It's logical that your defensive regarding those topics and you must be sick to death of hearing about it. However you must acknowledge these are only issues because of your clubs doing and nobody else AND they are relevant in this trade due to the new clause in all AFL player contracts.You say that Essendon supporters are delusional. But at least we can have a conversation about the actual topic. I can't even discuss this without people bring up "ohhhh drugzz'' 'Hird the human needle"
I don't recall a player ever having a case against the club he is trying to leave at an AFL grievance hearing. The neutral observer says he has an excellent case against Essendon. Essendon will consider if this were to occur what the possible outcomes would be. They are;
1) Essendon may lose Ryder for nix.
2) More importantly is that it possibly sets a precedent for any other Essendon player looking to leave next year or in the near future. In addition to this it opens the gate to possible Civil litigation. Civil litigation may never occur but once a player is scorned or feels like they have been genuinely disadvantaged in some way then it's a very real threat for the Bombers. If an AFL Grievance Tribunal rules in favour of the player it's a pretty good indication what will happen in a Civil Court where the burden of proof is on the balance of probabilities and NOT beyond a reasonable doubt (as in Criminal cases).
This does effect a clubs bargaining position whether you or I like it or not. Pick 17 is slightly unders for Ryder in a trade where the above factors are not an issue but they are and hence pick 17 is about right. Plus, I haven't even considered how possible player bans effect the deal.
I think Essendon will do a deal involving pick 17, perhaps with a sweetener. Essendon has always been my second team and they will remain that way. I don't take their stand with Ryder as an attack at Port Adelaide, I put it down to being fed up with their predicament, them thinking clubs are looking to take advantage of this and a large case of Dodoro 'testa dura'.
