Observations:
Essendon: Tragic loss to arch rivals Hawthorn on Friday Night, unable to close out a 2 goal lead in the last 3 minutes of the game, where they failed to put extra men back which ultimately probably would have won the game. Chapman, Watson and Goddard were among the best for the Bombers.

Carlton: Played one good quarter of football against the Tigers, but were comical for the rest. The skills, defense, everything was horrible. They looked like a bush league side. If they had kicked straight they may have gotten up, and players like McLean, Murphy, Gibbs and Thomas were nowhere to be seen in the last.

Head to head (last 5): Essendon 3-2 Carlton

Carlton defence vs Essendon forward line
This looks to be pretty even, with Carlton having average tall defenders apart from Jamison, but three excellent small defenders in Walker, Simpson and Tuohy, all of whom know how to shut down a man and rebound from defensive 50 well. Essendon's talls look a bit light on, but Daniher, Carlisle and Ambrose are looking promising right now as a trio, and the small players of Merrett, Chapman and Goddard are providing good avenues to goal.

Midfield battle (rucks included)

Essendon should really get on top here, with the class of Watson, Stanton, Goddard, Chapman, Zaharakis, Heppell, Myers, the list goes on and on about the class of the player in this midfield. Carlton look very weak in this area however, with Murphy and Gibbs the standouts but the rest just look to have a gap in quality to their Essendon counterpart, with the exception of the ruck, where most people would expect Warnock to have an advantage over the first gamer in Thurlow. The tags will be interesting, with Murphy likely to get the close attention of Heath Hocking, and Curnow likely to be shutting down Stanton, which means players like Watson, Goddard, Zaharakis will run free.

Carlton forward line vs Essendon defence

Another place where you'd put the advantage to Essendon. The much fabled small forwards of Carlton have been average so far this season, other than a small burst from Yarran which could have been easily curtailed. Essendon's KPD's in Fletcher, Hooker and Hurley have started well this season, and their small defenders have been in good form as well. The key battle here is Hurley vs Waite and Hooker vs Henderson. If Essendon can break even in those they should be able to handle the rest of the Carlton forward line

X-Factor players

Martin Gleeson has been the find of the year for the Dons, just has so much time in traffic and has a silkiness about him that he can weave through 3 or 4 players and deliver the ball with precision. He looks like a dead-set gem and once he gets his tank up and adds more bulk, look out.

Kane Lucas is one of the more frustrating players for Carlton, a high draft pick but can't seem to be at ease at senior level, and he needs to perform this year unless he wants to find himself on the scrapheap at Carlton at the end of the year

Key area for each side:

Essendon:
  • Movement. Essendon's forwards get a bit stagnant at times during the game, and as such it's predictable to what they're going to do
Carlton:
  • Turnovers. Carlton don't have fantastically skilled players like Hawthorn do, and Essendon kill teams on the turnover.

My tip

Given the formlines, Essendon should be able to win this quite comfortbly, looking at the average Carlton displays against Port and Richmond, and Essendon's excellent showing against Hawthorn, Essendon by 42 points

This statement could be very stupid (which is pretty standard for me), but I'll say it anyway:

What if we bring in Pears, Hooker plays ruck and we try to beat Warnock around the ground. Carlton's KPF's suck so it's not like we really need him back there and it could be an experiment to see if we can pull this off in the future.

Actually, ignore that. It's stupid

I don't care how we go about it but nothing less than a destroy-ation of the filth will be acceptable.

Re: the rucks, did I hear Bomber say in the presser that T-Bell could be a chance to play next week?

I don't think he can, he has 2 more weeks on the LTI iirc

Bit worried about the rucks here. We have them covered all over the ground apart from the ruck division though so should be OK.
Have a look at that half forward line;-

Goddard Carlisle Chapman

wow!!!

It's ok, I'm happy for Warnock to get a heap of the footy.

This won't be an easy game despite what many think. We need to come as prepared as any other game, mick will be ready for us and Carlton will be pumped to get their first win on the board.

Need to be firing on all cylinders to win this one!

It won't be easy, but we're a significantly better team. Play well and we win.

Last five head to head should read 3 Essendon- 2 Carlton, eth-dog.

Is Ryder definitely out?
woops, my bad. I think he is
I can't pick the third out (Ryder and Z Merrett obvious) to get Winderlich, Melksham and Thurlow in. Maybe save Licha for Perth.
I went Hardingham, but purely because Licha is an upgrade on him

Agree - we look better on paper but our forward line and ruck is a worry and they have players who can make us pay if we are not on our game.

Can't wait to see Dempsey and Melksham back. Wonder if there is a chance that Pears will come in and Hurley go forward and Daniher ruck? Bomber would probably be loathe to shift Hurley.

If Pears comes in I'd rather we play Hooker as the ruck tbh

Barring no disasters in the VFL game today I would expect all of Melksham, Winderlich and Dempsey to return next week.

Ryder was always going to get injured eventually as soon as Bellchambers went down. So predictable especially when it's somebody we can least afford to lose.

This is going to be a very tricky game. We knocked them off twice last year (both in fairly exceptional circumstances) and they will want nothing more than to open their win account against us. Things could go two ways after last night... A) we will be filthy about the Hawks loss and come out with a bang or B) we will be flat as a tack and allow Carlton to grab the initiative.

As usual I'm not seeing this game as the 'lock' many are expecting. Nothing is ever that easy against Carlton. In fact we sound exactly like they have before playing us in recent seasons only for them to wind up with egg on face.

Really need to win this. If we don't we will probably be 1_3 after four rounds and can kiss our top 4 chances goodbye. I'm nervous already.
Nah, I see us being 3-1 after 4

I am happy for Pears to come in and play forward so that JD and Carlisle can share the rucking duty.
Winderlich should be back but Dempsey is a way off yet.

This is a game that Essendon "should" win but Essendon and Carlton games rarely go that way with Knights winning all but one game against the higher rated Carlton side .... after they beat us a few times in their real horror years.

I'm feeling pretty confident about this one. I think our midfield is just better. Thurlow will be competitive in the ruck taps itself just won't do much around the ground - that's really about all we need to be honest.
We should get Winderlich back which means our forward line will look a lot better, just gives us more options and more leadership down there as well. Plus he will actually lead up at the ball carrier which would be nice.

Our defense is rock solid and should be far too good for Carlton forwards. Hell even Hawks who have an amazing forward line only scored 90 against us whereas Carlton's forward line is pretty flaky even on its best days.

Also just generally Carlton aren't that good, they apply defensive pressure sporadically, they turn the ball over regularly and all their contested ball winners have poor disposal whilst their more skillful/quicker types tend to be pretty soft.

Essendon by 48

I don't think it'll be close. They're a genuinely rubbish team and we're genuinely top four material. Both teams will be highly motivated but I'm not sure there's any team that tries as hard as Essendon, and few teams play with as little heart as Carlton (probably just Melbourne).
