Saw Jarrod Garlett yesterday and whilst I acknowledge it was just one game, I wasn't particularly impressed.

Looked small, outside and his disposal and decision making was mediocre. Perhaps he was just having a poor game.

EDIT: I wasn't watching Souths too closely, I just picked up on Garlett early and followed him. Wish I picked up on Pickett to check him out too.

WAFL debut so I wouldn't read too much into it. The fact he is even playing seniors is encouraging. I think Souths have a number of sleeper prospects this year. They have been playing well of late.

Retire:
Cox
Glass

Delist:
Brennan
A.Smith
Wilson
McInness

Touch and Go:
McGinnity (has poor skills so I'm not sure how Simpson will view retaining him)
Tunbridge (needs game time until the end of the year to show his worth)
Waters (can't get on the park - will be 29 next year, AA potential when fit)

Thoughts?

McGinnity (has poor skills so I'm not sure how Simpson will view retaining him)
What they do with Paddy will be interesting. Can never been questioned in terms of effort and pressure but by gee he is a liability when he's got the footy. Think we're better off without any player we say that about.

Yeah exactly. He butchers the ball by foot. I wouldnt say McGinnity's decision making is that great either. Both of those negatives to his game make me think that his time is up. Just like Dalziell, he's an honest player but thats all he'll ever be. He's been passed by Hutchings this season and when the squad isnt so screwed by injuries McGinnity wouldnt get a game.

Wasn't there talk of him signing on for another contract recently?

Good lord, was there? As long as it is for absolute peanuts and he understands he's nothing more than a depth player I guess he can stay on.

The West Australian understands McGinnity's hardness around the contest in recent weeks has impressed West Coast's coaching hierarchy at a time when Adam Simpson is carrying out a thorough assessment of his list.

FWIW I wouldn't offer him one, nor Hill, Brennan, or Wilson.

Probably chuck Smith in that list too, although I really wanted him to make it.

From the look of the last 3 weeks, it really seems that it is starting to click though. This run and carry game plan is beautiful to watch, and I think there is just a big emphasis on getting the ball from the back line through players like Hurn and Butler (who is usually a neat kick) to the better kicks in the middle like Shuey and Gaff.

When that happens we usually score. The problem is when the ball gets to McGinnity or Priddis or Hutchings in the middle, and the whole thing breaks down (see Matt Priddis' inside 50 yesterday)

we have come a long way since last season, I reckon

i think thats a big harsh on hutchings. his kicking has improved. i am not saying its brilliant, but its better than other two.

one thing i don't get was a passage of play last night, gaff had the ball running @ 50. could have taken a kick but mcginnity called for it and of course missed. mcginnity, stick to tackling. gaff had 1000% chance of doing something with the ball.

I wouldn't say he's a liability. He's a poor disposer but I think for the most part he tries to dispose within his ability constraints.

Ultimately it's his other facets that provide value but he's nothing more than depth. He probably has enough impact to warrant a spot over other dead wood.

I'd have him as a 50/50 to be delisted depending on others, retirements and draft prospects.

Yeah, I reckon Hutching's first half was excellent. Gathered the ball a fair few times and was pretty clean with his disposal, including a nice I50 and assist. IIRC, He kept Heppell to 6 disposals halfway through the 2nd, which really highlights how his move down back (that probably forced Hutchings off him for a while) played an important role in the turning point of the game. I think he can make it, remember how young he still is, with such little AFL experience.

Btw, absolutely devasated after that loss. F***ing killed me.

I don't like this attitude. McGinnity should be providing an option, he was doing the right thing. The fact Gaff made a poor decision isn't McGinnity's fault.

Yeah that was somewhat painful. If only he was reliable with the ball, could be such a weapon.

I have the following five as gone:

Glass, Cox, Brennan, Wilson, Smith

I think we will turn over 6 or 7. Meaning we need 1 or 2 more.

Next in line IMO are:

Carter, McGinnity, Hill, McInnes

Edit: forgot about Waters. He's some chance to go if he doesn't pass medical tests.

Yes, i commented on that in the game thread ... Gaff should have continued on into goal and told Ginners to protect him. It was farked as soon as he gave it to Ginners.

yeah but sometimes you just react to a call. mcginnity should have moved in to cover gaff. anyway.

Should just be second nature for any footballer, really.

You guys are nuts. McGinnity did nothing wrong in this instance (other than the poor finish). He was breaking into space and running the angle before Gaff had even received the ball.

I've no problems with criticisms when players deserve as such, but this is just illogical.

I'm not saying he should have done anything, nor am I criticizing anyone. I have no opinion on the matter, it could have gone either way. I was simply adding on to a part of Avalor's post.

Me too. Looks like many kids with all the tools but is missing the mental attributes required to succeed at higher level sport. Maybe he had it too easy as a kid. But, it is time to move him on.

In one of my weird thought moment - I see a place for Smith at Sydney. Now stop laughing and hear me out.

He will come cheap, picks and $. With COLA gone/going and their recent signings Sydney may be looking for a cheaper option.
It appears as if Malceski may be off, Shaw is retiring and LRT has announced retirement - Sydney will be looking for defenders.
Sydney have the 'culture' to turn players around - they may think they can do the same for Smith.

Maybe a Smith for Lockyer?
