Play Nice Still no evidence against Melbourne re: tanking

That's a legitimate concern irrespective of how this pans out from here.

Schwab has his faults but he did okay following on from the EnergyWatch debacle. We'll be needing those powers of influence in even greater measure the next time we go searching for sponsorship dollars.

Right now things can *mostly* be pushed back under the carpet - Connolly and Schwab resign in disgrace, new cleanskin board takes over, Melbourne lose their #4 pick this year, Melbourne lose their second round pick next year, no massive financial penalties but a severe enough draft hit to be an example when the AFL goes around every other club and says 'Hi, anything you feel you need to get off your chest before we start asking questions ?'.

On the other hand, if Melbourne contest a penalty in court then we all find just how deep this rabbit hole goes.

Melbourne are being done for stupidity more than anything. The AFL dangled the priority pick carrot, which placed teams down the bottom of the ladder in an awkward position. We can argue about the degree of tanking, but all teams would have been aware of the huge incentive to lose. The AFL didn't really care, they wanted the bottom clubs to get the extra pick. But Melbourne did such a hatchet job that the AFL have been forced to address the issue.

Or the AFL Commission reviews the investigation, finds no players were ever instructed to take the field and play dead and says "see, we told you that tanking does not exist in the AFL."

Faced with a dangling carrot these guys colluded to cheat the greengrocer.

They cheated, cheated wilfully: surely the Melbourne Footy Club must be treated accordingly.

Strip MFC of its licence & give it to the Taswegians.

Haha you wish mate - might as well give up your agenda because we're here and we're never going away. Keep banging your head against that wall though.

You're still fixated with the idea that the coaches being told by the club executive to make sure the team loses is unimportant.

Regrettably for your position, the fact is that there was a meeting where coaches were told to stop winning or else has already been leaked to the press, presumably to make it clear to participants that they have no chance of keeping a code of silence going.

This showed intent, and intent is the difference between list management and tanking.

They know the date. They know the place. They know the attendees.

And at least some of those attendees are talking to the AFL.

And the fact that certain club donors are alleged to have made donations conditional on the club winning less than a particular number of games ... if those donors were reassured in advance that the club was going to do that, and also made bets based on that, then we're possibly beyond tanking and into match fixing.

And there is still the backups of the email to go through.

true but surely you don think the afl will go fwd with this without a body of evidence? the afl have lawyers too you know.

Yeah but they are all Melbourne supporters ;)

So many threads, such little use of the overused suffix 'gate'.

Surely this scandal is now gateworthy, no?

Brockgate? Baileygate? Demongate? Tankgate?

I think tankgate looks and sounds good. Clearly related to the issue and can incorporate other tanking teams if the scandal should widen to include other teams.

Lock in tankgate Eddie.

There is no shortage of intensely stupid people on this earth, nor sheep. Melbourne won't be penalised, and I will be looking for an apology from all those who have claimed we will be, though I won't get it.

I'm more interested if the MFC can sue those claiming these unproveable claims in the media. I'd like to see C. Wilson living in a caravan park by the beginning of next season.

Calling people stupid, or sheep for having a different opinion than your own is pretty immature. In fact, I hope you are ready to come back here and apologise for your own comments since you seem so concerned with taking the high road.

Let's say the AFL determines Melbourne didn't tank.

What becomes of those MFC figures that have provided evidence saying they did?

Unless they've lied, nothing. If there interpretation is that Melbourne tanked you can't hold that against them. I can't see the AFL determining that Melbourne didn't tank. Only not finding enough evidence to determine they did. A possibility which also seems unlikely now. Though it's possible the investigation could be compromised by the media frenzy. If they start reporting falsified reports they could create a case for Melbourne to say that the case hasn't been handled properly.

Might not be serious. His or her avatar appears to be that of the Iraqi information minister.

Are you saying that the AFL won't find enough evidence to determine that Melbourne tanked in 2009?

Not at all. I just said it's a possibility. And probably one of the only two ways Melbourne could escape penalties. But it's unlikely. The only other way I saw possible would be if the media interferes with the investigation and compromises it.

I'm more interested in defending the integrity of the MFC. If people want to make claims as Wilson has, which defame the club and effect its image, I expect EVIDENCE to back it up.

Yes, those without evidence are simply jumping on the media bandwagon when there is nothing to back it up. Get a clue.

I agree 100%.

...

Well, this is awkward. What do we talk about now?

So the AFL are investigating something without any real evidence, and based solely on the defamatory claims of Caroline Wilson?

Well, someone on the Melbourne board realised if you spell "tanking" backwards and drop the g you get "niknat" smells like a conspiracy.

Jokes on them, it's actually 'NicNat'.

Common misconception.
