OP makes a valid point. Finished reading Gary Linnell's 'Football Ltd' and Stremski's famous 'Kill for Collingwood'.

At 1 point in the 70's, Hawthorn's zone had a catchment of 180 k juniors, conversely South who had the smallest zone, had 1/4 of that size. Hawthorn are an abject failure as a FC without the assistance of zoning.

Collingwood are an abject failure as a [sic] FC post WWII. Without the ability to buy up any players they want, and challenge for GFs they didn't win, they would be decidedly middle table, like the Cats.

My definition of an abject failure is having more wooden spoons than premierships. Your signature makes it hard for me to take whatever you say seriously.

Accurate thread is accurate.

Dawks - inequities in zones = 80 years of failure

We'd still have this little beauty.

Going from mediocre VFA team straight into the VFL was never going to be easy, especially in the complete absence of financial assistance or recruitment controls. We needed a hero to pull us up by our own bootstraps, and along came John Kennedy. We've never been the same since.
The Hawks actually had to work hard for our success, unlike the majority of Collingwood's flags from the knickerbocker era.

Thanks for the heads up, should have changed the sig at Xmas.

Falchoon ended this thread 260 odd posts back.

why isnt this thread pointing the finger more at the filthy club just north of the city that wear blue - the club who had their former president appointed vfl president, who then went about installing this zoning method for the selfish reasons of benefitting his filthy former club.

bendigo, the biggest & best country league in the state is given to that flithy club and they go about winning 6 flags directly from the cheating scumbag vfl president.

Maybe this is the reason they havent even commented on this thread.

Big bad Hawthorn. Bullied the VFL and the other clubs into allowing them to take the best country league as a zone. Pure offensive St Kilda/Geelong revisionism. I suppose using this logic, every flag won before country zoning was due to the allocated metropolitan zone and the ability to pay as much money as a club could afford to lure country players. Nothing to do with club infrastructure, systems, coaching staff etc.

Funny how St Kilda was pretty much shit under both systems.

I just wish Gary Ablett senior had stayed instead of going bush before settling at Geelong. Imagine the whinging then.... we would have probably won eight straight.

St.Kilda had Ballarat - Lockett, Frawley are two off the top of my head...

You have to remember, Hawthorn turned from a soft easybeat in the 50's to Kennedy's Commando's in the early 60's. This changed the culture of the club. If you wanted to work hard and be part of the team, you were given the chance - look at Dipper, he played 1 season, left, came back, played a fair few reserve games and then played 200+ VFL games and won 5 flags. Was this luck or was it Dippers determination combined with the clubs culture that made him the player he was?

I'm not disputing some of the talent we got but to suggest 9 or 10 flags were won thanks to our zone is pathetic.

Hey Falchoon - Seen Open Mike recently?

Russell Greene and Aaron Hamill both confirmed that the culture at the Hawks and Carlton was one of people out to do their best and the Saints was of blokes who were happy to train hungover.

Comments from Saintsational Forum:
"what a nice bloke (Greene)...the thing that stood out was how he described the difference between us and Hawthorn at the time. worlds apart....one club if he had stayed at would have shortened his career considerably..the other a professional unit that not only prolonged his career but improved him as a footballer. Spoke of players turning up drunk or with hangovers to training and playing the next day......I sort of feel a bit cheated now going to the games during that era knowing this, putting up with so many losses, thinking it was the norm and thinking the others clubs had it over us simply by monetary means.
He explained how he was shocked to see Hawthorn players crying over close games , he had never seen such commitment before then."

But I guess your Bell Curve can't allow for a shit culture. :)
