear about Brenton early, and crystal clear at the time of the presentation, we then felt we didn’t need to be rushed. Determined to do it properly. Conducted final interview Sunday, by Sunday lunchtime we had our decision.
-BS: long journey, few setbacks along the way. Can empathise with current player so you need to be transparent, going to draft kids born in the mid 90’s, it’s scary, but you have to be able to relate to this generation.
-I have a few things on strong on – The non negotiables. I want to coach a club which is physical, and those that will do anything for the team. Initially instill fundamentals that can turn us into a premiership team.
-Admired AFC from afar, competitiveness has dropped off the last 12 months. We will be having a hard preseason.
-Lots of ways to measure improvement. Easy to be shallow and say we won 7 last year, we win 8 this year and we’ve improved. There more ways to look at it than that as I’ve presented to the board
-I want to deliver on a gameplan that doesn’t just make the 8, not just happy in the top 4, but delivers premierships
-Be foolish for me to come with a GFC playbook and put an Adelaide sticker over the top. There’s a certain way you have to play to be successful in this comp and I know how that is.
-On Tips: TRIGG – Contracted to us for next year, expect him to be here next year. I/club haven’t surrendered to a notion of him going. This all popped up last time. We want and expect him to stay like every other.
-Back to BS – Really honoured to come back to the club which gave him a chance. Knows this town lives/breathes football and craves success. Determined to make this club really successful…again
-Tippett incredible talent, got a lot of aura. Seen him do things which are just awesome. Key member of the AFC
-Have to have a lot of trust in the people around me. Be foolish to comment today on the areas I’m not aware of.
-Really comfortable in my position, confidant I have the skills required, at the same time I was innovative and creative people around me
-Haven’t had a chance to speak to other ass coaches, will meet over next couple of days
-First phonecall was to Bicks, it was tremendous, such a quality individual and will be critical to our success. Mentioned in my presentation that If I were successful I’d love to work with bicks and have him stay involved.
-I’m very set in my ways in regards to what I want from a football team. Come from a club which demands excellence which can be confrontational. But we live on our word and deliver on our promise, and that will come through with me.
-One thing I’ll bring here – If you are involved with this club, you give your heart and soul to it
-Geelong group – You demanded things of each other, you were hard on each other
-Some exciting play during bick’s time, if I was a young player at the AFC, I’d be looking forward to pre season and an exciting year

Top work Stevie :thumbsu:

JP Sauce - I expect it will be on several websites eventually. If not the AFC website, it will end up on several news websites.

If I'd been a few minutes earlier to finding the press conference link I would have recorded the audio

Thanks Stabby. :thumbsu:

Sounds really promising. I like the key words he has used 'physical and contested' in particular. I think you will see a more dour Crows team in the next 18 months.

Interested in the term 'bullish'. I assume he thinks the squad has great promise then?

Some others mentioned that he refused to answer several questions. Any idea what the questions were about?

You're welcome :)

The questions he refused to answer were on making predictions for whether we'd make the finals next year, and about coaching assistants other than Bickley, since he hasn't spoken to them yet (only shook their hands this morning). He also said he didn't want to talk about inidividual trades as he wants to involve everyone at the club in making those decisions and hasn't as of yet had a chance to sit down and have those discussions.

In short, he refused to answer the questions he is not yet in a position to answer, but answered everything else directly. Very nice :thumbsu:

No problem, echo a lot of people here when i say it was very impressive. He was the guy i wanted (With Burns also) so i'm really excited at all of this.

Just as shame we have to wait so long until they get back into it!
