I would have preferred full time employment and ones with a track record of coaching but they might prove they are up to it.

When words like massive, awesome and huge are used to describe appointments of 2 rookie part time coaches, it's getting carried away.

Those adjectives have been used because it's a surprise that we were able to sign such phenomenal players from another club as part-time coaches. From what I've seen nobody's started saying they'll be a godsend, but these two are big names who clearly chose to join the 'Dogs - that is massive.

Agreed, the other youngster I'm impressed by is Butane. There was a youngster, a nephew of "Bottles" Greenwood who used to post, perhaps still does, can't remember his moniker. The club's future is in good hands if they are representative of our young supporters.

Is it wrong to be excited about a coach? Especially ones with the pedigree of these two? Maybe they'll be indifferent teachers. Maybe they'll be the difference in a rise up the ladder. I'm happy with these appointments.

They may not be players anymore, but I can guarantee you we weren't the only club vying for their services. Surely if you caught wind of an AA and dual premiership forward, as well as a 2x AA and 3x premiership backman, and you had a list of young and inexperienced KPPs, you would chase them in some regard - the fact that we managed to lure them across is a coup for our club. The fact that they're "old mates" of Macca's is a good thing; these type of people are the right sort of contacts we want a senior coach to have, and the fact that Macca being our head coach is attracting people involved with a team who won three premierships in five years can only be seen as a good thing.
Hansen played 78 games in his career and was not named an AA player; he was in my opinion a good ordinary player. I'm happy with his appointment, but clubs wouldn't be chasing him as much as they would've been Mooney and Scarlett - I don't see it as as much of a coup. I know nothing of Mooney, Scarlett and Hansen as coaches, I have no opinion at all - but to be able to attract this calibre of player is a breath of fresh air for a struggling club. Maybe I and other supporters have taken liberty with the use of our adjectives, but honestly, who are you to tell us how to use them? For most supporters this is fairly exciting and a good step towards our future development. As a passionate and optimistic Bulldogs supporter I feel as though I'm allowed to be excited and view our appointments as coups when they're as high-profile as these guys are.
I'm happy to disagree with you, as I am anybody - but your posts tend to degrade into an attack on the person rather than their argument, as that last line begins to. Feel free to counter my point of view, I'm always happy to hear other opinions and engage in constructive discussion; I just don't believe it needs to degrade to being anything against the person you're arguing against.

I think this is a great get by the dogs. They're not 'coaches' per se, they won't be sitting in the box and involved on game day, so I don't know why some are querying their ability to 'coach'. The benefit of having these guys will be more about developing the younger guys about actually playing the game on a minute-to-minute basis on game day. Both of them were great readers of the game and were key parts of larger forward/back line structures which proved to be very successful over their time. As good as a guy like Scarlett was, the success of the back line he played in was also due to the overall structure, and I imagine B-Mac would be wishing to get the defensive unit to work in similar ways.

I wouldn't refer to Scarlett as 'shy', I think he just has absolutely no interest in the spotlight or the media. He is all about winning and had little time for anyone who wasn't of the same attitude. Harry Taylor said that Scarlett barely said a word to him when he first arrived until he had somewhat 'proven' himself, and once that had happened, Scarlo took him under his wing and Taylor knew he would throw himself under a bus for him if need be. All of the Geelong backmen, including even the new guys like Cam Guthrie, have basically said they have been blessed to play/train with and learn from him and that he is quite active in that role. I think this is something he embraced in the latter part of his career.

I don't see how this could be anything but good. At the very worst I still think the young guys will be able to take away positives out of spending time with two guys who have seen it all and done it all.

Thanks for sharing this mate. Most of us Dogs supporters have looked on with a mixture of envy and awe at the incredible record of your team over the past 6 or so years. If some of that magic rubs off on us via the input of McCartney, Mooney, Scarlett and King I'll be a happy man.

Go to your user profile and look up the last 20 or 30 entries you've posted here on BigFooty - every single one of them is negative. Not most of them - every single one!! Even the posts relating to soccer are negative. It's bloody hard to take anything you say seriously when you've got that attitude. It seems to me that you appear on here only to ridicule or criticise those who express an opinion that supports the club or it's players.

Some are never happy no matter what. Guess you cant please everyone, but most see picking up mooney and scarlo as bonues for the experience they can pass on and teach our young players.. At least they will be learning from guys who have tasted success a few times. Thats got to be a good thing

I won't be kissing his backside but I have some sympathy for ErnieSigley on this occasion. We need a few well-argued dissenting views to make this a worthwhile forum. In fact I reckon many of you taking exception to his posts probably have underlying views that are not too far from Ernie's. It's just the way he expresses those views that gets everyone offside (including me sometimes). It's immaterial whether that's his natural manner or he does it that way just to shit-stir.

I'm happy to hear of the appointments and their CVs are good. I think it's a positive thing for the club. It's claim to being "massive" (I wouldn't call it that yet) is that it's a good PR move and may give us some further short-term credibility as a club where things are starting to happen. @Kidkenobi's testimony is also reassuring (thanks!). However until we see how well it actually works and what results it gets, we shouldn't be hailing it as a master stroke.

It's probably the smartest thing McCartney's done in his time at the club. Just maybe Roughead COULD make it down back if he takes everything Scarlett tells him (it won't be a lot, so it's probably all quality). Best thing about it is that if we hired one or both of them full time I'm sure they would have asked for decent coin (more money to use elsewhere).

Mind you, now having basically 3 guys advising the forwards (I'd consider Hansen having more of an impact in his role on the younger forwards given his history) may make it confusing for them....

If playing careers are completely meaningless as you seem to infer, why did Essendon install Hird as coach, Brisbane with Voss and Collingwood (and almost North) with Buckley. Obviously highly rated players and especially highly rated leaders are in demand as coaches. So, is it really a stretch to call getting Mooney and Scarlett (both of which are extremely highly rated as both leaders and players) a coup?

And seriously, do you think that they wouldn't have been in huge demand? Or do you think Mooney and Scarlett were struggling to find a coaching job? Or are you that far down the rabbit hole with disliking our coach that you can't conceed that his being mates with these guys allowed us to bring on board two highly valued leaders and mentors?

They may not work out but they certainly have the pedigree.

Unusually, I completely disagree with you this time Dogwatch.

The Mooney and Scarlett appointments are a very low risk for the club and have significantly more upside than downside. I don't think that there is anything wrong with some of the younger supporters getting excited about something they see as a positive. The last thing they need is some grumpy old prick coming on here ridiculing them. It has been a long season full of disappointments. We should celebrate any minor victories when we can.

Does anyone know if Barry Hall and Chris Grant are doing anything with the kids in a development role? We have 2 of the best modern day forwards in the game already at the club and I would hope we are able to use these guys as assets for the development of the kids and the club.
Hall in particular should be used in a similar role as Mooney will be.
Not unhappy with the 2 guys brought in, they can only help you would think.

Seeing you missed it my point instead you decided to attack the poster,it's about the thread was getting a little carried away with 2 part time appointments.

Just because I'm not part of the love fest that everything is great at the club and everything the club does is awesome I suppose that makes me always negative in your eyes.
