Mad Monday...

There are certain things that a reasonable person can reasonably predict could be offensive to a large cross-section of the public. Dressing up as a convicted paedophile and one of his victims falls into this category.

And who introduced the photo to a large cross section of the public

The Media

Thats who your outrage should be aimed at

Melbourne is investigating whether two of its players at Mad Monday celebrations have dressed up as Rolf Harris and a young girl.

A photo of the pair, posted on defender Dean Terlich's Instagram account features Terlich and teammate Alex Georgiou dressed up in costumes that appear to be the disgraced musician and a girl. Terlich is wearing a fake goatee, high grey wig, short tie, colourful shirt, blazer and rectangular glasses, all of which are trademarks of Harris.

Great start to the offseason, Demons.

Hahaha, that'll be hard to top!

if it was my daughter i wouldnt find it funny and i would be offended. are we seriously supposed to not dress up to not offend 1 or 2 people? so you cant dress up as a nazi? you cant dress up as a preist? you cant dress up as a murderer? you cant dress up as a black person? (apparently)

It shouldnt matter if it is fictional or not. isnt the argument of those who are offended that it isnt the costume but its the subject matter. so a fictional or real character shouldnt matter.
If they dressed up as a Nazi and a jew there would of have been an outrage. If they dressed up as a priest and a child there would of been an outrage. If you dressed up as a known murderer with his victim there would of been outrage ect. I'm not sure what your point is there.
I agree with you that we have the right to offend, but to an extent. Are you saying as long as people aren't physically harming people they can offend them as much as they want? If you think there is a limit to what is acceptable why isn't trivialising the issue of children being abuse overstepping the mark?

It's news. That's usually where news goes, when it's fed to media outlets on a silver platter.

Its not news, its blokes wearing a costume to mad monday

Its only news because they know people like you will over react and make a big deal out of it

You know whats news? All the innocent people dying in Iraq right now, or all the people starving in Africa

Not 2 footballers wearing a ****ing costume

How many hits has it had?

How many pages is it going to get in this thread?

Yeah, it's news.

Nice deflection. I guess 36 blokes kicking a bit of leather around a paddock isn't news then, either and shame on anyone who thinks it is.

I think there's a difference in using blackface to ridicule or humiliate blacks and dressing up as someone who happens to be black.

Like, LeBron James is black, right, we all accept that? Is that racist?

If a person who happens to be white dresses up as black person but leaves their skin white its going to look pretty stupid, in this case I dont see it as any different to dressing up as say, a bald person and wearing a swimming cap.

It's simply making yourself look like the person you're trying to impersonate. IF you try and draw racial hate from this particular situation you're just looking for an excuse to get offended.

The Rolf Harris dress up is a bit off but ffs just don't mention it all over social media and no one would know or give a ****....

100%. This is pretty much exactly what players are taught about in their education sessions - don't put it on social media FFS.

It's a pretty poor taste costume, 'light-hearted satire' take on a paedophilia case (which it is - don't even try to argue this point Demons supporters) and putting it up on your social media account is just dumb. It's not necessarily something for everyone to get their undies twisted over, but it's just so dumb.

Terlich and Georgiou will need to attend 2x the 'education' sessions next year to get it through their thick skulls - you're in the public eye, you can have fun but FFS don't put it on social media if it could be in bad taste.

That teacup you are storming in might break soon.

Who gives a Shyte!!!

Bad taste yes. Newsworthy...... not even remotely.

Like most people, I'm 'storming' about the absolute stupidity these players have shown in shooting themselves in their respective feet. I'm not offended, but I can understand why a lot of people would be. Probably including some people whose financial contributions are vital to the Melbourne Football Club.

on THEIR instagram, which no one is forced to look at

Nope, dumb comment. If it's THEIR instagram, they should be able to post whatever racist thought comes to mind, right? They should be able to post how rape is funny right, considering it's THEIR instagram.

Hmm, no. There's a reason AFL clubs have embraced social media the way they have, it's fast, effective and seen by thousands if it's talk-worthy. Which this is.

Not until the media decides to make it a front page story
If its such a sensitive photo why is it on the front page of every media outlet, if its so offensive why are they showing it all over the newspapers

Fact is no one here would have seen it if the media hadn't picked it up

The rape thing is that they didnt go out and find people to offend, people found what they were doing and chose to get offended[/QUOTE]

How is this any different to the dozens of cases we've seen in AFL and other sports every year? Just because it's Melbourne doesn't mean you need to deflect away from them. The crux of this (imo - the dressing up as a paedophile is poor taste but not really indicative of wider issues like say an assault is), is that AFL players still have not learned how to use social media - don't turn this into 'big bad media' on a witchhunt thing. Terlich should know better, heavens knows the players get told this shit enough.

Your not taking into account the historical significance of blackface.

They are footballers. If they were Rhodes Scholars, then I'd expect more. But given they are footballers, I'm amazed they even found the function.

If we have a nation too intent on showing indignation for things that were meant for the trivial amusement of very few, then we become a very fragile society. Put this 'incident' into context of a woman found with her feet bound in a lane way in Prahran, alleging gang rape...... yeah, I know what I find infinitely more disgusting and worthy of news space.

Nothing to do with melbourne , I dont like them at all

So wearing a costume means you are Pro racism and rape?

I cant discuss this with people who see one thing and then view it as 10 different things

I don't need to put it in that context. It's not a question of 'either'/'or' with those two stories. This is a footy forum and people are here to talk about footy issues. Sorry.

I don't need sports commentators to tell me about some tragedy that's just occurred and patronisingly tell me that it puts things into perspective.
