I hope all this hype about bontempelli doesn't get st Kilda or GWS into him..!!
I doubt a national recruiting manager for a professional AFL club is getting their draftee advice from a bunch of anonymous alias' on an internet forum

Yeah, reading Footy Tragic's write up of Scharenberg makes me want him even more than I already do. I've resigned myself to the fact that we're getting Bontempelli, and I don't mind it. I really like him, just a couple of guys like Scharenberg and Kolodjashnij who I'd prefer. As long as Scharenberg doesn't go to Collingwood, I'll be ok.

Were you reading my mind??

That's what you would hope..

I don't see initial speed as critical across half forward, most of the time they are pushing up to the wings/half back and are running back hard. It would certainly be better if he had that initial burst, but I don't think it's a big issue when played further up the ground.
So you're pegging him as a high forward not a KPP - an area we have an abundance of players in.

The team that picks Bont is picking him for midfield potential - if we want a utility, the Berg seems a mile ahead of him, similar height, excellent disposal.

While we're in the middle of half conforming, half rebelling over the possibility of picking Bont, take a minute to be glad we're not Carlton. Their recruiter just resigned a day out from the draft.

Edit: nevermind, Herald Sun headline is misleading as always. Has been gone for two weeks.

Wow.. Wonder why. Just when he was about to pick someone after all his hard work.

Article is today, but it says he walked out 2 weeks ago.
Still, that's a pretty crazy thing to happen. Their first pick is in a really tough spot too. Sucks for them.

Ninja edit. ;)

Bloody HS and their misleading headlines. Who knew that "draft eve" means two weeks before?

I thought we were lacking in a high half forward a bit this year, but that role is probably filled by Crameri now. Anyway I see him as a mid, an inside receiver type that can push or rest up forward in periods so we are really arguing about nothing lol.

His inside game is part of his midfield game that needs work (which of course has nothing to do with the original discussion about his potential as a KPP, nor as a high forward, nor as a midfielder resting forward)

Bontempelli will be a great pick at 4,, as I I have been saying on here for weeks, the negativity of some of the posts on here are amazing. I hope the sun comes up tomorrow morning for some of these poor bastards.
Our recruiting at the club since Macca's arrival has been terrific, his idea of a points system a player must reach to be drafted by the club is outstanding, a panel of 4, who have put hours into this will come up with pick 4, sure have your choice, but stop the knocking and the negative crap. I would hate to be Bontempelli reading some of this.

I agree with you. Especially considering not many people have any idea of the juniors. That includes me.

But if Bontempelli can't stand reading some of the discussion here(but still reads it) then I suggest we pass on him or any player that fragile.

If Bonts has grown that much in the last year [ now variously 193-4], at his age in all likelihood the kid is still growing [ I was 21+ before I stopped].
If he grows another 3cm over the next year or two it takes him to 195-6.

There would end the fairy tale of a tall midfielder.

So we use P4 on what might amount to a potential KPP who probably has never played that role as a junior ???

Look I am not totally anti having Bonts. on our list, but given the quality of other players likely to still be available at P4, I just find it
very hard to see the sense in taking him there. If our pick was between 7 and say 15, I would have little hesitation, but picking kids at
17-18 is fraught with more than enough risks. So sorry, I just can't see the logic in taking extra risks when you don't need to.

Or perhaps he could be a new breed of midfielder at 196cm? You ask people from the 80's if someone that's 191cm can be a midfielder and they would just laugh at you. The game is ever-changing, and players can't be pigeonholed into positions just because of their height (unless you're 210cm ) We've got a prime example of this on the list already, Jarrad Grant. Because of his height people have expected him to play as a KPF, when that isn't his true position, he should be playing like a small forward and lead up target.

Why? Richo was 197cm and nearly won a Brownlow playing off a wing. Bontempelli is a midfielder, regardless of height.

It's been said that he he really good below his knees. Plus with all the clearances he averaged late in the season, there shouldn't be any concern with his height

There is no so much negativitiy from me but nervousness. The kid is roundly rated top ten so can play and should be good for us - No doubts there.

My nervousness though come from the fact that not for the first time we are going someone the general followers of junior footy are surprised we are taking as high as we are. Williams, Howard, Stringer and even Macrae were surprised selections in alot of respects with our first pics in those drafts.
Last year macrae was suggested to fall to pick 9 or 10 until 2 days before the draft - and Stringer wasn't even invited by the afl as a suggested top 15 pick. yet we took them at 5 and 6 or whatever it was.

They may well all turn out to be great players and early signs are good but sometimes id just be happy playing safe with a guy we know will be a good player i.e. Aish over someone who has doubts over him and has only produced for 6 games of a season as a midfielder.
Yes I know its a risk vs reward thing but not sure at pick 4 there should be any need to take a risk.

For me getting a one paced left footed midfielder is what we got last year in getting macrae. Bontempelli offers more height which is one minor difference but both very similar IMO. When Aish is sitting there as a quicker outside mid who smashed kicking efficiency records in the carnival for his ball use I just cant see why we are overlooking him.

Thats just my opinion anyway - and Bontempelli not doubt will become a decent player.
The whole question will be whether he was a better fit for us than Aish when we look at the decision long term.
thats the question our supporters will need to ask long term.

Sooo Bontempelli is currently in the Gold Coast at least we know for a fact that he is going top 10..

Even timtam is making arguements for the Bonce now! :p

I wonder if Billings is avail if you blokes will choose him ahead of Bontempelli? From a Saints POV it seems to be Billings by a nose on Sharenberg with a final decision to be made in a meeting this afternoon.

Lord I hope so, if Billings was a midfielder he would probably be taken at pick 2, and I think he can eventually develop to become a midfielderor at least spend a lot more time there.

It's a tough one. You'd think we would on talent, but apparently he didn't interview well with us at all, and Bontempelli interviewed really well. So it's tough to say. It'll be interesting which way you guys go. If I were a Saints supporter, I'd be hoping for Billings.
