Looking at the draw GWS have a very winnable game against Melbourne in Canberra next week, I don't see us beating the Hawks, Carlton or Crows so we may end up with the No1 pick after all.

On the couch tonight they talked about Essendons lack of midfielders and how Caddy would be in their sight but with Daniher taking their top pick they would need to trade to a team like Melbourne to get a pick low enough to secure him. Melbournes first pick is likely to be number 3 so they use that on Daniher and then the no 7-9 pick on Caddy. Seems fair but ideally I hope Josh stays.

Yeah me too, I hope we dont give up pick 2, or Sam Day in this.

I think about 500-700k would be fair, considering Rischa and Brennan are probably on about 500ish?

If we get pick #1, we'll use it to get Whitfield.

Pick #2, we'll be trading it to GWS for a mini-draft pick.

We won't be using either of those to get a key position play. They're far too high.

Maybe a combination of later picks to get a mature body.

If you think about it Jaeger would of been the No1 pick in the upcoming draft not Whitfield, we can guarentte ourselves the No1 pick again in 2013 and free up a spot for another kid to stay on the roster for a year to prove himself (assuming that the mini draft pick doesn't count against the contracted player count).

That would be the idea, though there are a few issues since I made that post which I've come to realize.

The point of difference is that last year, O'Meara was the clear stand-out. He was always going to be ranked first given his talent, no matter how the other kids like Whitfield improved.

For the remaining mini-draft selections however, there is no clear cut player who is in that same type of position.

Take Martin for example, who is the guy we would likely go for if we used pick 2 in the MD. Martin is a top 5 pick for sure, but next years crop is looking so good that you cannot say for sure that he would be a lock for the #1 place. In fact, at this point, I would say it would be unlikely. There are a couple of kids who have not nominated for the Mini Draft and eligible next year that could seriously come on (Tom Boyd comes to mind), which would mean we would have traded our pick 2 this year for maybe pick 4-5 next year. Do we take that risk? Knowing how good some of the youngsters coming through are, and bank on our own development into Martin? Or should we use pick #2 this year to get the best available kid right away?

Also still not sure what the deal is with Jaeger. They are not part of the official list, but I don't think they're rookies either. Some sort of place in the middle.

From what I can remember, and I am probably wrong, he does not become officially listed until next year, but has been given special permission to train with the club in 2012. Could he maybe be registered as just a NEAFL player in 2012?

If we can get Tippett without losing Day or Lynch, watch those 2 boys excel, they would love having that third big Tippett to take the best defender and then have to play on the 2nd and 3rd defenders.

I can tell you right now that if we have to give up Day to get Tippett, we won't be getting him. Simple as that. Otherwise you're right on the money. Day will be licking his lips at the thought of lining up on someone who has yet to be nominated AA.

Don't mean to intrude but was curious whether you guys would enter the mini draft again.

Comes down to whether you rate Martin (another Harley Bennell wouldn't hurt) higher than Toumpas (with his hip problems) and Grundy (with your abundance in rucks already)?

Living the majority of my life on the GC I have seen every major team playing in it's national code fail bar the Titans and they're not looking too healthy. The sporting public are a fickle bunch and I seriously believe that an AFL team should be on the coast. Therefore in saying that your team is in a precarious position. I believe that is should be a combination of using your three picks that you have to use and using what ever players you trade or other picks to bring in some bigger older bodies to get some more Wins. I have heard some commentators say for the Suns to identify their top 6 young players and the rest is fair game. I'm not of the mind to be leaning so far that way. I know that a lot of you will say that bringing in older players will stunt the growth and take away games from your younger players but you can also look at it as an opportunity to show and teach your boys some of the standards set amongst some of the other teams. In might seem folly for me for your team to succeed being a Lions supporter but I grew up on the coast and played all my junior footy there and would have loved to have a team of my own to follow. But people will get tired of watching a team that struggles to win only a few games a season.

I'm probably alone on this one, but I would love for us to be looking at Cloke. If Tippet's worth 750k, then Cloke is easily worth 1 mill+. Big body, ridiculously big engine, amazing dukes. And when his heart is in it he's literally unstoppable.

I also am of the school that we need a gorilla forward, so given that they are so rare and seemingly the only decent ones that are gettable are Tipp and Cloke (I don't rate Q Lynch), you'd have to look at a 'risky' type, like Scott Gumbleton on the cheap. Even an Aaron Edwards (who isn't big but has great hands and work ethic) or a Tyrone Vickery.

In the highly unlikely but would be cool to get basket would have to be a Rhys Stanley.

I also think we should push really hard to try and get Hamish McIntosh or Jonathon Griffin. With Goldstein and Sandilands being their clubs clear number one respectively, surely we could entice one of them away?

Cloke already has a inflated sense of his own worth, his behaviour / body language since the Pies stopped negotiations has all the hall marks of a petulant child, he clear puts myself in front of the team. I wouldn't touch him for $500,000

Aaron Edwards isn't big enough to be our power forward.

I know from experience (don't mean for that to sound arrogant) that when you lose the emotional investment with your club, your football really suffers. You're right I agree with you about his body language. But for all but one of his seasons in the AFL he has been switched on and committed. For example, have a look at last years GF. I agree there's a risk he may never truly invest again, but I'd argue that that's unlikely and once he pulls on the jumper of his new club he will be 'back'. Also I just want to add, he does love the GC and has holidayed there at times. Not sure of his thoughts on the GC post his beating though.

Also agree that Aaron Edwards would be too small to play the gorilla role, but he'd at least take the number one defender. And if he didn't, I think he'd run amuck. I think he'd be of value. Certainly better than Brad Green (yuck).

We somehow cancel the nomination of Daniher (not sure we can - he's been basically nominated since GWS looked at him for a U17 pick last year)... to trade our pick ~15-20 for their pick ~7-9 (will they even have a pick around there?) which we can then use on Caddy...

for what gain for them, exactly? Purely so they have a hope that neither GC nor GWS take him?

Or us? Losing one of the best 3-4 kids in this draft for one of the best 6-7 in last year's ?

Ah, sorry, sort of see where you're coming from then - I can't see us with pick 9 (12th on the ladder); pick 10 will be as low as we go.
And even then, unless time travel is invented in the next 3 months, it isn't going to happen - F/S nominations are done before trade week; that first rounder will be locked in.

It is far fetched and that is the nature of the media, i guess it comes down to whether Essendon really want him.
