Melbourne vs The World: The Jack Viney Story

1st thing wrong with that is GC will not get pick 1, GWS will

It's likely whoever wins their game will get it. You're right it's more likely to be GC. That's why I said it was an assumption.

And also it would killing my interesting, time-wasting scenario-fest. Because the mini-draft has the potential to play a real role if GWS do come 17th.

Edit - original post meant to have 'assuming GC finishes last'.

Not sure why MELB would prefer scenario 2 to 3?

Surely they'd want to get Viney with a second round pick more than anything?

Bit touchy there.

I started a new thread just for Viney talk, as opposed to having it spread out over two or three mock drafts. If I wanted to stop the discussion, I'd just delete it all.

One of the intriguing bits of the puzzle for forthcoming draft - definitely deserves a thread.

Giants, suns, port and dogs fans will be watching with interest - whether dees need to use a top round pick to snare viney, or whether they'd risk him going to another club will impact three or four clubs up the top of the list.

Basically, my thoughts on the Viney situation are this...

- Neither Gold Coast or GWS will nominate him. He isn't a top 5 pick, so nominating him serves no purpose. And I just don't believe teams will go out of their way to spite another club. Especially not one of the new clubs, who will likely be doing a lot of trading in the next few years. They'll be looking to create plenty of good will.

- Melbourne would however take him, if nominated. They've put too much time and effort into him. Rightly or wrongly, 'missing out' on Viney would not look good - regardless of who they got instead. After losing Scully, they need someone to build around, and a tough little F/S is a dream come true for the Demons. And is there anything supporters love more, than a F/S pick? Having the extra first round picks just makes it easier to do so.

So really, I don't think it'll matter though. There will be much better players available, so Viney shouldn't come into calculations for the first two picks. The Suns, Giants and Demons will all be happy. The other 15 teams? Maybe not so much.

You raise some good valid points here. As I previously mentioned other clubs may be risking too much to call Melbourne out on this.

Knightmare rates him top 3 in this draft yet you say "There will be much better players available".

In reality, we won't know for 5-7 years how to rate this draft, or the players in it. Viney appears to be somewhere in the 5-15 range according to most keen observers.

Sheedy has already done massive damage to GWS by signing Scully on a $1m a year deal for 6 years, signing his dad for an extra $100k+ a year (also counting toward their salary cap) also caused untold damage, the board were furious when they found out.

I highly doubt that the GWS heirachy will allow Sheedy to dabble into his ongoing hatred again, it's cost the club too much already.

Do you honestly believe that GWs will let Sheedy will use the #1 pick on Viney?

Well played... except Sheedy didn't do any of that shit.

Sheedy's a big talker and he's always willing to give anyone a quote but Silvagni's the list manager and, as Sheedy was saying at the time, Allen and Silvagni were the ones going around trying to sign uncontracted players. Sheedy didn't have anything to do with it. Phil Scully was signed to work under Silvagni and Allen, so again, not Sheedy.

Sheedy's been pretty clear the whole time that he doesn't have list management rights at GWS - he tells them the type of player he thinks he needs and they figure out the best way to get them, the same as any club these days.

If that helps you sleep at night then sure, that's exactly what happened.

The reality is that Sheedy doesn't operate like that, he takes control of everything within the club, he did the same at Essendon and he's doing the same with GWS. Sheedy had his grubby fingers all over the Scully deal (pun intended :)).
The other evidence is that only a delusional fool would offer a player like Scully $1m over 6 years instead of spending their big bucks on a very good top of the line player, and to add his old man into the salary cap adds to the fun times.

Also, Sheedy is a lot of things, but clear aint one of them ;)

Cool, you've convinced me. After all, who needs evidence to the contrary when you can just make stuff up?

Wait... Trades board... never mind.

Yeah, you're absolutely right. A player who isn't evnen in the top 3 midfielders isn't on $1m a year for six years with his old man's $100k+ salary isn't counted towards their salary cap.

I just made all the stuff up, you got me.

I've always thought the best thing to do would be for Melbourne to strike a deal with GWS for a mini draft pick (1st Scully compo pick for mini pick 1) and have GWS guarantee that they wouldn't nominate Viney, allowing him to fall to the second round. Of course GC would still have the option to nominate Viney but I doubt they rate him as high as pick 2, I also don't think they're out to purposefully screw another club, unlike Sheeds and Gubby.

*I've just noticed this scenario has been mentioned earlier in the thread:oops:

It would be utterly, utterly hilarious to see Viney running around for the Bulldogs, and Melbourne end up with another Jack Watts or Cale Morton.
About as funny as seeing Essendon end up with another Dyson Heppell or Kepler Bradley...

Gettit

I would be disgraced if the club didn't take Viney. Some things are more important than getting what some people perceive to be a slightly better prospect.

That said I don't think GWS or GC will bid, they have a lot to lose (Viney could walk after 2 years and they miss out on Whitfield) and little to gain... they annoy Melbourne.

It'd more be to stop Melbourne getting very lucky. Melbourne's not really out to screw anyone here. They just happen to have a "lucky" combination of a good father/son in a year that they're doing pretty badly. Unless you're arguing that Melbourne is tanking to screw everyone, Melbourne's situation is pretty much an artifact of the rules.

No one has really mentioned the possiblilty that Melbourne won't finish 16th on the ladder? Real possibility given our draw for the rest of the season.

If we beat Port, GC and GWS over the remaining 7 games and snag an upset against say Freo or North, in all likelyhood we could finish above both Port Adelaide and the Bulldogs. If this happened I can very well seeing us taking Viney with our first round pick at 5. In the event the ladder stays how it is I personally can't see GC or GWS bidding on Viney unless they rate him at that posistion, GC is the more likely to bid given their list is short of top end inside midfielders but they would have to give up a more highly rated youngster and I don't think it will happen.

I honestly hope Melbourne pull their finger out and win a couple more games, moving above Port and/or the Bulldogs on the ladder, so the question becomes a non-issue ..........

I wish for once we can have a season where after round 10 we are not looking forward to the draft

I wish for once we can have a season where after round 10 we are not looking forward to the draft

I do too & I think all Melbourne supporters have felt this way for the past 5 years but when you constantly stink it up on the ground we have little else to look forward to.

Hopefully next year!!!!!

Wishing and hoping in the Drafts and Trading board won't get it done sivart.

Pull your finger out and buy a membership!

I buy two premium memberships (for the mrs and myself) which total over a $1,000 a year champ. I go to most games as well so I do my part. So please spare me your bullshit
