His inside game is part of his midfield game that needs work (which of course has nothing to do with the original discussion about his potential as a KPP, nor as a high forward, nor as a midfielder resting forward)

I'm under no illusions that he does. But I do like his natural inside ability in that he reads the ball well of the ruckman's hands, has clean hands, is composed under pressure and he as the ability to keep his arms free whilst tackled to get a handball away. He's really only started to play as an inside midfielder this year so he has a lot of development left. Once he positions himself better, has more understanding of when to go and gets a bit more size about him it's an area of his game that should continue to improve a fair bit.

Lord I hope so, if Billings was a midfielder he would probably be taken at pick 2, and I think he can eventually develop to become a midfielderor at least spend a lot more time there.

I really like the look of Billings, I think he could become the best player in the draft. Saying that, I believe there is an element of risk whether he becomes the player I would love him to become, as a genuine midfielder. Sharenberg on the other hand looks to me to be a sure thing. Not too many weaknesses. He's a genuine all-rounder that seems to play at a very high level in multiple positions on the ground. He's the safe bet and seeing where St Kilda's list is at we really need a sure thing and cannot role the dice with pick 3. I'd be happy with either and I'll trust our recruiters to make the right decision and coaches to develop the kid we choose.

It's a tough one. You'd think we would on talent, but apparently he didn't interview well with us at all, and Bontempelli interviewed really well. So it's tough to say. It'll be interesting which way you guys go. If I were a Saints supporter, I'd be hoping for Billings.

From what I've seen of Billings when interviewed he seems like a playful sort of guy and enjoys having a bit of fun. And that's not a bad thing. Don't underestimate Bontempelli having the luxury of speaking to his cousin Nick and getting some tips in regards to the right things to say and do when being interviewed by clubs. I suspect he would have said all the things clubs were looking for, hence why he interviewed well. As we know, the interview is not everything. Look at Scott Watters. Apparently he interviewed phenomenally and then we later find out he's a control freak and borderline sociopath (if the rumours about him are true).

If Bonts has grown that much in the last year [ now variously 193-4], at his age in all likelihood the kid is still growing [ I was 21+ before I stopped].
If he grows another 3cm over the next year or two it takes him to 195-6.

There would end the fairy tale of a tall midfielder.

So we use P4 on what might amount to a potential KPP who probably has never played that role as a junior ???

Look I am not totally anti having Bonts. on our list, but given the quality of other players likely to still be available at P4, I just find it
very hard to see the sense in taking him there. If our pick was between 7 and say 15, I would have little hesitation, but picking kids at
17-18 is fraught with more than enough risks. So sorry, I just can't see the logic in taking extra risks when you don't need to.

If he grows a few more cm's does it really matter? There's maybe a slight worry once he puts on a bit more size he may lose a bit of athleticism, but I don't think it's a major worry. He doesn't need to pile on the weight like Cordy did.

Bontempelli will be a great pick at 4,, as I I have been saying on here for weeks, the negativity of some of the posts on here are amazing. I hope the sun comes up tomorrow morning for some of these poor bastards.
Our recruiting at the club since Macca's arrival has been terrific, his idea of a points system a player must reach to be drafted by the club is outstanding, a panel of 4, who have put hours into this will come up with pick 4, sure have your choice, but stop the knocking and the negative crap. I would hate to be Bontempelli reading some of this.

Agree and I've heard Macca (privately) say an a small event last year that one of the other simple quantifiers that he takes into account is his "take home to your parents" Points Factor. The Macca theory is.... "would I be content if this kid took out my daughter and he became part of my family?" and if the answer is a big YES than you've ticked one of his boxes*.

Note: In some Northern cirlces this can also be known as the "no dickheads" policy.

*please, no double entendre replys*

He'll fit right in at the saints then! hopefully the fun he has keeps out of the papers!

Also i think people have the wrong idea of what these interviews are. They aren't a typical job interview where you rock up for an hour and answer some questions. The clubs get to know they players, their families and friends to really identify what the players character is like and also what those around them are like. They look at the player for maybe 1 or 2 years. Just answering the questions correctly wont get you drafted ahead of another. I think if the Saints recruited Watters on the back of him answering questions well is poor recruiting. This is the head coach of a footy club we're talking about here

And then, he'll be ticking...

Macca's daughter's boxes.

.... Sorry.

There are a number of media reports that one Unidentified recruiter rates bontempelli the best talent in this draft

Does anyone know if this is dalrymple or someone else?

I would suggest it is Dalrymple.

He rated Christian Howard a first rounder when no other club knew who the hell he was.

Bontempelli spoke very well on MMM this morning, seems like a good kid.

Hopefully he keeps growing and ends up about 196cm. That would be up there with Goodes/Koutta in terms of height for midfielders, not that it makes him good.

He is already taller (192cm) than both of those players...

Goodes/Kouta are ~191cm.

196cm takes him well into KPP player land - I can't recall ever seeing a 6'6" midfielder.

He could end up having a career like Fraser Gehrig who started as a big winger-flanker with WC and then filled out to become a big key forward.

Did he say anything interesting ?

What do you guys think are the chances of you picking bont?

About 95% certain we will. Don't think he'll get past us unless St Kilda pass on Billings, and even then it's unlikely we don't take Bont imo.

Lucky bastards. :p

Still think I'd be taking Sheed if I were Brisbane - but Aish and Scharenberg will both be good choices.

We have 5 second round picks, so we can target specific needs (inside mid) during the second round. With pick 7 I reckon we will go for the best player available, which will probably be Aish/Berg, and Sheed would be our backup if those 2 don't slip
