Dean Matthews

I really thought he was going to be a good player. Lit it up in that pre-season. Very, very quick. Evidently is a legend of the VAFA (played in rep teams despite not playing in the top grades?). Not sure what went wrong with his time at St Kilda.

I remember loving the look of him that pre season. Had a bit of Aussie Jones about him. light but super quick.

Peter Russo used to be coach of Old Mentonians back about 5-8 years ago.

Anyone know what Cayden Beetham is doing these days? Still cant believe he busted his ass for 3 years, finally secured a spot in the starting 22, then decided his heart wasn't in it...

You sure about busting his arse? Don't remember him as an elite trainer. More like wasted elite talent.

Think he was in Qld, but moved to Sorrento with the Schwarze's. Looks like James Hallahan (assume it's the former Zeb at the same club) is flying - been in the best players almost every game.

Maybe not busted his ass, but certainly looked to have 'worked out' what hard training was all about, secured his spot then gave it up. I was gutted when he walked away. You are correct - wasted elite talent

WillyJ is at Box Hill.

Raph is playing with St Albans too.

Brad Howard is at Redlands, and has been joined by Gaertner.

BTW - Archer has done his third significant injury (quad).

Hehe I couldn't remember which team Raph was playing for but I remembered reading an article about playing in Colac , and upon reading the OP thought.... "I don't think so "
He's doing some other good work as well

Not sure who this random person is. But perhaps he knows if there are any former Saints grand finals players at Woodviel West Torrens.

St Albans coach Clinton Proctor "Raph is really good, I just wish we could spend more time with him down here. He's a really smart player and sets us up from behind the play and gives us good shape, he was terrific again. Having Raph out there is like having a second coach on the field, he is basically our back-line coach, he is the general back there."

Mate - I explained this one in an old post of mine. I would repost it but for some reason I have never been able to search for my old posts.

In short - he was crook and it stuffed bis first year. Then his sister got Fredricks Ataxia (spelling) and he lost the passion.

Probably about time I used the search function for good (instead of evil).

Great stuff.
Cadyn Beatham was a gun but his sister (whom he is very close to) was diagnosed with a terrible disease the year he was drafted and it affecting him and his family greatly. Then he got really ill and lost about 10kgs. The club didn't have the resources to support blokes like that so he basically never got back on the horse. He was a gun junior and should have made it. Big, fast and with a booming kick. Bit of a lad but he was a mate of Rooeys and liked by the players. Rooey hooked Beetham up with the Southport Sharks for a few seasons but it didn't work out.

No longer playing, obviously, but Aussie Jones is the senior coach of the potentially-doomed Bendigo Gold in the VFL. Tried to get a word with him when he coached at North Port about a month ago, but never got around to it and had to leave strait after the game.

I'm not that worried. The Gold are basically in a GWS or Suns scenario - starting from nothing. When the Dons dumped them, they didn't have much to work with. But Aussie is a flipping good coach. Narre Warren is still doing well, thanks to the culture he created there when he was coach.

It would not surprise me at all if with 2-3 years, the Gold makes the rest of the comp quake with fear.

its not the playing stocks that is the problem, its sponsorships and crowd numbers.

aussie is doing good with the kids, you can see improvement in them, but when there is lucky to be a few hundred people at the games, the team is in trouble sadly

Sadly, it has been decided the Gold will hand back their license on September 27 unless they get a significant indication from the local community that they are wanted. If that leaves Aussie out of a job, maybe he can return home in some capacity, it would be nice to see him back in red, white and black.

That's a real shame. But yeah, it'd be awesome for him to come back to the Saints, especially in a development capacity.

Andrew Mcqualter... i never rated him as a footballer. anyone think different?

Simply the wrong size for his preferred style of play. Good short kick, good mark for his size, kicked some goals, tackled hard. Seemed to continually win the contested ball and rack up disposals at VFL, couldn't translate it to top level. Understandable, given he was 5'9 and 80 kg wet.

Was still valuable part of the 09/10 sides, especially in the drawn GF.
