Well if it's between the Swans and GWS, with both offering big money, why the **** would he pick GWS.

$600k more p.a. if the rumours are to be believed.

It's a no brainer to be honest.

As raman says, its a LOT of money. Would you give up an extra $12000 a week? Its not like he is chasing a premiership or anything.

$600k less 46.5% tax and medicare levy. Other considerations include Cameron vs Longmire, living in or near Western Sydney vs near the SCG, premiership windows, club culture, third party deals (time & money).
Sydney for mine.

Buddy is destined for NSW. Where he winds up, I don't care, but I imagine if he becomes a Swan, COLA is going to come under even more intense scrutiny. Both GWS and Sydney have ludicrous concessions that have been or will be the sole reasons for their success on the national stage. The AFL went on a fact-finding mission to the USA about equalisation. I'm hoping they've realised that what they're doing in Sydney and Western Sydney is just farcical.

Also: bets for how long it takes Eddie to make comments about this in the media. I'm tipping 12 hours.

Dobie I reckon the only reason Buddy is leaving the Hawks is for the money. Otherwise couldn't your same points could be used for staying at Hawthorn (1.1m v 1.4m) over the Swans? although I am not sure of the Hawks contract length.

Haven't got a source but I'm positive I read some time back about special tax arrangements for AFL players, due to the relatively short window of their peak earning, that allows them to average out their earnings (and therefore lower their tax rate) over a significantly longer period of time.

EDIT: I will now pretend to try and track down details while really just waiting for RussellEbertHandball to arrive with the facts ;)

Money would not be the only reason, often a change is as good as a holiday. In Sydney, with whatever team, Buddy can go about his day to day affairs with reasonable anonymity which has to be a bonus for a footballer.
Who knows, he may end up staying at the Hawks, Clarko was unsure last night On The Couch?

Feel free to read at your leisure
Income averaging for sportspersons

For Buddy it would be average taxable professional income (ATPI) in an income year is one-quarter of the sum of his TPI for each of the preceding four years.

It's been mentioned on the main board, that the actual difference in SYD and GWS is $100k.
$1.4M + $500k ($1.9M) from SYD compared to $1.5M + $500k ($2M) from GWS.
The extra $500k coming from the AFL ambassadors role, which he would probably get joining either club.
If that's the case, he will be a swan for sure !

When I was already on 7 million for 5 years and I get to play with much better players, better coaching staff, better culture, better facilities(maybe), get to live in the heart of Sydney without having much traveling time for training and the very real possibility of winning a few more premierships...

As I said, it's a no brainer.

Yeah there was a story, I think from the AFLPA wanting some sort of tax relief, but no legislation has been passed giving them special consideration.

The averaging of sportsman's income has been around for over a decade and was brought in to help Olympians who might make a few hundred thousand dollars the year after they win gold and then not much. It wouldn't realy affect a footballer who is on the top bracket ie over $180k ever year for the 4 years of averaging.

That's the Frank Costa argument. But an extra $600k lets you go out and borrow an extra $2.5mil and if you negatively gear the purchase of an asset then you reduce your tax on that $600k substantially whilst making a 50% tax free capital gain if you make a smart investment.

It's a bit rich for AFL players wanting special tax concessions over and above what is available to other professional sportspersons. Can't see it happening.

Or 100% tax free if you use small business CGT concessions, or use a self managed super fund correctly. Lots of footballers go into business and if they play it right they can do quite well.
