GREAT INTERVIEW

Chris mentioned-
They planned to have a slow start this season

They should have put the game away early, no disrespect to WB

Stated that Tim tel Joel to apologize for mistake he made re comments about rift with players.

Hunt understands the situation. Talked about internally.

Orren played well and West was given a rest

Talk about Menzel back in seconds very soon (next week)

Talks about looking at inside midfielders from other clubs (Boak?) and others

Contested ball is an issue, they were 10 up in the last quarter

They queried if this was because of a change in game plan. Perhaps they were standing off the ball. He mentioned that disposal efficiency was important and a hard ball get under pressure with a bad disposal was not the way to go.

He mentioned that he did not think that Duncan, Christo and Vardy were in the best half way through last year but changed his mind

He said that there was room in the team for Motlop and Varcoe

We were missing outside speed and need Varcoe, Menzel? and Christo in. This may have something to do with the new style mentioned

He spoke about the importance of the players leaving the club in a good way. Players have played for less to be in a winning culture. Take J Corey a star with heaps of awards and premierships.

All players over 30 have to consider retiring at the right time. It was important that they taught the younger players during there time at the club

He mentioned that Enright could play on for more years to come.

They had to watch their list management because of these pending retirements.

Scarlett may not be done at the end of the year

Long interview. He did say that he felt at their best they were capable of beating any other side in the comp. Not over yet.

It is reported that Scott said Menzel has been trainig the house down for the last month and that he will play in the seconds next week?
I did not realise he was that far advanced.
Great news:p:D

because they don't think they can go hard and last 26 weeks.

totally spot on Turbo IMO. There is a stat somewhere that referred to our team having played some 18 odd finals games since 07. That means that as of this year 10 odd blokes have played an extra season over the last 5 years as opposed to everyone else.

That is massive. So i fully expect so peaking to be applied here.

And there is just no way you can be 100% up all the time. Simply not possible.

Scott is terrific with the media-always outsmarts them but 'slow start to the season' is almost too much.

1 , And risk a spot in the 8?

2 , Were all our missed shots planned?

3 , What about the lack of discipline?

1
Risk is relative. There is risk in going hard at the ball , ask Marc Murphy but if you don't risk it you will not win big games etc
Train too hard and no ones left to play , not enough and no ones fit enough to win.
Think of it like a race horse timing his run. Yes he may well get done if another blocks his late run but if he go's to early he will not last the straight , and if the right horse times his run and does it right...he is unbeatable. We have a list that still can win the Flag if and only if we time our run to the best of our capabilities. Other sides may be able to harder longer , but we can go hard enough at the right time and we have the experience and players to win in Sept.

2
Do they plan to miss. Not sure if they practice enough but thats also part of "1" . The sports science guys don't like them kicking too much. For mine , if you miss those shots then what the hell is the good of being fit.

3
Which ones. Some early examples of that this year. Was there some last night?

What is the point when we can't even stick in the 8 though?

You never know. We could get a major injury/ies later in the season that could see us lose a few more games and miss the 8. And we'll be thinking "ah those wins would have been handy". Prepare*now, and maybe you won't have to face possible consequences later.

I get it. They don't have to play at 100% at the start of the season. But we should be able to at least get over the line v teams like North, or get beaten by less than 50pts v Adelaide. There's a line.

Bartel has missed some he would usually get lately as well.

If I was to be picky, then*Chappy punching Guthrie last night.

But I was talking about the season as a whole. A lot of our players have been a bit feral.

I am guessing it is not a mental thing that they have decided to lose as many games as they have.

There would be a training load in place designed to peak in a few months. Im sure the fading away of the top 4 is not going to plan but its not something that can be just turned on at this stage and we must continue the course.

But I was talking about the season as a whole. A lot of our players have been a bit feral.

We have arguably already endured the injuries you mention (Varcoe, Menzel, Wojcinski, even Scarlett/Kelly and perhaps to a lesser extent Vardy and Simpson) and thus we have had a less than optimal 22 running out in the park all year. The Crows 50 pt example you mentioned; I don't think that was "planned" as such. Even when we were at our peak (bar one instance I can remember) we struggled against the Crows, especially at AAMI. With our relatively poor record, hostile crowd and the form the Crows were in, we were always going to be pushing shit uphill over there. Add to that the volume of sub 50 gamers running around and a general fitness base not quite at the same level as the Crows at that stage and 50 pts doesn't seem to illogical (in hindsight of course).

That said, the experience the kids are obtaining this year will be priceless in the long term, but the sides that we have fielded this season, at this point in time are not what I would call best 22.

Another case in point: do you think that should we make finals, we'll have Stringer and T Hunt starting in the guts with Selwood?

Scotty is on the money here and I have complete faith in his modus operandi

really feel Hunt is just the type of player made for finals. He's tough as nails and was able to keep Griffin in check for most of the game. Still got 25 touches but they weren't damaging because unlike Ling...he has the speed to keep with these fast midfielders which was a luxury we didn't have beforehand.
It will mean he goes to the most explosive mid and that's going to be invaluable in a final.

Corey, Selwood, Kelly, Hunt with Bartel and Christensen rotating across could begin to build a nice partnership by seasons end.

It will most likely look be Selwood, Kelly, Hunt, Boak and Christensen/Bartel rotating in 2013 with Corey playing more of a burst role from the bench.

I have no doubt at all that T Hunt will play an important role for us in finals if we get there this year (and in the future!) but my point was more about how we will set up personel wise. As the year rolls on there's every chance that a few youngsters will become fixtures like last year. The amount of game time the youngsters are getting bodes well for the future as well as Scott's major paradigm of flexibility and depth that he is championing, but at the business end, I doubt the side will look the same as it was for parts of Friday night and most of the year so far

oh yeh of course maxy.

I would even go as far to say that Scott has been deliberately resting veterans as he knows they will be needed in the 2nd half of the year.

Well in terms of gameplan our start this year wasnt that much different to this year. The difference is that we were winning the close games as opposed to losing, which probably comes down to how many youngsters we are playing with now. We could have beaten Dockers and Collingwood while last year in a similar span of time could easily have lost to the Saints, Dockers, Collingwood and Carlton.

Obviously its not a good place to be in in terms of winning the flag but we start pushing hard soonish, start getting some players back, who knows.

We have also traveled alot.

another bizarre factor is we seem to be playing teams when they are in form whereas our contenders a playing those same sides when they are clearly flat.

WOW.

How good is CS. i reckon this bloke will have a statue next to Frank, Bomber, Cookie and Wells by the time he is done - and that won't be for a while.

His vision, presuming it comes off, may well plant him as the next Malthouse, Barassi, Jeans, Hafey, Matthews type as a coach - but he could be the most inventive and creative of the lot of them.

Given that he is taking a champion team and seemingly working for now and the future concurrently using the list management, draft, player development, free agency and on field tactics to Geelong advantage.

To meet the criticism head on and embrace it and turn it to inspiration and positive energy as a 2nd year coach is remarkable.

I just find it amazing that people have been jumping off about small picture things (myself included on occasion) when after listening to that interview you can see the clear and detailed manor in which he goes about his business.

HoW lucky are we to have him...
